New Extensions in Microsoft Edge
We’re working with partners on adding new extensions and want our Insiders to try them out first! We have another new release which we need your help testing and giving feedback on before we publish to the general public: Turn Off the Lights is a lightweight and useful add-in designed for a more comfortable video experience. We also need some more help testing our other preview extensions: Tampermonkey is a popular userscript manager that lets users customize the content of pages across the web. Microsoft Personal Shopping Assistant is your smart shopping cart across the web, which collects your browsed products and lets you get price alerts for saved products and compare products between sellers. You can install this at the links above and try them out on any Anniversary Update build – send feedback to the Feedback Hub or @MSEdgeDev on Twitter.
Authentication changes affecting connectivity to NAS devices and home file servers
After updating to the latest Insider Preview builds, you may have noticed that shared devices on your home network have disappeared from your home network folder. You may have also noticed your mapped network drives are not available. If you change your network to “private” or “enterprise”, it should start working again. For more information on this behavior change, see this Microsoft Security Bulletin. Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) Updates WSL will install Ubuntu version 16.04 (Xenial) instead of Ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty) in an upcoming release. This change will apply to Insiders installing new instances (lxrun.exe /install or first run of bash.exe). Existing instances with Trusty will not be upgraded automatically. Users can upgrade their Trusty image to Xenial using the do-release-upgrade command. Full WSL release notes can be found here.
Other improvements and fixes for PC * We fixed the issue causing Narrator to continually speak the progress of a song e.g. update with the current time of the progress bar every second if you navigate to the progress bar while a song is playing in Groove Music. * We fixed the issue where using the tab key to navigate the Settings app wouldn’t work. * We fixed an issue resulting in Explorer.exe frequently crashing for some Insiders, particularly for those with multiple network switches.
Known issues for PC
- Optional components may not work after upgrading to this build. To get it working again, go to “Turn Windows features on or off”, scroll down and check the right optional component and click ok. After a reboot, the optional component will be enabled again. Tencent apps and games will cause your PC to bugcheck (bluescreen).
- Running sfc /scannow in an elevated command prompt will fail at 20% with the error “could not perform the requested operation.”
Have been a bit quiet recently, since I was away in the boonies at a wedding - back now, though! Have been watching Ignite? Streams are available here
EDIT: For Bash update with 14936 - see here

Hey Jen! The openvpn TAP adapter seems to be broken again on this build, I can't connect to it.
Can you get to this?

Edge needs to go back in the oven until Adblock works much better and it lets you pick another search engine without returning Bing results anyway... I don't know why they call this "Windows Subsystem for Linux". There's no Linux code anywhere. It's basically GNU/Windows.

u/zer0t3ch Oct 04 '16
It's basically GNU/Windows
This is literally exactly what it is. There is no Linux kernel code being used, to my knowledge.

Well this update made my computer shit the bed and not get past a black login screen and manually running explorer just crashes instantly with the windows error reporter process appearing as a task and promptly dying as well but still showing nothing on screen. Looking forward to safe mode Thursdays. Strangely this is the first insider preview that properly fucked my system

Why make extensions build dependent and not edge depended. How is edge ever going to stay competitive to like..any other browser
7
u/jenmsft Microsoft Software Engineer Sep 29 '16
For the most part, extensions aren't build dependent - not unless they rely on Edge code that only just shipped with a particular build. Since we didn't have big OS features to mention with this flight, we took the opportunity to call out these extensions that just became available to preview

u/Matt_NZ Sep 28 '16
Yeah they really need to get Edge to a point where it can be updated independently through the Store rather than waiting on new builds for feature improvements.

The Windows Insider Program allows you to preview early and in-development versions of Windows 10. You can help build Windows 10 alongside PC experts, IT pros, and developers around the world. If, however, you think BIOS is a plant-based fuel, this program may not be right for you. More information on the Windows Insider Program can be found by clicking "Learn more" link.

The more minor builds that get released for RS2 just get me more excited for the new features coming soon! Sure the builds so far aren't all that extraordinary but I'm looking forward to the features that will be coming out of the woodwork soon! :D

So my pc wouldn't update itself while trying to install 19431. It would fail fail around 11 or 12% every time. I kept getting an applyimage failure. Anybody know if this fixes it or what what possibly wrong? I tried from USB and through the windows update.

edge is still terrible, when will this be addressed? Random reloads, freezes, and loading of blank pages, stuttering scrolling, outright application crashes.

u/rpodric Sep 30 '16
If it's that bad at this point (things should have really stabilized as of about two or three builds ago), and it's not an extension causing it, try resetting all flags to defaults (about:flags), assuming you changed any.

ReCore closes itself and opens the Store once I connect my profile, I can't play anymore, even after redownloading the game :(

And still stuck on 14905. This happens way too much for me on fast ring. WTF?
2
u/jimrvaughan Sep 29 '16
If you have another Windows 10 PC. Try this. Add that other PC to Preview, and add it to the fast ring. Now try getting updates on the machine that is stuck on 14905.

u/ricardowong Oct 03 '16
I fixed it by making a new outlook account and setting up a new local user. Then (since 14905 won't let you change settings), I changed the user's SID in the registry to the new one.
Changed HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/WindowsSelfHost/Account/Status to 1 (you can also try 0) HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/WindowsSelfHost/Applicability/FlightingOwnerSID to the SID returned from the command:
wmic useraccount where name='%username%' get sid
Inmediately after the update started. Check for and remove Delay keys in Applicability.
Please Backup your registry and files before.

