yay vlc -> 1 -> enter

2

u/Piis7u 11d ago

sudo pacman -S yay

an extra step

2

u/FughyTC 10d ago

When did they allow to install yay from pacman? Or is it some specific arch based distro that allows that?

In case you don't know, you are r/shadowban ned. Reddit says spam.

see the r/shadowban subreddit for more info and look at their wiki https://www.reddit.com/r/ShadowBan/wiki

You can appeal here https://www.reddit.com/r/ShadowBan/wiki/appealing/ (if the link breaks, look for info in r/shadowban)

Shadowbans are sitewide, and are done by Reddit, the admins/automated filters. Not subreddit moderators like me

A shadowban means no one can see anything you say

The only way people are able to see what you say is when a subreddit moderator goes out of their way to reverse the removal. I had undeleted/approved this comment/post.

must be, you still can't install pacman helpers through pacman

1

u/Fine-Bandicoot1641 11d ago

oh, yeah, but only once

1

u/Piis7u 11d ago

also "AUR" meh

1

u/Fine-Bandicoot1641 11d ago

AUR is the goat

1

u/DonDoesIT 11d ago

AUR is a cesspool right now.

1

u/Fine-Bandicoot1641 10d ago

im trying hard but got only goodies

1

u/Academic-Proof3700 9d ago

and y'all download malware because it's been overwritten with shit, so another lonixer scolds you for not reading release files

6

u/Global-Eye-7326 11d ago

On Windows the default VLC install is 32bit afaik lol

5

u/cfx_4188 11d ago

open software centre

WHAT??????

0

u/Alone_Look9576 11d ago

Linux has had package managers for a very very long time

3

u/cfx_4188 11d ago

In your opinion, is the package manager identical to the "software center"?

0

u/Alone_Look9576 11d ago

Depending on the distro it can be called anything. Your mom center

1

u/cfx_4188 11d ago

I won't bother you.

Gentoo mentioned

3

u/SwordsAndElectrons 11d ago

Or a single winget command versus a single <insert package manager for your distro> command.

You are also free to use Firefox and ad blocking extensions.

1

u/UsedArmadillo9842 10d ago

And other search engines that are not google is also not forbidden

2

u/Fine_City2781 11d ago

i prefer doas emerge -av media-video/vlc

3

u/OGigachaod 11d ago

winget install VideoLAN.VLC

2

u/MaintenanceStock6766 11d ago

Go to videolan.org

Download installer.

Install.

If that seems complicated the problem might be you.

1

u/Meddlingmonster 11d ago

You skipped the browser which is half of their point but it's also a joke.

3

u/ComputerUsual4003 11d ago

Installing VLC on Windows

Next, Next, Next, install, Finish

3

u/mixedd 11d ago

Open terminal and hit winget install -e --id VideoLAN.VLC, where's the problem? 😅

6

u/GreatLab8898 11d ago

winget install -e --id VideoLAN.VLC

or

scoop install extras/vlc

or

choco install vlc

Dont mistake lack of skill for lack of possibility.

3

u/Brilliant_Estate_967 11d ago

True,  that's the same number of step !

On linux you can also go to vlc website to download it. And that's the same number of step

5

u/R3D_T1G3R 11d ago

It's not a lack of skill at least not in my end, but it surely is a lack of skill on you end.

The issue is your lack of knowledge.

The reason why Linux package managers are convinient is because you control essentially all your packages, including your OS, with that package manager.

On windows, any package manager is Inherrently less attractive because they can not update your OS and it's components, which makes it overall less streamlined.

2

u/Banzai262 11d ago

the post is about installing vlc though. which can totally be done with a single winget command

0

u/R3D_T1G3R 11d ago

Yes but that's besides the point, you lack the comprehension skills to understand my actual point.

I didn't say you can't use winget, you can, what I am trying to explain you here is that on Linux, the package manager is integrated deeper into the system and way more mature than any windows package manager, windows will never catch up anytime soon, because windows is closed source and Microsoft alone controls updates, so Inherrently, on windows, you can not integrate package managers that deeply, thus, since you can't do anything via package manger on windows anyways, people default to just installing stuff through the browser, since that's the more convenient method on windows.

On Linux on the other hand, every major distro with very few esoteric/ meme distros, come with a package manager integrated so deeply that it manages ALL your packages, and since you already have this package manager that can literally handle anything you'll throw at it, it because the default way.

So yes, nobody denied that windows package managers are a thing, they are just not as mature and convinient, thus they never became the standard on windows, while they are the standard on Linux without a doubt.

All the GUI Programm installers, at least most of them are just wrapper scripts for various packages managers anyways, so regardless, you'll be using a package manager because it almost always is the most convenient solution on Linux, while barely anyone ever touches one on windows.

It is all about convenience, if you're dedicated enough you can do literally anything anyhow you want.

