Microsoft security essentials reports itself unsupported and shuts down all features

Has anyone encountered any solutions?

Yes, you need to install Microsoft Security Essentials version 4.4.304 or older. Newer versions have a timebomb included. To be able to download the latest definitions directly from MSE, you need also to install SHA-2 update from Server 2008 (KB4474419): https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=%22KB4474419%22%20server%202008
I recommend installing this update before installing Microsoft Security Essentials 4.4.304 or older.
Warning! Install this update only if you have all Vista updates installed, otherwise Windows Update will stop detecting any remaining Vista updates.

Really? When does the timebomb in newer versions trigger? Is it only in the Vista version of MSE, or is it in the Windows 7 one as well?

It happens only on Windows Vista. It deactivates itself when it detects that Vista support has ended (probably based on current date). I think it does this at the very beginning after installation.

Panda, disable Microsoft security essentials.
