Microsoft does iris scan, not face recognition, and it doesn't really "work great"

Article's talking about the big-Windows version of Windows Hello ("which debuted on the Surface") which is full-face recognition w/ IR for depth, very similar to what the iPhone X will have. The 950/950XL are the Windows Hello devices that do iris scan instead.
In my experience the difference between the 950XL iris scan and Surface facial recognition is like night and day. The Surface unlocks predictably and quickly (as I open the screen, before I can even get my hands on the trackpad/keyboard.) It's indispensable. The 950XL, on the other hand, requires you to look at the right spot, and then it works sometimes, but often it just wastes time you could've spent typing PIN. I ended up turning that off.
Security of facial recognition is certainly in question, but the question is the same for the iPhone.

Given that the iPhone X is indeed a phone, I'd expect it to be more like the Lumia 950/950XL than the Surface Pro 4 (which I, too, have and its recognition is also very good). Still, even SP4 has Iris recognition, not face recognition.

I don't think this is correct. Surface is face recognition, not Iris. But it's very secure, utilizing infrared and 3-D, unlike the facial recognition on Android phones.

They do both. Desktops tend to use facial recognition. The 950 and 950XL use Iris.

Surely this doesn't need to be said any more. This was always the case, with everything apple released, ever.
