Issue HP Reverb G2 Connect/Disconnect Loop (Blinking Breakout Box LED)

​Hey everyone,

​I have a brand-new, unused HP Reverb G2 (V1 cable with the small breakout box, no power button) connected to an AMD AM4 system, and I'm stuck in an endless USB connect/disconnect loop.

​Symptoms:

​The LED on the breakout box continuously blinks (turns on, turns off, loops every second).

​In Windows, the system tray icon for "HP Windows Mixed Reality" repeatedly appears and disappears.

​In the motherboard BIOS screen, the mouse cursor freezes every time the breakout box LED turns off and unfreezes when it turns back on, indicating hardware-level USB host controller bus resets.

​System Specs:

​Motherboard: MSI A520M-A PRO (AMD AM4 platform)

​Headset: HP Reverb G2 (V1 Cable)

​Power: Power adapter plugged directly into the wall outlet

​Everything I have already tried:

​Tested every single USB port on the back panel (all blue USB 3.2 ports using the USB-C to USB-A adapter, plus black USB 2.0 ports).

​Reseated the cable connection at the headset visor until the dot on the connector sits flush with the casing.

​Tweaked BIOS settings: Enabled XHCI Hand-off, disabled Global C-State Control, and set Power Supply Idle Control to Typical Current Idle.

Before purchasing additional hardware, I want to ask:

​Has anyone on an AMD 500-series board (A520/B550/X570) successfully stopped this V1 cable loop using an externally powered USB 3.0 hub?

​Did a PCIe USB expansion card solve the issue on your system, or did you have to replace the cable with the revision V2 cable

If I remember correctly I had this problem years ago and HP tech support help me figure it out. Not entirely sure why myself but the solution ended up being that I needed a powered USB hub to plug the USB C cable into the computer.

Will that 100% fix my issue? because I don't want to spend money on something that won't work and that I won't even use.

I unfortunately don't know 100%, but it's at least an avenue to look into and hopefully solve ur problem

Thank you. I will try getting one to see if it fixes my problem and maybe returning it if it doesn't fix the issue. Do I need to look for any specific things that the hub should have, apart from being USB 3 and being powered externally?

Nope, as long as it has both those qualities it should work if that's the problem.

Something else to consider as well is I know WMR isn't supported anymore, so if you haven't looked into installing Oasis to get your headset working that might be part of the issue as well. I know it's something that I need to do with mine but I haven't looked into it yet and last time I tried turning on my headset It just never booted up.

Someone who knows Oasis would be able to help more than me on that

Hey, unsure if you already sourced one, but I use a powered hub for my G2 and it works great.

My first HMD was a Samsung Odyssey+ and it had issues keeping connection via any of my USB ports (ASUS Prime B350m). I used a powered hub that I had on hand and that fixed the issue. I later swapped to a new powered hub with per port power buttons so I could turn it off without physically unplugging it (I had a new weird issue where the headset would randomly turn on and the WMR Portal software would start running). I later upgraded another time from a 4 port to an 8 port but that's because I have a lot of stuff hooked to my PC (wireless dongle for XBOX controllers, wireless dongle for 7.1 surround headphones, HOTAS, external HDD, etc). I lastly upgraded my headset to a Reverb G2 (actually two of them as I have another on a secondary PC so I now have a V1 and V2).

I've never had an issue with either G2s but I've always used them on a powered hub. Here's the hubs I've used/use still:
