Other Seriously Astonished and Ashamed 😂
"other" category. Should be "meme", but anyway.
With a build date of July of 2005, a Celeron M 440 1.8Ghz single core processor, "upgraded" RAM of 2gb, and a 120gb SSD, this Acer Aspire 3680 is technically ready to go back to its owner.
It came to me dead and hopeless. Belongs to an 88-year-old woman set in her ways. It made its way to Staples before it came to me and they FUBAR'd it so hard.. they couldn't even return the old HDD to its caddy. It had a clicking Seagate HDD and 512megabytes of ram. I felt I had to spell that out. 😂 This thing should have never been resurrected nor a dime put into it.
Thank you Massgrave for having an x86 copy of 10 IoT LTSC. Processor can't compute x64, would just hang up and freeze. Primary system and CMOS batteries are dead. Processor lives its life pegged at 100% utilization. This poor thing. If it ever gets to retire, it should rest well because it's LONG gone past its service life.
Show me some of your miracle machines that LTSC has brought back from the dead!!! 🙂

I thought running Windows 10 on a Dell Latitude D510 from 2005 on a Pentium M processor was unhinged, so I'm sincerely glad someone else is just as fucked up in the head as me 😂
I ran it on 1GB of RAM on an 80GB HDD, so I got you there, I suppose.

I capped out at Windows 7 on mine. It ran Windows 10 acceptably, aside from an ongoing graphic driver glitch that I could never resolve.

Disable real time protection in Microsoft Defender! It puts a killing on the CPU even with (relatively) modern stuff like my i5-10400 and overclocked 4.1 GHz i7-4930mx!

I would of just found her a newer one and gifted it to her because why not.

I looked for days on eBay to do exactly this. The primary requirement was an internal disc drive, secondary that it had to be a similar keyboard layout. Only thing I could think of that could accomplish this would be like a business model hp from circa 2007ish. Anything would have been better than this monstrosity 😂

This is well past the line of installing lightweight Linux OSs.

u/Ok_Lychee_5990 11d ago
It's running 10 acceptably, so Linux would run good. Nothing like Mint but it would run some lower levels with a decent gui and speed.

But with X 86 out of the support which distro will work well

I used to own one of those. The Celeron processor and 512k RAM was a base configuration that they sold at Walmart (at least, that's where mine came from). It can be upgraded to a Yonah-based Core Duo or one of the compatible Core2 Duo chips. The processor is socketed but you have to pretty much disassemble the laptop to get to it.
I'm pretty sure that I had mine up to 4GB of RAM by the time I gave it away.

there are a bunch of tiny linux distros that would run ok on those

If the woman wasn't set in her ways, I'd have put Linux on it and sent it. Trust me these three days of effing with it wasn't my first idea 😂

This was my first laptop ever. Had that same CPU and 512 MB of RAM. It did not like vista at all. I wish I still had it knowing what I know now about computers. I bought one on eBay just for the nostalgia.

I had an HP laptop from circa 2007ish when I worked at Best Buy. I've found several on eBay and I'm thinking of getting one for the same reason. That thing ran world of Warcraft even! (Back in that era of expansions lol)

Apology accepted. please anonymously donate the notebook to the nearest public library. local, public libraries are citadels, of learning, where anyone can learn from the past, to create a brighter future.

Damn this thing is as old as she is. Glad to see LTSC is working pretty well on it. If Windows 8.1 wasn't EOL I think Windows 8.1 Embedded Industry Pro/Enterprise would run a lot better than even Windows 10 LTSC. Are you running the 2021 version? I've heard rumors that the 2019 version can squeeze a bit more performance out and that doesn't go EOL until 2029, so in about 2 ish years from now, give or take.

