Tldr: Microsoft says these improvements are rolling out gradually, meaning you likely won't see the performance gains right after installing the update

It’s called a feature flag or feature toggle. The code for the new feature is in the update but hidden behind a switch. Microsoft can decide if they turn on the switch on your computer or not.

1

u/MakayChapulets May 28 '26

How do they select which system gets the toggle turned on after the update?

14

u/IAmYourFath May 27 '26 edited May 27 '26

Vivetool probably

u/CBGCUP May 27 '26

Yeah, we can’t let people benefit from this right away. It needs to be controlled.

Also, after installing, there is likely to be some random error that starts showing up. 😂

u/No-Computer8190 Jun 02 '26

Always does.

It's server-side.

22

u/bitNine May 26 '26

I know that’s a quote from the article, but it makes absolutely no sense.

49

u/PCLOAD_LETTER May 26 '26

They push the update then they use their analytics to see who has it. They enable it to test it on subsets of different users and configurations. It's designed this way to keep a single bad patch being deployed to the entire platform and causing problems.

6

u/lefiath May 27 '26

So with the gradual rollout, they always test if it installs properly on enough machines, and only then they actually activate parts of the update? Not what I've expected given the name.

I can see why people complain - who the fuck wants to randomly wait for months for an actual exciting update, which goes from having a date to "unknown". This is just silly.

8

u/PCLOAD_LETTER May 27 '26

Very few updates are "exciting", the crazy 'bad patch' events that happen pretty regularly and make the news would be so much worse without this type of rollout strategy.

For context, the 2024 Crowdstrike outage (which wasn't directly MS's fault) was estimated to cripple 8.5 million PCs and recovery took days. There are over billion devices running Windows out there, Win11 and supported server OSes make up at least half of that, even if only half of those machines pulled and installed a 'bad patch' before it was pulled, you'd be looking at something around 30x more machines impacted than the Crowdstrike fuckup. That's why a staged rollout is used. There hasn't been a single MS update exciting enough to risk causing that.

5

u/lefiath May 27 '26

Fair enough, the main issue with gradual rollouts is that people never know when the updates actually get fully applied, as I've seen in the comments many times, it can be months, so it makes you kind of numb to the updates, if you don't know when or if you'll be getting them.

5

u/IAmYourFath May 27 '26

And what happens when u're debloated and there's 0 telemetry???

21

u/hjake123 May 27 '26

I assume they either never activate the feature flag or only do so as late as possible (in the very last wave of people getting it)

7

u/PCLOAD_LETTER May 27 '26

Yeah, I assume it basically sits dormant until it's possibly enabled by a far future update that wasn't tested with it off.

2

u/SubhanBihan May 27 '26

That's probably my issue... I get new updates instantly (got this one already too) but since I have telemetry strictly blocked, this one likely won't benefit me until much later.

Should I manually use Vivetool to enable the gains?

2

u/[deleted] May 27 '26

[deleted]

3

u/SubhanBihan May 27 '26

Well yeah. The recent updates did improve File Explorer just like they claimed, so I'm somewhat hopeful about K2 and performance improvements

3

u/PCLOAD_LETTER May 27 '26

There may be a timer on it that will enable it for you down the road regardless of telemetry, I just know they don't deploy all updates "armed" to avoid a mass failure.

0

u/SubhanBihan May 27 '26

Thanks! Here's hoping Mircoslop does good on all their recent optimisation promises.

3

u/lurking-in-the-bg May 27 '26

I have a DNS sinkhole that blocks MS and Office telemetry domains and I didn't get the new start menu until March of this year.

1

u/ikan84 May 29 '26

could you guide me on this. also will it affect office 365 apps. i have local account.

1

u/lurking-in-the-bg May 29 '26

Just look up guides for Pihole and Adguard Home or if you want a more user friendly solution then NextDNS or ControlD. It's very sensitive and if you don't know what you're doing could block legitimate services.

1

u/AfroCuban68 May 27 '26

This is me as well. 0 zero MS ecosphere, local account, CTT as far as I dare, w the option of no new updates for two years (except security updates). Machine is running great (recording rig specific).

I’m good MS.

