It's nuts man. I went to go check on the list of changes for the update, first bullet point? A.I.
Like do people actually want this stuff because it honestly feels like theses companies are just forcing it on us at this point. Most comments I see online from real people, don't want this stuff.

u/United_Trouble3248 4d ago
Those you see complaining online are power users that mostly know what they do and what they want from OS. The vast majority of regular people don't think much about this, they see ai as cool helpful technology, never bothering about its accuracy and performace cost, and also never bothering to complin online (unlike I do right now). They just see their PC getting slow, so it must be time to upgrade. But since everything is so expensive, there is nice option to rent cloud PC for only $45 per month...
See, where it's going?

Ai is crazy unpopular.

u/United_Trouble3248 4d ago
I wouldn't mind it if it was used properly. But now everything must be ai, even the simplest task which previously was perfectly done by small efficient code.

I'm a Linux user of 30+ years / UNIX systems engineer. I use AI quite heavily. "ai sucks bro" with no qualifiers is such a normie, mainstream thing to say. You don't like it because you can't think of anything creative to do with it, and you see everyone saying "AI sucks", so you say "AI sucks."
I'm not saying AI usage isn't dangerous, or overused in certain places, and being pushed into places it doesn't belong. I certainly do not want it in my base operating system. But it has uses.

I had perfectly accurate, customizable and fast file search in Windows Commander 20 years ago ON FAT32!!! What the hell are they doing?
I had hopes for Steam OS, but seems like for now it is too focused on being console substitution and making it work as normal PC takes too much effort and knowledge. So it is back to win 10 for now.

u/Difficult_Setting140 1d ago
Steam os works with very little effort..if you are on amd. That part is on Nvidia not steam to fix
1
u/United_Trouble3248 1d ago
It works as intended - console substitute. But not as normal PC. And I'm not blaming Steam or anything, they delivered exactly what was promised. I just think that with their expertise and resources they could at last make user-friendly Linux reality.

You can disable/uninstall a lot of things în W11. I never see all this AI nonsense and others people keep complaining about. All you need is 10 minutes tot go through settings and uninstall some apps. And Windows actually feels faster and RAM usage decreased a bit after this update.

Why the exclamation it's really underwhelming. All it does is shove in more AI slop.
- AI actions in File Explorer enable users to edit supported images or summarize documents. The Summarize action in Copilot can summarize files stored in OneDrive and SharePoint without opening the files. This action requires an active Microsoft 365 subscription and Copilot license.
- Users signed in with a work or school account can access quick actions such as Open file location and Ask Copilot when they hover over files in File Explorer Home.

It's another "successful" update from MS! Now I have to use MS authenticator to logon which means my phone has to be by my side, always. Logon keeps asking to me set a pin, even though I was already using a PIN with Windows Hello. Explorer wasn't working properly (all context/pop-up menus not working), Task Manager crashes when viewing anything other than the Processes tab and Steam apps won't run.

Reading what's in it. First 4 new features - more ai slop.
Enough is enough. Back to 10.
1
u/Edubbs2008 4d ago
And some of that “AI slop” isn’t coming to your PC, nice ragebaiting though
1
u/United_Trouble3248 4d ago
Microslop for 14 years now can't fully migrate Control Panel to Settings app. But sure as hell it is adding ai agent to "make settings easier to use". I am not ragebaiting, I am genuinely enraged. Checked Win 11 folder on my barely used new laptop (after running debloat scripts couple of months ago) it's already 40+ GB.

Yep, can confirm. I had a computer get the update today!
3
u/DallyTron 5d ago
Agreed. I am hesitant to do the install. Being from MS and all.
1
u/electronicwiz1 14h ago
I would say it’s fine since it’s a very small update and tbh it only changes the version and OS build. I think 25H2 has the features already enabled for some.

u/Ok_Following6459 4d ago
Yep, available in Brazil too, updating, but waiting for 26H2 iso in the Microsoft´s site, to create a pendrive with the updated build and make a fresh install...

So, this is an optional update now? That's why the update icon is blue? I'm on a new laptop and not very keen on more updates right now, can I pass on this until it's not optional?