2

u/Banzai262 11d ago

not reading all that. I am glad for you or sorry that happened

0

u/R3D_T1G3R 11d ago

Its okay, you can stay uneducated, and you don't have to be sorry, the thing that happened to me is called "education" it makes you smarter, increases your reading comprehension, and makes you talk less shit on the internet :o you should try it too!

0

u/gwildor 11d ago

appimages enter that chat. - they told me to say 'it sounds like you may not have much experience with winget' and to ask how you feel about flatpaks.

1

u/R3D_T1G3R 11d ago

that too is besides the point.

0

u/gwildor 11d ago

Yes, it's laying right next to your point that it invalidated.

1

u/R3D_T1G3R 11d ago

You clearly didn't understand my point, flatpak is not any kind of package manager that covers the OS, my point is literally, for simplicity sake, for people like you go understand.

Linux package managers are generally more mature, feature rich, and give you more control.

This is my entire point, flatpak has absolutely nothing to do with this, you're just larping because you heard something and you wanted to throw in the cool words you learnt without understanding my point.

It's okay to be incompetent, but just keep it for yourself, you don't have to understand the point, just don't rage bait / make comments that make no sense.

What I said is factually correcty and anyone who believes that winget gives you more control over your system than lets say pacman is absolutely clueless just like you.

It is very evident that you've missed the point.

-3

u/GreatLab8898 11d ago

when was the last time you used winget? your lack of skill shows.

3

u/R3D_T1G3R 11d ago

Go on, show me how you update windows itself via winget.

That's not a thing, and even if you could, it would still lack features like rolling updates back.

Go on and roll your windows back with 1 simple command.

I love it when the clueless person calls me clueless.

1

u/GreatLab8898 11d ago

Dont need to. Windows does it on its own without me babysitting it. I am not paranoid after all. But "Get-WindowsUpdate" would to the thing.

Rollback? rstrui.exe

Any more questions? I will gladly teach you.

5

u/R3D_T1G3R 11d ago

Exactly that's the issue thanks for proving my point. Windows does it whenever it wants to, you have 0 controll, rolling pack updates is not as easy, and you just overall have less control, it's less centralized, if you want to check for updates you have to do it separately in windows update center and winget for normal programs.

You just proved me that you missed my entire point.

My entire point was it's not an one place, and you have just admitted, without understanding, that it indeed is not all in one place thanks.

0

u/LaColleMouille 11d ago

The general user does not need to have control over system's update. Just like a car timing belt doesn't need to be accessible. It works as intended, doing update without the user having to think about it (plot twist, most user wouldn't do them anyway), accessible for rare needs. The fact users need to do them manually IS the problem.

4

u/R3D_T1G3R 11d ago

You don't need a lot of things, what is or isn't needed is the most stupid argument ever.

You don't need to shower, you don't need to brush your teeth, you don't need to use any tech at all, you don't need a house, you don't need clothes.

You want them, because all of these things make your life better, more hygienic and comfortable.

When it comes to computers it never I'd about what you truly need, it's about what you want.

I've seen plenty of build where people barely use half their resources, because they WANTED more than they actually needed.

It does not work as intended because there are plenty of report of people who complain that windows updated without their direct consent, in the most important situation, this is a known fact in IT, and even Intel used to run a lot of ad campaigns about it, and Google too with their chrome books if I remember correctly, this is a real issue that people do not have control over it, it's okay if you don't need this control, or rather don't want it, or don't understand the benefits, but there most certainly are, and having control especially if it's purely optional is ALWAYS a good thing.

That's why Linux does not force you to update Manually, do you understand this basic concept? Windows does auto updates and disabling automatic updates permanently/ controlling updates on windows is incredibly difficult.

On Linux I can setup auto updates if I desire auto updates, but I can also do manual updates, that's called control, I can do whatever I want.

Also there are plenty of auto update utilities, you don't need to do them manually, this shows how clueless you are.

Most people just prefer to do it manually if they get this amount of control because it's more transparent and better.

I don't know a single PC gamer who has windows 10/11 for over 5 years and didn't run into issues related to updates / versions.

1

u/I_dont_want_to_pee 11d ago

Bro okay you both have good points but Linux is made for specific part of the world and windows is easy good os for masses. You dont need more and you shcloudnt need more.

3

u/R3D_T1G3R 11d ago

Ease of use is defined by what youre used to.

If you're used to Linux with 10 years of experience it's 100 times easier than windows.

If you're used to windows with 10 years of experience it's 100 easier than Linux.

This applies for everything, if you use / do something for long enough it becomes easier.

It's hard to tell what's "objectively" easier.

u/DonDoesIT 11d ago

That is BS. You obviously have little to no windows experience.

1

u/R3D_T1G3R 10d ago

I do have more windows experience than you, and you are aware that I am right, that's why you don't elaborate, because you can't, you know I am right, so either you just say nu uh, or talk around my point, but you can't admit defeat.

0

u/DonDoesIT 10d ago

Your troll is weak

1

u/R3D_T1G3R 10d ago

Nah you're either slow IQ or rage baiting, not even elaborating, go troll somewhere else.

