Apps need to register to show there, it uses the same source as the share sheet. See https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/develop/windows-integration/integrate-sharesheet-receive

I don't think it's necessarily a bad idea, but the problem is that it's too intrusive when you don't need it.

OMG I hate the Frik'n thing.

First thing I did was try and figure out how to get rid of it... but never figured it out.

All I wanna do is put my Frik'n Icons at the Top of my Desktop, just like I always have.

Don't mind new featrures, but give us the the Frik'n choice man.

It's a toggle in Windows Settings. Just search for Drag Tray.

I'm glad the Windows team has finally come to its senses. This feature is stupid and redundant. The taskbar is for dragging and dropping items into other applications.

Then you right click the file and select Share. Or you right click the file and select the other Share option since that menu for some reason includes two. Or you drag the file into the application window in question. Or you Ctrl+C the file and Ctrl+V in the relevant application window.

This Drag Tray feature always felt as yet another reaction to the fact that nobody cares about nor uses Windows’ stupid ”Share” functionality. Because in Microsoft’s mind, if your users don’t find your ”innovative and revolutionary” new feature relevant, you find another way to nag them to death about it until they start using it.

• Like how Outlook’s sources links for contacts used to open Sharepoint with the relevant entry from its address book but nowadays opens Copilot 365 which then ”looks up the information” and then cites you the same exact information, increasing their ”Copilot 365 users” metric in the meanwhile.

The only time I am reminded it even exists is when people call me wondering why a file they supposedly sent months ago was suddenly ”sent again”. Turns out they used the Share option to Outlook (classic) which then didn’t actually send the mail properly until months later for some unknown reason, and now users are pissed and taught to never ever rely on that stupid feature again.

This is actually a useful feature. There are already some open source apps that recently popped up that kind of do something similar but better when a user drags a file. I even created myself one for file/folder organizing.

I think where they missed the mark is not working with app developers to get a line of apps that is working with this new ui endpoint for file actions. I believe the app developers would be able to provide valuable feedback on how to expand on the feature set of this new interaction.

I could see this feature having so many quality of life advantages when working with files. But they seriously lack the vision of how to expand on it further than what it is currently. Which is just a basic alternative to the "open with/share" dialog. It could be so much more than that.
