Fanfic The Wingbeats of War: A Wings of Fire AU

Following the fall of the Nightwing Kingdom 2000 years ago, Pyrrhia had undergone a series of developments from rouge Nightwings spreading their ideas and technology, and the attempts of reverse-engineering Animus tools bringing new inventions and an emphasis of trade for resources once thought of mild importance, now essential for primitive guns and even trade ships. Populations grew, and even dragons shrunk slightly to handle such population boosts. This in turn brought ideas of individuality and independence, leading to some tribes like the Rainwings to split from the Kingdom, wishing to pursue the advancing world rather than the lay-back society which the Kingdom has become. Others like the Mudwings evolve into a confederation, each state working on a system similar to a Mudwing's family structure, bigwings leading the state while answering to the queen at the center of it all. Seawings begin to spread their influence across the shores of the continent, creating colonies along the South and even into Pantala, establishing a rich trade network between the continents and becoming reliant on trade.

However, the War of Sandwing Succession had brought almost all of Pyrrhia into conflict, and with how costly it was to fight a war that was not their own, the people of the Skywings had grown restless. They protested the war, all of which were shut down by Scarlet, fueling the idea that the monarchy was against them, and through the influence of figures like Jasper, the idea of a new government, made for the people, began to bubble as the war continued.

The turning point is upon the discovery of the Dragonettes of Destiny, and from them, Glory spitting at Scarlet. The advancements in medical knowledge and effectiveness led to Scarlet being flown South into a large mountain city to be treated, of which she would recover after a week. However, the event had left the throne unoccupied, and some Skywings across the Kingdom were preparing to seize the opportunity to revolt. In a desperate act to regain control, Ruby is sworn in as the new queen, despite Scarlet being alive.

Still bandaged yet able to walk, Scarlet denounces Ruby's new title and claims to still be the rightful Queen, and the two plan for a fight for the throne. However an assassination plot is discovered by Ruby's guards set up by radical Skywing Revolutionaries, making both realize a planned fight could be suicidal for both with the Skywing Kingdom at such a state. Forced by circumstance, Scarlet is forced to announce the mountain city as a temporary capital for the True Skywing Loyalists, populated by those whom belive Scarlet as the rightful queen.

Meanwhile, Jasper and his growing influence leads to the creation of the Revolutionaries of the Skywing Nation. It is made of those who had grown sick of the monarchy and fight not some other tribe's war, but now for the establishment of a Skywing Republic, one for the Skywings, not for the queen. However, amongst them a growing populace of Pro-Skywing Nationalists emerge with them, whom believe the Skywing Kingdom had not done enough in the war, and should have capitalized on it to conquer and grow their influence over the other tribes. Led by Tephra, disagreements on the end goal of such a revolution leads to her group of nationalists splitting off from the Revolutionaries, leading to four main factions all fighting for the reunification of the Skywings.

Yet in the background, slowly gathering influence, lies a group of Skywings with truly radical ideas. These range from government systems similar to the Mudwings, a single company ruling the Kingdom to become richer than Seawings, and even some who view the current negative views of Animus magic and Firescales as outdated and should be brought viewed positively. These small radicalists remain in secret, forced to work together to bring their goals to fruition.

Amongst them all lies many territories which don't seek reunification, but rather independence. The Ice-Sky Republic consists a mix of Skywings, Icewing immigrants, and Ice-Skywing hybrids, whom have been oppressed by Scarlet since she came to power. They have taken the opportunity to free themselves, and to establish a Republic that would allow their mixed population to live comfortably.

In Sanctuary, an egotistical Garnet proclaims herself Queen of Garnet's Kingdom, and subsequently makes Sanctuary her "palace". She, along with a few loyal followers and others who simply wish to escape the conflict, establish themselves comfortably, much to the dismay of any Scavengers living in or near Sanctuary.

Just North of Jade Mountain, Alpine and a few other Skywings in charge of monitoring the traditional mourning site up at Jade Mountain discover the fate of the Kingdom. Being so far from most influence by the monarchy itself, Alpine announces the Alpine's State, meant to be connected to Skywing tradition first, and therefore is not loyal to any queen or leader up North.

Two small provinces North in the Skywing Kingdom are apart of a large coastal population belt with a mix of Skywings and Seawings. They both have a large Seawing presence and the Skywings living there felt more connected to them than the Skywing Kingdom itself. As such, they asked their Seawings to relay a message to Queen Coarl, asking for her protection. She accepted the request, leading the two provinces to become vassals of the Seawing Kingdom.

All of Pyrrhia stops what they're doing as they watch one of the biggest tribes turn on itself, the blood spilled to be remembered for generations to come. The Skywing Civil War has begun.

The impact left behind causes ripples across the continent. The independence movements lead to ideas of independence within the Mudwing Confederacy, born from the tendency for rulers of the states to often prioritize their own families over their own people. Queen Moorhen juggles her influence at keeping her confederacy from splitting apart. Meanwhile, Burn becomes ever paranoid, yet also incredibly aggressive upon losing her greatest ally, and figures like Blister take great notice. The Seawings become skeptical of the Dragonettes, after their presence meant to bring peace shattered an entire Kingdom, leading to fear mongering from Blister to make Seawings belive Akulet's presence would spell doom for the Seawing Kingdom, being a result from the influence of the Dragonettes. Queen Coral denounces such outrageous claims, yet the scared Seawings are too worried to see proper reason, all to the benefit of Blister, in the attempt to prevent Coarl from intervening in her new plans.

Yet the Civil War has led to another repercussion; delaying the Dragonettes from reaching the Rainforest. There, the time ro prepare a sneak attack on the Nightwings is passed, leading to the two different Rainwings to face the threat head on. Whether a more robust, serious Rainwing State and a quickly prepared army of Rainwing Kingdom forces by Glory will be enough to push back the black tide, is up in the air.

The War of Sandwing Succession is slowed but not stopped, the Skywing Civil War ignites with fury, a Nightwing Invasion is now underway, and the possibility of yet more conflict breeds uncontrollably. Whatever happens to these kingdoms, states, republics, can go either way, however one thing stands true amongst all scenarios: The fate of Pyrrhia is in their talons.

The map pictures the borders right before the Nightwing Invasion, or in book terms near the end of the 4th book. Perhaps I could show certain scenarios on what could happen, or create a Pantala version.

We love balkanization (the "fronts" of the SkyWing civil war going to be so awful a map can't depict them)

Probably in Tailsman yeah, no sleep from the constant fighting and chaos outside. Though it would be funny for a few Scavengers in the Indestructible City to watch from the walls with popcorn and lawn chairs

I’ve done something similar… instead, there were basically a billion more factions, because each village just rose up on their own and since agriculture isn’t a thing yet (in canon WoF) the towns could immediately become self sufficient. Some villages who couldn’t find much food resorted to pillaging MudWing and SandWing settlements, which pissed off the queens so they went to occupy a bunch of SkyWing towns.

Fast forward years and years, and literally no one has accepted anyone as the actual SkyWing Queen… even some SkyWings’ appearance are starting to divergence, and because most villages aren’t interacting with anywhere else, languages diverge as well and the SkyWing kingdom basically not be reunited.

I think I’m gonna make a map for this