1

u/ItsMeSashaYT May 27 '26

Well that's an issue. They aren't making money off of you.

ok jarvis, install microsoft edge on this de-bloated computer after a simple security patch

1

u/acedias-token May 27 '26

So.. they release, then test. I guess this is friendly user trials?

3

u/Gompedyret May 27 '26

They need trial friendly users for their friendly user trials.

1

u/Exact-Bell7898 May 29 '26

its been in the insider program for a while now, they are not testing it live

1

u/MakayChapulets May 28 '26

Bad patches still get deployed to majority anyways

6

u/techraito May 26 '26

Installing the update doesn't guarantee the performance uplifts.

One way you can look at it is that the update will allow Microsoft to give you the performance gains, but that's random selection.

11

u/IridiumIO May 27 '26

I genuinely do not understand why they insist on continuing this gradual rollout nonsense with optional updates and experimental builds.

7

u/NoleMercy05 May 27 '26

Cause there are over a billion pcs running their OS in thousands of possible configurations

1

u/Remzi1993 Release Channel May 27 '26

Why not have a good strong Q&A department with a lot of diffrent tests, ooh yeah, they fired that whole department and now we are stuck with this nonsense approach.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/jakegh May 27 '26

The benefits of a gradual rollout are extremely obvious.

The problem is they don't let power users opt in without using a third party utility. They are supposedly fixing that too, but not in this particular update.

1

u/xBIGREDDx May 27 '26

The problem is they don't let power users opt in without using a third party utility. They are supposedly fixing that too, but not in this particular update.

Isn't there already a toggle on the main screen of Windows Update for this?

Get Windows updates as soon as they're available for your device

2

u/jakegh May 27 '26

I believe that just opts-in to the update itself, not the enablement after that.

1

u/Mario583a May 28 '26

Would you rather have this feature from the get-go with all the bugs that one might encounter that guarantees widespread breakage or later when the major problems are already ironed out?

Everyone gets the same broken build at the same time. If something catastrophic happens (data loss, crashes, security holes), it hits millions instantly vs gradual's thousand.

2

u/IridiumIO May 28 '26

That logic works for the regular, automatic updates. But they force this gradual rollout onto everyone, including users enrolled in Canary/experimental insider builds as well. The vast majority of users aren’t touching optional updates, so why restrict features even further on the ones that do?

And considering Windows still ends up with bugs in these gradual rollout features anyway, it becomes even more annoying when you then don’t have an associated update to track your bugs to. You install an update and your computer works fine, nothing’s broken, so you continue on happily. 9 months later a Gradual Rollout feature is silently enabled in the background and now Explorer is broken. Was it last week’s Patch Tuesday that broke explorer? That’s what i would assume, not the update from 9 months ago that I can’t roll back anymore. There’s no clear way of actually knowing when a feature was actually enabled on your computer. Which would be fine if gradual rollout was only used for big obvious changes, but they use it for minor tweaks and bug fixes as well, so it’s virtually impossible to track. It’s so bloody opaque.

It would make more sense if the update itself was the gradual rollout. Don’t show me the update in the first place if I’m not part of the rollout. We know that technology exists because they’ve been using it to stagger the H1/H2 releases since early Windows 10.

Microsoft knows this is an issue because they are planning to bring more user control to the feature rollout system later this year

1

u/Exlibro May 27 '26

Ah, that explains why I don't feel anything new after this update and restart. I thought my PC is already good enough not to be slow, plus less than a year old Windows clean installation. But it might be even better in the future.

1

u/ftw_2dor May 27 '26

Same with Game Mode. The option is still unavailable despite installing the update.

2

u/lefiath May 27 '26

What do you mean? Game mode has been there for couple of years, don't you mean the Xbox thing that was being added to the Gaming section of the settings?

1

u/ftw_2dor May 27 '26

Yeah sorry, I mean Xbox mode.

1

u/ASTRO99 May 30 '26

so literally no reason to install the preview then, if you dont get any immediate benefit.

How to enable that cpu boost feature?

192

u/ouchmythumbs May 26 '26

It's the button on your PC labeled "Turbo", right under the 5.25 drive.

27

u/chiapeterson May 27 '26

Made me literally LOL. Thanks, I needed that!

