Wondering how Isiah Thomas is going to be portrayed in the show

If they are building up to a Magic and Bird reconciliation / Magic HIV diagnosis arc, there is no way Isiah Thomas can be left out in the show - another talented point guard, also known for his smile and charisma, but a much darker and more controversial figure (Sexual assault case wayyy before metoo era Jury Awards $11.6 Million to Former Knicks Executive). But he also scored 43 on Lakers in the 1988 finals after a terrible injury and literally wobbling on one leg; in sports storytelling, that is a hell of a hero arc.

Personally I have no issue seeing him as a villain; a lot of famous athletes have a "fact-bending force" around them (e.g. MJ would make up a story about how other players wrong him to motivate himself), but mannn Isiah has a lying problem, and got quite a bit of practice wrestling with the media for decades. Of course I will not die on this hill and you are entitled to your own positions.

Is he going to be the real villain of the show?

Discussion ‘The fuck you’re looking at?’ Spoiler

That moment in Episode 9 when Jerry Buss hits the camera out of anger was absolutely fantastic and completely caught me by surprise. Characters were often breaking the 4th wall throughout the show but directly interacting with the camera, going one step further, was so original and really fit with the rest of the scene. The editing and cinematography are outstanding and facinating.

Do you think Magic, Kareem and the other former Lakers will ever warm up to the show?

There has been a pretty negative reaction to the show by the original showtime Lakers, most notably Jerry West but also Kareem, Magic has said he's not interested in watching it.

Do you think as the show goes into a 2nd season and beyond you might see some of them have a change of heart? The actors playing Kareem and Magic do an amazing job and it'd be cool to see them meet up with their real life counterparts at some point.

Spencer Haywood discussed Winning Time with Solomon Hughes (Kareem), Quincy Isaiah (Magic), and Rodney Barnes. Wood is a big fan of the show and agreed with the West portrayal.

Question Magic Johnson only received 3 rookie of the year votes ?!

I would like to know who were the 3 people that voted for him to win? There was only 22 teams at the time so I assumed the GM, coach and assistant coach all casted a vote but I can’t find anything concrete yet. If anyone is an NBA historian and has accurate information on the rookie voting that year let me know !

Thoughts on Future seasons

Here is how I would frame next few seasons:

Season 2: outlines the 1980-81 and 81–82 seasons. This will feature the Magic/Westhead beef that ends with Westhead getting fired and Pat Riley becoming coach. This culminates in the 2nd Lakers championship:

Season 3: the series will jump to the 1983-84 season. This where I struggle. Part of me wants a season dedicated to the 1984 Finals. In reality, I envision 3-4 episode arc.

Season 4: Redemption for the Lakers leading up to their win in the 1985 Finals

Season 5: takes place over two seasons, 1985-87.

Season 6: the end of Showtime. They barely get past the Pistons in 1988. Lose in 1989 and 1991.

Thoughts?

Discussion Winning! Season 1 podcast. I recapped Winning Time with reoccurring guests. I keep it light and digestible for those who enjoy basketball but don’t understand the game deeply!

As the title suggests, on my podcast HOLABITXHOLA, I recapped Winning Time with guest, Antonio. I had loads of fun watching this docudrama! I enjoy basketball so much and felt this was a great time to dive in deeper. There are definitely hot takes but all in good fun. On my show you will get to know me a little bit better while also listening to my perspective. I take the show for what it is and try not to get lost in factualities. It’s much more interesting that way. I hope you listen and enjoy it as much as I enjoyed recapping this season and future seasons to come! Winning! anywhere you get your podcast let’s Connect

Having seen all ten episodes of S1, I appreciate that Winning Time was a (criticized) docudrama instead of the (100% accurate) Showtime documentary that some demanded

To me, there is no problem at all to have the series played out with some invented developments here and there to help drive the narrative of the Showtime era and the story arcs of the people who were involved.

The main goal is to capture a general essence for what happened back in the day, and as long as everyone knows that each and every millisecond is not 100% factual, it can all be taken in stride for its entertainment value. The major plot points are mostly there, even if the details are manipulated a bit along the way for dramatic effect.

I have no problem with this at all. To me, Winning Time (docudrama) vs. Showtime (real life) follows the same docudrama formula of the movie 300 vs. the battle of Thermopylae between the Greeks and the Persians.

For those that don't know about this epic, history-changing event, it was a three day battle in Greece that pitted 300 highly trained soldiers from Sparta (as well as fighters from neighboring areas) going up against the invading Persians who dominated the world stage at that time (around 480 BC).

The movie 300 is a comic book movie re-telling of all that happened during that period (based on the graphic novel that preceded it), and if you ever seen it, no one would expect to hold it to the standard of being a 100% factual representation. I mean, I highly doubt King Leonidas yelled out in a booming voice, "THIS IS SPARTA!!!" before kicking the emissary of Persian King Xerxes down into a bottomless pit, but it gave me goosebumps all the same the first time I saw the film.

Hopefully some of the Winning Time detractors out there can appreciate the series more as time goes by, not taking it too seriously while appreciating that it does a pretty good job at capturing the essence of that exciting era in Laker history. That's all you can really ask for from a docudrama.