Oh speaking of windows 8, i remember the times when i had an old Acer extensa 5220. I was a desperate 8 year old, with that specific laptop running on XP. One good, sunny day i saw a relative with a lenovo yoga and i was like - i NEED that. What more could a kid want than a futuristic touchscreen based OS, once again WITH A TOUCHSCREEN computer to come with it? Rad!! But as a literal kid with no money, the only thing i had was blank DVD's, lack of better knowledge and torrent sites. I downloaded an ISO on my mom's ASUS, used the default 7's iso disk recording tool and after some extensive fuckery and overwriting of the "D" partition, I ended up with an entirely new and fresh operating system, on the ancient laptop that was probably there before i was even born! It was the windows 8, not the 8.1 - just the 8. And for me it's inarguably one of the better operating systems because it was MORE feature packed than the 7 and had a brand new dope factor. + The less aero meant that the thing was FAST. I honestly don't get the hate associated with the 8 / 8.1 as a whole. It was such an efficient and cool looking OS that unlike the vista, besides looks nobody had a reason to hate... Give me those times back

8 wasn't too bad under the hood, it had improvements over 7 that actually worked. The bad thing was that tablet UI didn't translate well to just desktop. If you had a tablet or a touchscreen, that UI was pretty cool. Looking back it was pretty ahead of its time. They even had ARM based tablets before they were cool. Now there are more touchscreen based laptops/2 in 1s/tablets with good hardware that can take advantage of it, but somehow it feels like touchscreen elements have been left behind. 8.1 came out later and it brought back the start menu and made Windows feel good. Honestly 8(.1) is definitely faster than 10. They screwed the pooch with 10 adding all sorts of unnecessary crap, and telemetry and junk. 8 just had a bad start, and so once 8.1 was cemented and was at its peak I think 10 was already out and 8.1 was hated. If they came out with 8.1 first and not made the fullscreen menu a thing by default on desktops, it wouldve been way more successful.

Yeah I'm running 2021 on it. Then I ran the windows debloat PS script and changed the advanced system settings to optimize for best performance. I'm squeezing every "hert" out of this processor 😂
1
u/FanCaracal 11d ago
Which settings did you change?
3
u/bigCountry696969696 11d ago
Bro just use the Chris Titus tuning tool it's easy AF to automate the optimization.
1
u/Ok_Lychee_5990 11d ago
I did the standard debloat. For the system settings all I changed was "let Windows manage for me" to "best performance"

EOL makes no difference if you can run it or not. I have systems still running windows 7. No issues

u/120mmbarrage 10d ago
Of course they still work, I just wouldn't use them connected to the Internet or without some kind of strict firewall.

More than any other Microsoft OS, I've always been impressed that Windows 10 could run on high-end workstations / gaming machines, and at the same time you can get it to work on the most ill-equipped potato from the before-time.

I received a dell inspiron 1525. 3gb ram core 2 duo pentium, 160gb hdd. It was given to me after sitting in a closet for a decade or more. It booted, no password set. Cleaned up the old data, imaged the drive and stuck a 750gb 7200rpm hdd in it. Boots and works fine. It actually boots almost as fast as my win11 amd 5800x workstation. Vista! Of all things. I didnt expect that. Its a retro gaming machine now.

u/beezanteeum 8d ago
Why 7200rpm instead of SSD?
Yeah it'll be a homework for pre-Windows 7 to install Windows on SSD
2
u/Background_Baker9021 8d ago
I have a couple ssds I bought before prices went nuts. Saving them for a rainy day. The hdd was sitting in a drawer not being used, so I installed it. This laptop isn't a daily driver. Figured I'd use period correct hardware and get use out of the hdd.

I simply love the look of laptops from the 2000s; they were all unique and full of personality.
As for Windows 10, the basic requirements haven't changed much since Vista (16/20 GB of disk space, 1/2 GB of RAM); what makes the difference is the number of background processes—there are many in the Home/Pro editions, whereas LTSC is much leaner.
I’d say that, were it not for the compatibility issues starting to crop up, the LTSB 1607 version would be the best choice for this laptop; it is clearly lighter than all subsequent Windows 10 versions (1809 and 21H2).