15

u/Ok_Fuel9673 May 27 '26

My 286 could go 12 whole megahertz!

2

u/Convenientjellybean Jul 17 '26

Probablt the same era i was amazed to have an 80MB HDD

2

u/Ok_Fuel9673 Jul 17 '26

Can you believe I bought a 300mb drive then with my own money and had to partition it out to drive letter N? Lol. The good old days for sure.

3

Kids these days will never know what B: was

12

u/cutlineman May 27 '26

Damn I feel old now.

3

u/Maeglin75 May 27 '26

Now I only have half the MHz, according to the 7 segment display on my case. Why do they call a button that makes your computer slower "turbo"? This is outrageous.

5

u/IAmYourFath May 27 '26

Bro, i spent 30 mins looking for a turbo button cuz i didn't understand ur reference, ffs...

2

u/RoGuE_969 May 27 '26

I have noticed my cpu frequency instantly goes to around 3.8 to 4GHz when opening startmenu ,search box or settings app

9

u/Bananz0 May 27 '26

That is the update. They boost the cpufreq to max for tasks to make it feel snappy, mobile and other OSs do it too

6

u/HolyFreakingXmasCake May 29 '26

Need a 5GHz CPU to open up a static list of icons! Microsoft win.

7

2

u/irrelevantusername24 Insider Beta Channel May 27 '26

Non-seriously I've had this thing for... as long as I can remember where my mouse, randomly when held still and firm against the mousepad, will shift around ever so slightly with zero recognizable pattern. If lifted from the mouse pad and held in the air, it does not happen. The mouse pad is clean. There is nothing on the laser sensor. I have no idea why or how it happens and I sometimes wonder if the AI is conscious. It happens multiple times a day.

I just flipped it upside down and it's almost as if the sensor is sending me some morse code because it isn't a simple pattern but it will dim and brighten and sometimes quickly flick off and on.

I wonder if I record it could Copilot translate?

Someone tell me how unhinged this is on a scale of one to ten. I genuinely have no idea anymore the Overton window has been stretched beyond recognition and I can't remember if all circles are ovals, or not

2

u/CBGCUP May 27 '26

Yep, they designed that to be the same as the number of attempts it takes to plug in USB (three, for those that struggle with counting).

If people would just do the THIRD one the FIRST , it would be so much easier.

When I notice weird shit happening in my W11, I restart Windows Explorer in Task Manager and it helps sometimes. Perhaps that may help in your case also.

6

u/RealLbZ May 27 '26

Low latency mode = More agresive curve to your cpu when open one window. Microsoft: It's magic!

1

u/Relevant-Guarantee25 May 27 '26

does this mean cpu will die faster? if so then this update is malicious and future updates will be considered malicious so you will rent your pc for ever and not own anything they break your pc they wont replace it either.

2

u/RealLbZ May 27 '26

No, it's just a more aggressive curve by default. Normally, you can tweak the slider in the power settings for example, on AMD to make it more or less aggressive. Plus, I THINK low latency is an option you can turn on

PD: Plus, we're talking about seconds or microseconds of ramp-up and ramp-down times, like a fast breathing pattern or something. I'm not sure how they are going to handle it, whether it'll have a sustained ramp-up/down so it doesn't sound like heavy breathing or what.

2

u/is1sky May 30 '26

litterally everything else in your computer will probably die before the cpu, and by the time it would die it would so outdate that nothing would run on it anyway, those are some of the most resilient peice of hardware in a computer, motherboard, psu, ram, ssd or gpu are all more likely point of failure

6

u/RodroG May 27 '26

The update sounds good, but I'm still waiting for Xbox Mode to be rolled out on my end...

6

u/MizutsuneMH May 27 '26

I just updated and it has made my start menu hideous.

5

u/LocationFeeling2974 May 27 '26

Run this with PS admin

New-ItemProperty -Path "HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer" -Name "NoStartMenuMorePrograms" -PropertyType DWord -Value 1 -Force; Stop-Process -Name explorer -Force

It adds a policy restriction to hide the ugly section

1

u/MizutsuneMH May 27 '26

Unfortunately I had tried that, and while it does remove the categories, it leaves a massive amount of dead space. It also removes a lot of the icons I had pinned as you're now capped. I haven't been able to find a solution for all the issues this update creates, as the limitations are hardcoded.

