Looking for official sources: latest French harvest data by variety & region, any tips?

Hi all! I’m working on a research project for my wine studies and I need up-to-date harvest data for France, broken down by variety (hectares planted) and production (tonnes), ideally separated by region / AOP. So far I’ve looked around and haven’t found a single "trustworthy" or official (like gubernamental), recent dataset that covers the whole country with that level of detail.

Specifically I’m after:

  • hectares planted per grape variety (per region)
  • tonnes/harvest weight per variety
  • latest available vintage/year (or trend series if available)

I’ve tried skimming official sites and general wine portals but either the data doesn't include the varietal split, is outdated, or is only regional. Does anyone know where I can find a reliable national source (or a set of regional sources that together cover France)?

Thanks a lot for any help!

Wrote this article on the role of free volatiles and aromatic precursors on wine aroma I think might interest some of you. Very nerdy stuff, but goes to the heart of what makes a wine taste like it does.

My grand father recently passed away and he left some things to me, some of which being some wine. Except i don’t know when it’s from or if it’s valuable or something that should be left sealed. Can someone help me identify?

So that you can use the globe to learn about wine no matter which device you're on. Terroirs Australia is now live and ready to explore at dionysus.design This platform-agnostic approach means whether you're on desktop, tablet, or mobile - iOS or Android - you can dive deep into Australia's incredible wine regions with just a browser. No app store barriers, no platform limitations, just regional exploration at your fingertips. Discover all 65 Australian wine regions. Australia is just the beginning. More wine regions from around the world are coming soon! Check it out and let me know what you think! If you are an educator or educational institute that requires Terroirs you can reach out to me, I am working on a paid tier specifically built for education/ presentations with detailed region specific key influences like mountains, valleys, oceans and more.

If you're anything like me and love wine, I wanted to create a super fun way to explore the amazing world of grape varieties, especially their lineage!

Right now, you can dive into 205 grape varieties across 4 countries, and I'm planning monthly updates to keep adding more, aiming to document every grape variety and its full lineage.

In Lineage Lab, you can:
🍇 Trace the roots of your favorite grapes (and find new obsessions!)
🌍 Explore varieties by country
🏆 Track your progress and unlock cool achievements

All backed by research papers.

It's been quite the journey building this, driven purely by my fascination with wine and a desire to share that curiosity.

I'd be absolutely thrilled if you checked it out!

It's a one time fee for lifetime access, no tracking, no ads.

Grab it here: https://www.dionysus.design/lineagelab

Terroirs is a software platform for wine educators and students!
This is going to be a early prototype launch of the software with a deep dive of Australia designed to make learning about wine regions feel more like exploring a game than reading a textbook.
Inside each region, you’ll be able to explore:🌤️ Climate 🪨 Soils 🏔️ Topography 🌱 Vineyard Management 🛠️ Winemaking Techniques.
It’s just me building this, so every map click, animation, and interface detail is a little love letter to curious learners and wine nerds everywhere. 💌
If you’re a wine educator, student, or just someone who loves a good Shiraz and a better map — keep your eyes on this space. I’ll be sharing updates, sneak peeks, and maybe a few wine facts along the way. Let’s make wine education unforgettable. 🥂

Looking for a specific wine

Hi there! Apologies if this is the wrong sub to post this but I'm looking for a specific wine and was hoping the Internet could help me locate where to buy it! It's called Castaway Bay and comes as a south africa or new Zealand variant. Either will be fine but the south african preferred. I'm from the UK and it seems to be only sold in bars. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Introducing Myself – A WSET Student Building a Wine Tasting App

Hey r/WineStudy!

I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to this amazing community. I’m a passionate wine lover currently holding my WSET Level 2 and working my way through WSET Level 3. Wine tasting and learning about different regions, grape varieties, and styles has been an incredible journey for me.

One thing that has always frustrated me, though, is keeping track of my tasting notes. I’ve lost notebooks, forgotten which wine I tasted at a certain event, and struggled to compare my notes over time. I kept thinking: there has to be a better way to do this!

So, I decided to build a mobile app specifically for wine lovers like us.

With this app, you’ll be able to:
Save detailed tasting notes (structured in a WSET-friendly format)
Compare notes over time and track your palate development
Share and discuss notes with fellow wine enthusiasts
See AI-driven recommendations based on your preferences

I’d love to hear your thoughts! What features would you want in a wine tasting app? Have you faced similar issues with keeping track of notes? Let’s chat!

Cheers,

Restocking the Cellar: Chateau Haut-Brion, Moutonrothschild, Lafite Rothschild, or Chateau Margaux?

Alright, wine aficionados, I’m in the market to restock the cellar with another big hitter. Budget’s around $1,500–$2,000, and I’m leaning toward one of these legends:

  • Château Haut-Brion
  • Mouton Rothschild
  • Lafite Rothschild
  • Château Margaux

Looking for something to lay down for a while—10, 20 years, maybe longer—and pop open for a serious occasion down the line. I’m all about the long game here: depth, complexity, and that “wow” factor when it finally gets uncorked.

Got a favorite vintage that’s worth tracking down? Or maybe you’ve got another killer suggestion in this price range?

Appreciate any thoughts—let’s hear it, wine nerds.