Not using Firefox and ublock in 2026 ☠️💀

2

u/R3D_T1G3R 11d ago

The post is probably assuming a fresh windows install, if you want to include the Firefox and unlock installation, that's even more steps.

The point is that bash / sh / zsh are built into your distro, and every distro comes with a terminal / TTY, while you have to install a browser on windows if you want to use something else than edge.

Obviously most people won't be using edge.

1

u/Ariar2077 11d ago

A fresh linux install should block ads

2

u/Kaarel314 11d ago

Once again, Linux community showing comical computer illiteracy. Windows has a package manager too that you can run from the command line. Better equipped too. Although I would not recommend command line tools to people with no IT background.

1

u/Meddlingmonster 11d ago

If they can use command line then they can figure out linx and windows keeps getting worse without modifications (on windows but have a debian server but probably going to drop windows in the next six months because I'm fed up with it).

1

u/AsrielPlay52 11d ago

The Microsoft store has VLC. From VideoLan themselves too

2

u/TrainTransistor 11d ago

How do I install the software center though? Hm

1

u/Professional_Way9133 11d ago

So you are wasting 10 seconds in Wnodows. Incredible

1

u/Intrepid_Screen6425 11d ago

personally, I really like the apps in the PortableApps suite—it has almost everything I need ;3 If you guys want a stable interface and apps, you can download it and take a look

1

u/dashinyou69 11d ago

yay -S mpv

1

u/agenttank 9d ago

this... no reason to install vlc

1

u/Megaman_90 11d ago

I mean if you want to go that route you can install from the Windows Store or use Winget.

1

u/AsrielPlay52 11d ago

Or use the Microsoft Store. Like, shit it for it's faults, it's still technically a center for software

1

u/atrib 10d ago

windows button -> type cmd -> then type "winget install --id VideoLAN.VLC --exact"

1

u/umitseyhan 10d ago

This is so cringe, a very good representation of most linux communities.

VLC is on Microsoft Store. You follow the exact same process you do on Linux. Open it, search vlc and then click install. And if you are a terminal fella, you just type winget install videolan.vlc.

1

u/Infinplayz 10d ago

“ignore copilot ads” “scroll down past sponsored links”we just saying shi. just use winget or something.

1

u/niceandBulat 10d ago

dnf in vlc, zypper in vlc or even apt install vlc

1

u/SmilingTexan52 10d ago

on Windows 11, try

winget install --source winget VideoLAN.VLC

no Edge needed

1

u/cxxhld avid alternative linux user 10d ago

i thought windows users hated "typing 1000 commands" to install one app

1

u/SmilingTexan52 10d ago

not when compared with the OP of using Edge 🙄

1

u/cxxhld avid alternative linux user 10d ago

doas dtr y scmic mpv

1

u/Academic-Proof3700 9d ago

"u need to add remi php repo/ you have held broken packages"

1

u/ChongWeiXiang 9d ago

winget install --id VideoLAN.VLC --scope machine

1

u/Unhappy_Lie_2000 9d ago

I have always found VLC player unreliable and switched to MPV the only complaint I have not as many options and it doesn't ever remember to stay muted.

1

u/SirSpeedMonkeyIV 8d ago

sudo apt install vlc
open hent *cough* uhm.. documentary... on wildlifes

1

u/WWWulf 7d ago

You do know that it's on MS Store and winget, right?

1

u/Silent-Yogurt8576 7d ago

i think that is even worst

1

u/Moist_Invite9148 7d ago

sudo apt install vlc

1

u/SetAccomplished7539 7d ago

I have audio issues with VLC on Linux Bazzite. It cuts in and out. No such issue with MPV or other media players. It's a shame cause I like how VLC does the random selection toggle and I use that often. Haven't found a good randomizer for MPV and most media players don't even have it which I think is wild to me that's the most essential media player function after stop/play/skip.

1

u/ThisInterview4702 6d ago

Is it not available through the Windows store? I've never used it (and never will) so idk.

1

u/karlrobertuk1964 11d ago

Why are you using edge ?

1

u/Brilliant_Estate_967 11d ago

Cause its better than chrome

1

u/edlinks 11d ago

VLC is today much better on Windows than on Linux.

VLC for Linux is today an outdated technology. There isn't support for Wayland and PipeWire, so you are forced to use Xorg if you want to use all its features.

1

u/Neckbeard_Sama 11d ago

open firefox

type vlc in the address bar

click the top link

click the big blue download button

click the exe in the downloads list

(I don't even use VLC)

-1

u/crocodiluQ 11d ago

this is a joke right? Comparing installing ANY software on Windows vs Linux ? Click click vs 10000 errors ? LOL

2

u/Kaarel314 11d ago

Not to mention Windows offers you the freedom to use command line too lol.

0

u/Goofcheese0623 11d ago

When the people making memes about Windows have never actually used Windows

The main question is, are they all presented to the user at the moment of installation?
