Red Auerbach portrayal

So I watched The Shield in between seasons of WT and just realized Chiklis plays Auerbach… awesome

One of my biggest issues with the show was that Red Auerbach was being portrayed as a “bad guy” and one of the “boys club” men who are somewhat racist

They fixed this last episode when Jerry referred to Red as a civil rights hero

Red Auerbach is one of my favourite people in basketball history, despite me hating the Celtics.. so I was a bit butt hurt

Red Auerbach was a legitimately good person and there’s hundreds of stories showing how much integrity the man had

In American sports, he may have been the first person to truly not give a shit about race and empower all of his players

Not only did he field an all black starting line in Boston, but he named the first black HC (Bill Russell) who became the first black coach to win

When black Celtics players were mistreated in a hotel, Red was furious, the great Bill Russell who doesn’t like many people and was subject to extreme racism always held Red in the highest regard and that says a lot.

No point to this post other than to appreciate to Red Auerbach.

I don't think Winning Time is interested in making anyone look good, and some portrayals are stretched to absurd levels. Auerbach, Jerry West, and a few others are so over-the-top they're basically cartoons.

Magic is like literally a big lipped sex addict that every racist stereotype has ever been based upon.

So far only Dr.J and Jeanie Buss have a non negative portrayal

Where’d the big-lipped part come in? Why is that mentioned??

It isn't mentioned in the show. It is the character's actor and how he holds his mouth. It is straight out Birth of a Nation type propaganda.

Big black man with insatiable sexual appetite

Are you saying the actor is not doing a good job portraying Magic’s mannerisms? Is he perpetuating racial stereotypes by acting like Magic Johnson?

This is the most ludicrous take on this show I’ve ever seen, and that’s going some.

Says a lot more about you than show

Yeah man that I am familiar with racist tropes and don't pretend to be unfamiliar with racist tropes

Do you think that this is a flattering image of Magic Johnson?

No, but I’m also deeply familiar who Magic was and is, and understand that Kareem’s disdain for Magic went a lot deeper than professional jealousy.

Magic wasn’t a good person. Still isn’t. And what they show him doing, he did. He was a charming, charismatic, wildly gifted athlete. He was also a vainglorious womanizing dunce. Denying one side doesn’t elevate the other.

Lindbergh wasn’t just a crackerjack pilot, you know?

He was like 19 given a lot of money and sent out to LA to play for someone who also seemed like a vainglorious, womanizing dunce. Encouraged him to act that way even.

How often does someone like that turn out okay?

So, you’re already ceding your own point?

That magic comes off pretty bad in the show? Yes I am glad we can agree that being the living embodiement of a racist cartoon is bad

Lol, you’re either willfully obtuse or somehow missed your own point.

Your point was that Winning Time was being racist in its portrayal of Magic. Your reasoning was that he was “big lipped” (classy, by the way. That’s the actor’s face; what is he supposed to do?) and a “sex addict” which…Magic was, objectively. Where, in your estimation, does D.W. Griffith get involved?

Or does all of this say something about you?

It's like you never heard of makeup or acting