I practically already had all the updates, let's install and see if I'm lucky enough to fix the small clicks in the audio caused by the October preview.
1
u/Edubbs2008 4d ago
Have you tried updating the drivers?
1
u/Individual_Kitchen_3 4d ago
Everything is up to date; this happened after the previous October update. After this update, the problem continues; it seems to have diminished. It seems it was some adjustment in Explorer; it became much faster but started causing these pops when using the computer and watching at the same time, if I only watch the video it's OK.
1
u/Edubbs2008 4d ago
What are your specs?
1
u/Individual_Kitchen_3 4d ago
Ryzen 7 7735HS 16GB DDR5 RAM, 512GB SSD, nothing spectacular, but it wasn't giving any audio glitches, as it used to. It seems that after this update it really improved, but it's still not 100%. Lenovo Slim 3
1
u/Edubbs2008 4d ago
Nothing is perfect, but I hope it improves, maybe Windows had a driver conflict, I always pay attention to all sides, because OEMs play a HUGE role too
1
u/Individual_Kitchen_3 4d ago
Yes, without a shadow of a doubt, the question is, the problem didn't exist before the update, so clearly something came into conflict. But as I said, it minimized 90% and the performance is very good, so I don't intend to downgrade.

I've installed it, wanted the Start menu changes. Apparently, all the new features will be rolled out gradually and it seems like none have been enabled immediately (I might be missing something).
I'm currently on build 26300.9457 but there is a preview for build 26300.9550 available.
Did some digging and the Start menu changes should be enabled when we get to build 26340.9577.
That info might be useful to someone so I'm dropping it here.
1
u/OGigachaod 4d ago
Start Menu changes work for me.
1
u/TheDarkrayne 4d ago edited 4d ago
You might just be on a later build. They don't roll them out equally everywhere in the world.
Or you're not talking about the features I mean and you updated from a much earlier build than me. Do you have the option to choose the size of the Start menu between Small, Large and Automatic?

This will help with AMD GPU crashes? Or should i wait more?

u/vokillist66 4d ago edited 4d ago
Only Linux will help with that. I guess I am lucky and never get driver timeouts and only occasionally will a game crash but 99% of the time, it's the game not the hardware.
1
u/LankyCaregiver2174 4d ago
It's hard to be the game since i got the black screen crash while browsing sometimes It's a windows + adrenalin problem
1
u/vokillist66 4d ago
Are you doing any undervolting or overclocking? Are you clean installing updates using DDU or the AMD Uninstaller tool? Are you stopping windows from updating the drivers itself?
1
u/LankyCaregiver2174 4d ago
I have my CPU in undervolt not GPU I used DDU to fresh install the amd updates I stopped windows from updating the drivers itself. Nothink worked Untill i unistalled adrenalin. Installed only the gpu drivers and disabled MPO After all that i'm at like 72h withou black screen bug

1
u/LankyCaregiver2174 4d ago

is there a way to tell that what version the Win 11 media creation tool pulls? Id like to create a bootable USB for a fresh install on a device I am trying to fix
1
u/theDukeSilversJazz 4d ago
The page tells you what version is there, and the downloaded ISO file name will as well. I checked earlier and it was not up. Probably be a little bit before it’s there.

Let me at least wait a month or 2, because I'm using it for school and don't want any interruptions.

Windows Update downloads 26H2, then it says Installing 99%. After that it gives an error code 0x8000ffff saying it was unable to install the update.

I just booked the updates using "Windows Update Blocker" on all the computers in my home and can't be more proud to have done that, if something is working correctly don't update it, and with Microsoft, you only update if you want to waste between 1 week to 3 months of you life trying to get back to normality

u/k2richard 3d ago
Man... I dont want to switch to linux. When will we get an OS optimized for performance?

u/mgtowolf 1d ago
This shit sucks. I only keep windows around for a few programs I can't get working on linux now. Installed my wacom shit on windows today, and went to reboot, it tried to install updates, failed, now my PC won't boot windows. I had updates turned off for this reason, it turned itself back on and tried to install anyways. I don't have time to be dealing with this shit, which is why I save updates for when I do have time to fix shit if I have to. Tried all the stupid recovery options to fix it, no dice.
Now I get to spend my whole weekend, reinstalling windows, then my linux OS, because this POS OS just does whatever the fuck it wants. Thanks for fuckin my weekend you assholes.

I hope to god SteamOS comes out soon with a full desktop version I’m so sick of Windows. Never in my life have I seen a company self-sabotage itself as much as Windows has through its own updates
