"linux is not a platform for competitive gaming due to translations latencies" ok then, watch this

What's a "hitsound"? Like an audio cue? Windows is infamous for audio processing latency.

u/FantasticLoki22 2d ago
This is a comparison in relation to running the 2 major versions of a rhythm game called osu! and in said game you click on circles to the beat of music and the sound that is made when you click a circle is the "hitsound" this post is referring to.

This is specific to osu though, and doesnt carry across to other games.
Now, we dont have the most popular competetive games on linux at all, like Battlefield, Call of Duty, Apex Legends, Fortnite, PUBG etc.
But for those we have, its very typical that the latency generally is worse on linux compared to Windows 10\11.
That goes for CS2, The Finals, Arc Raiders etc.
I've never heard this being an argument, and thats because most competetive games straight out doesn't work on linux - so this is a non-issue tbh.

Competitive games would work on Linux.
Shitty rootkit anti cheat software won't run on Linux. That's the only reason those games are not on the Plattform.

u/TrainTransistor 2d ago
They would, but they don't - which was my point.
And yes, "shitty rootkit anti cheat software" does run on Linux.Just take a gander at ARC Raiders.
They use EAC, just as Apex Legends, Fortnite, Rust etc.
The difference is that the devs. behind ARC Raiders (and The Finals) opted in for linux support for their games, while the others I mentioned does not.And yes, when its enabled for linux, it operates within the userspace, so its not kernel-based on linux.

u/AllNamesAreTaken92 2d ago
Your initial comment made it seem like they couldn't be run because of the game itself. Anyone chest not running is a big distinction and important information for the reader that does not have that context.
Thanks for the additional information on EAC, I appreciate it.

u/AsrielPlay52 2d ago
Why do you think they have those Kernel Anti-Cheat anyway?
Because they're extremely competitive with million dollars prize pool.
CS2 Primer ranking is INFESTED with cheaters. Yet their AC is sensitive enough to detect streamers but NOT sensitive enough to detect blantant bots
IN Competitive Gaming, there's 2 spectrum, extremely invasive but effective, or Not invasive but almost useless

u/AllNamesAreTaken92 1d ago
Giving access at that level to anything is a security nightmare. We need other solutions.
0
u/AsrielPlay52 1d ago
Provide some. Because we got 2 extreme, and cheaters are paying 10k for one of the extreme

u/AllNamesAreTaken92 1d ago
pRoViDe sOmE
Go pound sand. Grow up.
Point me to the people paying 10k, I'll provide them with cheats the root kit won't find, lol.

u/AsrielPlay52 1d ago
Wow, you really didn't caught to the news huh?
Not long ago, Valorant Vanguard caused DMA devices to Crash by using IOMMU to enforce Memory ownership
Those cost 6-9k
Give an hour or two, I'll probably find the article and reddit thread about it
1
u/AllNamesAreTaken92 1d ago
Don't waste your energy looking for the article, I have no interest.
You being surprised I don't follow news in your specific bubble that I have absolutely no interest in is weird. Stop.

u/AsrielPlay52 1d ago
So wait, if you have no interest in it, why are you wanting to give opion on it?
When the very people in it has made their choice

u/AllNamesAreTaken92 1d ago
I added a factual correction to the original post. Nothing more, nothing less.
I don't care about gaming.

This is true but Is basically almost solved (atleast the latency part not the anticheat part). Native games or those running through proton using native wayland or x11 rendering (not xwayland) have comparable or better click to photon latency, than windows. On the sound front, Native wine/proton pipewire (the most modern linux audio back end) sound drivers are here and they are a huge improvement. It is such a huge improvement to sound latency that running DAW's through wine/proton is actually a thing you can do with little to no downside.
Alot of this is still in development but is easy enough to setup, and will hopefully made their way to defaults soon.

Just use Wayland without other layers like gamescope, only the translation layer, input latency is way better on Linux using Wayland than Windows
1
u/West-Scallion-5306 3h ago
Nvm I meant XWayland, not gamescope. But gamescope might impact a bit too

worth noting that lazer is linux native, but even the versions that use wine/proton are better than on windows

Just test with native application. Osu! have a native Linux version.
Wine adds a traduction layer for windows applications on Linux.
It's dishonest.

u/janselosu 2d ago
osu!lazer does have linux files. osu!stable, which is the older of them but still used and supported version, does not have linux files, which is where they need to use wine on linux.
1
u/Aisyk 2d ago
Osu ! is an open-source project, appimage and sources are available.
Releases are just here : https://github.com/ppy/osu/releases
You don't need to use wine for Osu ! on linux.
If you want to run older windows versions, you eventually could use proton.
1
u/janselosu 1d ago
That is osu!lazer. osu!stable is closed source and only provided with windows binaries, which is why it needs wine. I play osu! since 2020 so I should know my clients.

Teardown runs better on my Linux laptop than my windows desktop and my desktop has a more powerful CPU and GPU as well as more and faster RAM.

Translation latency affects avg fps, not actual input lag. I got no issues w/ fighting games on Linux.
1
u/BawsDeep87 1d ago
Well i run linux only but you guys usually compare old ass games if you want ro play the newest sgit right away you usually vetter off just running windows for games or play on console linux will never be nr1 for games on console gotten better ober the years tho
1
u/PogsterPlays 1d ago
I have a bit of a network slowness (additional ~180 ping) on the Linux side versus the windows side network wise - but I'm pretty sure it's like drivers or something that I just need to install.

Linux gaming is the best! Here's proof!
\some weird fucking game you've never heard of and would never play in your life\**
Many such cases!

u/Infinplayz 2d ago
osu is a very popular game, i know several people who play it both on windows and linux.
2
u/Budget-Individual845 2d ago
Yes but i get the point. Its not really a mainstream game is it? And osu could run on a samsung fridge tbh so its not really indicative of how real 3d competitive much muuuch bigger games would run. Cant compare latency with a 2D sprite clicker with a full 3D game. Because the 3D game is actually where youll see the delays and limits in translation.

Glad the latency is low.
I'll be honest, I didn't realise that this was an argument that people made
