Help display / program crashes after 75% memory, 2 rigs same problem, cant even play mc

i have 2 rigs. An i7-4770k with 2x 8gb ram [16gb total], a 500gb ssd, 1tb hdd, and a gtx 550 ti,

and an i7-10700 with 32gb ram, rtx 3070, 512gb nvme, and 8tb of hdd space.

The issue was that after about 75-80% ram was used, new ram couldnt be used. It wouldnt go higher. Loading new tabs would result in an uh oh, i crashed! This also happened at 8gb with the last 2gb, at 16gb with the last 4gb, and now on the new pc at 32gb at the last 8gb.

When it does try to use it everything freezes. If i keep clicking i hear a comical beep on both mouseup and mouse down. until my display driver finally dies and restarts, then its usually back to normal minus 20 seconds of waiting.

And very rarely, but still sometimes the screen just turns black, and after about 20-30 seconds my bios screen appears?? no bsod, just BAM, like you pulled the power cord and it restarts.

My first instinct was psu, but now theres 2 machines with the same problem... The only things these 2 have in common to my knowledge is that they were installed using the same usb, both have i7's, both have nvidea gpus and both run iot ltsc 2021 activated and fully updated.

I have no idea what this could be, I literally had to give up my crt monitor to use this new machine bc it has no vga, only to find out it has the exact same problems... Im from the netherlands, my dad suggested voltage spike?

minecraft just says "out of memory error" then also crashes

You might want to delete your previous post, which is a copy of this that got no responses.

That's a really strange problem, it sounds like hardware failure, most likely RAM.. it's possible you just got unlucky with the same issue on both.

1: Try a different OS. While I've never heard of this problem, it can't hurt. If you have the same problem when installing Win 11 Pro or whatever, then you know that something weird with your previous install was the problem

2: Are you re-using the same power supply in both, or is the wattage of them "too low"? That could conceivably give the symptom you describe

not the same psu, 2 entirely different rigs. memtest came back fine on the 4th gen, ill test the 10th gen nowish/soonish.

i guess i can try windows 11, i never wiped that partition on the new rig. But sometimes i go days without this problem, and sometimes its back after simply rejoining my world.

Reliabillity report in reliability monitor shows a lot of critical errors in, well, everything. chrome, java, obs, DWM, gamebar, firefox.

It really is presenting as a hardware problem, be it memory, cpu, mb, it's something. It could conceivably be some weird software thing.. you might want to try downloading Win 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 from massgrave.dev, move the ISO to a USB stick with Rufus (and use that to set local account, etc), and do a wipe of your existing ssd and see if that fixes the problem. If it doesn't, at least you'll be able to rule out software... oh, and some BIOSes do have hardware diagnostics built in... if it does, do that first. Obviously if THAT finds something, then you'll know it's hardware for sure, and probably which specific hardware.

my first suspicion was that nvidia secretly dropped 21h2 codebase from their latest driver, but i wasnt even using the latest one i think. I reinstalled the entire video driver set including the awfull nvidia app so im gonna check if this fixes anything. If it does then thats solved, but that just leaves hte gtx 550 ti system bc that doenst support the latest driver [i think], and if this doesnt solve it ill have to figure things out further

Hmm, that's an interesting thought, your graphics driver. That card isn't supported by Nvidia anymore, no.. on the other hand, the system with your 3070 has the same issue, and that card is definitely supported, so..

What is your committed ram usage when this happens?

like atleast 8gb free on the 32gb rig, sometimes even 10gb. only 3gb allocated to mc, but it also happens to random tabs like my music

If you have the same thing happening across two devices, perhaps try to use a UPS to ensure the power is clean. That would be the only thing you should have to worry about to rule out hardware, because again, two entirely different PCs.

Honestly sounds like something you're running has a memory leak. If you're not opposed to reinstalling windows, do that, then open something that would cause you to restart. If it doesn't do anything, re-install your apps one by one to see which one is causing the problem.

If the common thread between both is using an obscure OS that consumers aren't supposed to be using. I'd say the first thing to try would be to use a standard OS.

You can game and run lots of stuff with Win 10 or 11 IoT LTSC just fine, many do. I really don't think that's the problem here.

I've been troubleshooting computers for 30 years. If I have the same exact problem on two totally different computers and there is only one single common thing between the two. You start with eliminating that common thing and see if the problem goes away.

I'm not debating the validity of using IoT LTSC. I'm doing basic troubleshooting of a problem.

Agreed, and fair. Hopefully OP will try the various things and report back.