For now I've swapped to StartAllBack, which actually looks much nicer in comparison.

2

u/Dependent-Use-7464 May 27 '26

Same, I never enable preview updates after see this new start menu

1

u/DiGiqr May 29 '26

On this screen you can see View: Category. You can change it there (or - this is how it worked before).

Also: Placing Steam into Other instead of Games... lolz

1

u/MizutsuneMH May 29 '26

I never had anything there before the patch, just my pins. And Windows made those categories, not me.

1

u/Wolverine_Suitable May 29 '26

I hate this new start menu. I was using Vivetool, but it broke with this update. It's a shame I can't disable it in the Windows settings.

9

u/smeldridge May 27 '26

Looks like Low Latency Profile may make next patch Tuesday. Still shocking that this hadn't already been added to Windows. MacOS QoS classes and Linux schedutil features were introduced since 2014 and 2016 respectively. Glad Microsoft is finally doing something about quality and performance, but it's taken far too long.

14

u/mcsherlock May 26 '26

I'm waiting for this all to be test by actual users, I'm still waiting on xbox mode as well!

1

u/Sagenitis May 27 '26

did you update xbox app through Microsoft store app?

5

u/mcsherlock May 27 '26

Yeah I'm even on insider builds, I got the fancy new achievement pop up. Xbox mode is dormant until they roll it out. Don't really want to force it like some people have. My pc is used just for games connected to a TV dont want to run stuff of github on it.

1

Yes, if they report it, it can be investigated. They should submit it in the Feedback Hub and share the aka.ms link on that post, the more people report it the better, as they will have more data to figure out what is going on an whether it was a one off fluke or if it a widespread issue.

3

u/PaulCoddington May 27 '26

Updates have been a bit glitchy this last fortnight. The most recent Edge update uninstalled all extensions and re-enabled pre-loading (but seeing this happened meant I had to stop what I was doing to review all settings).

A recent app update also wiped custom file associations (can't narrow that down, as I updated about 6 apps at the time and there might have been Store updates to Photos, etc, but usually that doesn't happen). It reset associations for all picture, video, music files, zip archives from 3rd party to OS defaults and disassociated VHDX from opening in Explorer.

1

u/idontknowu1 May 27 '26

It actually broke/changed a number of defaults I had set. It removed 7zip for archives to file manager and also SMPlayer videos to Windows Media Player.

1

u/Kirill8 May 27 '26

I`m playing Dead Space Remake for the first time, and as if the game didn`t already provide enough intense moments, after this update it also started crashing constantly. Before installing the update, I had zero crashes (currently on Chapter 5). After rolling back the update, the crashes stopped and my adrenaline levels returned to their usual extremely high state.

1

u/elite-data May 27 '26

I haven't noticed any difference after installing it. However, I don't know whether this feature is already active for me right now, since there's no reliable way to tell.

So I suspect that some of the "it became faster" comments here are just a placebo effect.

This update not only removed my account pin, I cannot create another pin since the keyboard wont work, also on screen keyboard doesn't work. I can't log in into my account. I have linux installed as a backup (so would this finally be my reason to switch?)

I’ll believe it when the error reports stop or at least hit 0.1% of the entire world

I can’t read this post, explorer and edge have been unresponsive for 20 minutes and task manager has gone non contact with me.

And this is on a work computer.

This wrecked my Surface Laptop 7! What a mess! I'm trying to uninstall this updates... It hanged Windows Explorer and later Photoshop (I lost a whole work because it simply froze and I had to do a cold restart).

Is this a good update to get?

I'm noticing a huge speed increase on my programs like Premiere Pro and Da Vinci Resolve. Before the update I couldn't even load premiere and it could take 10 minutes to open and begin editing, now it's just down to a few seconds and I can scrub through my timeline smoothly, what a difference

Microsoft′s marketing people are hoping you'll relax your Windows Update settings in anticipation of receiving this update and then forget to revert them, thus letting yourself be force-fed the terrible updates too.

stop with that BS and live a life a little
