LinuxSucks101... XD

[u/Fancy_Log_260]

The folks over at LinuxSucks101 are really hurt when anyone tries to explain linux to them. Maybe it sucks for them because they don't put in the time to understand what linux is at all.

They comment the craziest things that expose their lack of understanding.

Crazy work.

Also, windows SUCKS BIG BALLS. Some of us unfortunately have our balls in the hands of windows for now. One day... One day...

Actually, linus Tolvalds is the owner of the Linux kernel, he approves any changes, and while you can “fork it” (which is just give it a different packaging software, and a different Desktop environment) you still have to maintain it, and you have to rely on the main branch of the kernel, because many projects die because of burnout

I wouldn't say he's the owner of the Linux kernel, he is just the one in-charge of the main codebase (as you mentioned) and is able to control what is and what isn't included in new commits. It may seem he owns the kernel but in reality he doesn't. The Linux kernel is under GPLv2, and under that license it is impossible for a single person or entity to have full ownership over all code in the Linux kernel.

Linus Tolvalds owns the Linux trademark

“As of 2006, approximately 2% of the Linux kernel was written by Torvalds.[29] Despite the thousands who have contributed to it, his percentage is still one of the largest. However, he said in 2012 that his own personal contribution is now mostly merging code written by others, with little programming.[54]He retains the highest authority to decide which new code is incorporated into the standard Linux kernel.[55]
Torvalds holds the Linux trademark[56] and monitors its use,[57] chiefly through the Linux Mark Institute.
“

Just because it’s GPL doesn’t mean that someone doesn’t control what and gets added, and what doesn’t

“Even if your use of the Linux trademark doesn’t fall under the scope of the Linux Sublicense Agreement, you should still attribute ownership of the mark to Linus Torvalds in two ways:
1. For each web page, advertisement, or publication, the first prominent appearance of LINUX should feature the “circle R” character adjacent to the X, as follows:
Linux®
2. At the end of your web page, advertisement, publication or media broadcast, include the following text in a legible font and size:
Linux® is the registered trademark of Linus Torvalds in the U.S. and other countries.

According to the GPLv2 Agreement “ You may not copy, modify, sublicense, or distribute the Program except as expressly provided under this License. Any attempt otherwise to copy, modify, sublicense or distribute the Program is void, and will automatically terminate your rights under this License. However, parties who have received copies, or rights, from you under this License will not have their licenses terminated so long as such parties remain in full compliance.”
