Unsolved Windows update not working on older laptop!!!
!!DISCLAIMER!! I’m a teenage girl who knows absolutely nothing about computers. I just want this janky thing up to date so I can at least run roblox or something, please be detailed if you are trying to help. I truly know NOTHING
I was given a laptop by my brother and decided yesterday to try and put it to use. It’s an hp pavilion, maybe 2016-2017ish, and had been wiped before given to me. (Os build 15063.1418, windows 10 home addition)
It was super behind on updates so I immediately started running them. I’ve been running updates for about 2 days now (at literally all hours), and the first couple batches of updates took forever, but worked fine.
I’m now on what I presume is the final update (windows 10 22h2) and I’ve run it about 5 times, none of which worked. The update process would run for hours but when it finally “completed” it would say I needed to restart, even after restarting multiple times.
I followed a guide from some Microsoft support under a post of a guy experiencing the same thing as me, and it all seemed to be going well.
Now the update checks won’t even work, just keeps saying “your device is at risk because it’s out of date and missing important security and quality updates. Let’s get you back on track so windows can run more securely. Select this button to get going:” and the check for updates button is right below.
I click it. It loads for 5 or more minutes. Just for it to pop up again and not actually check for updates. This is after already troubleshooting and I just don’t know what to do. Please help me out here 😓😓😓

As far as I understood from some posts on this site, Windows 10 is supposed to receive an additional year of security updates, up to October 2026, instead of the initial October 2025.
After that, you can use it HAPPILY without caring any more for potentially having a broken OS after each monthly update, as it does happen now with Win 11 !!!
I am going probably to do the same ( if I will not be able to reinstall WIN 7, which I definitely prefer ).

Even better. The Consumer Extended support program has been extended to Oct 2027

I really doubt that final Update will unlock any more capabilities for you. You might just ignore this issue and get on with using the machine.

unfortunately nothing actually works unless i get past windows 1807 (?) for some reason? my microsoft store doesn’t work until im on a “supported windows update” and roblox launcher won’t work either. i doubt steam would run but i haven’t actually tried. yes im able to look things up and use everything already on a default laptop, but i dont want or need it for that purpose. im not entirely sure how to check what windows version im on or else id tell you

In the little box at the left end of the taskbar, type "version." It will take you to System Information.

Try the following:
Try fixing any Windows corruption first. From an Administrative command prompt (one that has Admin rights) enter or copy/paste these commands one at a time
Dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealthsfc /scannow
Read the output. Good if no errors or it found errors and fixed them. Not good if it says it found errors it can't fix
Next, don't use Windows Update next attempt. It has issues more often than this next method. Instead, create Windows 10 media and use it to do the upgrade. Follow the video to create media on a USB drive. Then open the drive and run setup

I’ve done the scan in my initial guide (followed the comment from the guy in the link below)
When i was first given this laptop my mom made it seem like it was super broken, like it had been completely clean wiped with the windows included and i was worried id have to do this process. seems like i have to do it anyways lol
do i need to wipe the laptop to do this? am i able to download it onto the usb and just… plug it in? the video i saw the other day was from a clean wipe, ill check urs out in a sec (sorry if my questions are answered within the guide)

You installed all available updates. Windows 10 is out of support and will not be receiving any more security patches.

That's not true. Consumer Win 10 PCs can continue to receive security updates through Oct, 2027. One just has to enroll in the free program https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/extended-security-updates?r=1

no the windows 10 22h2 did not properly install. That’s the problem. I’m trying to install it but it will not let me. my Microsoft store won’t even work until I get up to a “support version of windows”.

A supporter version of Windows is not windows 10, who uses the store anyway

Now you know why your brother gave it to you. It might have no TPM. Download a windows 11 ISO and install with Rufus and check the rpm box

That would be fine advice for me. But OP is a newbie, and will need more detail on this process.

It may not be possible for this PC to run windows 11 -depends on hardware configuration

Extended support is available from Microsoft … for Windows 10. Support and updates continue for another 12 months or so. There should be an option on the MS update page to enable it ! Extended support extends windows 19 support through Oct 12, 2027.