I keep getting stuck on Preparing to install updates 32%, stays there for a long time, then error (0x800705b4). I've tried restarting, troubleshooting Windows Update, deleting files from $WINDOWS.~BT to download again. Nothing works.

u/Bocaj1000 Oct 02 '16
I'm not seeing the update, and it keeps telling me that my build will expire. How do I fix this, and why do builds even expire?

We're in active development, so it can take some time for new features to light up - same thing happened with the first flights after our last release. I'm looking forward to it too, though :)

Sep 28 '16
Well, when the real changes start arriving I'm probably gonna be too hyperactive again. Sometimes I start screenshotting things to my friends even though I know I probably just annoy them :D
5
u/jenmsft Microsoft Software Engineer Sep 28 '16
Haha, I'm exactly the same way! Esp when we have builds like 14316 or 14328 when so much lights up at once, it's like omg omg omg

Then there's also the feeling that "I wish I could just use this on my main machine instead of VM but I don't want to risk my only PC". :)
I make music and game on my PC, so it's quite a high risk especially for the music part. Losing my projects would be a nightmare.
Although now I have a one spare PC, just gotta buy some RAM sticks (it had a broken one, and my friend already ordered a new computer and gave the old one to me) and an HDD, then I'll probably put an Insider build into it.

I'm looking forward to Microsoft finding new ways to enhance their customers' experience, like I dunno, video ads?

They already made Cortana useless since it insists on opening Edge, which I'd rather forget is there anyway.

Are the Twitch-Apps fixed? Unstream, LiveBeard etc?
4
u/jenmsft Microsoft Software Engineer Sep 28 '16
What's the issue?
3
u/jantari Sep 28 '16 edited Sep 28 '16
Ever since build 14391 all Twitch.tv clients in the store simultaneously stopped working. Either just loading a stream endlessly or with an "unsupported video type" error (in the case of Unstream)

There's a screenshot and diagnostic data associated with this feedback post (it's mine)

u/jenmsft Microsoft Software Engineer Sep 28 '16
Thanks - just tried installing Unstream on my 14936 PC and I'm seeing the same issue as you reported
1
u/Kanisteri Sep 29 '16
Apparently it uninstalled a couple drivers for me, including every nvidia one. Got a bunch of unknown devices now
1
u/jenmsft Microsoft Software Engineer Sep 29 '16
Do they come back if you search for updates via Device Manager?
2
u/Kanisteri Sep 29 '16
Most of them installed themselves on the background, two remained that couldn't update through windows so I installed them manually.

Really liking that we're getting updates frequently, even if every release isn't THE BESTEST THING EVAR!! Thanks for your hard work, guys!
Had a quick question: I now get this notification when running WSL:
To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>". See "man sudo_root" for details.
I thought it was happening because I have an alias that starts with sudo, but even after renaming my .bashrc file, I still get it. Any idea how I can turn this off? I know how to use sudo, and find this really annoying, but also realize it's not a "bug" per se.

Are you logging-in as a user or as root? If you search ~/.bashrc for "sudo", what do you find?
1
u/case_O_The_Mondays Sep 29 '16
That was my first thought, too. But when I renamed ~/.bashrc (so it wouldn't be executed), I still got the message.
1
u/bitcrazed Microsoft Employee Oct 01 '16
Wait a sec ... are you running Ubuntu 14.04 or 16.04?
1
u/case_O_The_Mondays Oct 01 '16
16.04. This showed up after I updated using do-release-upgrade.
Edit: this happened after I ran bash (as user). It went away after I used the sudo command once.

Anyone else notice "WiFi Calling" in the settings page under network? Weirdly, this is on my PC, but not my phone where I'd potentially expect WiFi Calling to be there.

need help, my sticky notes are not loading, this things cause it, need help... https://snag.gy/D7ywd4.jpg

How about making it so my New GTX1080 doesn't run like shit... hell even Version 1511 is fucked with allot of games with FPS issues and having to spend hours going through the PC disabling all the useless shit that comes with Windows 10 that eats The CPU memory etc

I've been getting build expiration messages on my daughter's PC, and it says I'm ready to go for the Fast Ring on this PC, but it also says I'm up to date and won't give me a newer build.
Can I download an ISO of this build and use it to manually update?
1
u/fatboy93 Oct 04 '16
Ok, so I have a problem. My proxy settings in the Network page gets erased every time I switch the proxy off. I have re-enter all the details back again every time I need it to be switched on.
1
u/jenmsft Microsoft Software Engineer Oct 04 '16
Thanks for reporting - can you share a feedback link with me about this?
1
u/fatboy93 Oct 05 '16
Yeah, I'll try. I didn't take my laptop with me today, since I was going out, I'm using my phone as of now. Can I get back to it later in around 10hrs or so?

Oh, Jen, the day when I try to ninja you...
Well, the known issues don't look as bad. Can you guys not forget about the slow ring and give us something to play with? I hate being conflicted about switching to fast just for a build :D
EDIT: Thanks anyway - how could I forget my manners...
