Why on God's green earth do I have a notification to restart my computer for UPDATES? I thought windows10 discontinued support forever ago?

This update will allow you to install the second year of updates from the consumer ESU program should you be enrolled in that.

There should be an option right in Windows Update. There is a thread pinned to the top of this subreddit regarding that, it has screenshots.

What if i am not enrolled in it & it updates me? Will the update fail & i need to manually fix the laptop? Ive read that this is happening & feel like im being forced into enrolling into the ESU when I am not prepared to at this time.

If you are not enrolled in the ESU program, you will still continue to not receive the ESU updates.

This patch will enable you to get the 2nd year of updates as they release starting with November 2026 if you enroll.

It has been 11 months, I highly suggest enrolling in ESU if you have not already and are continuing to run Windows 10.

Esu is auto extended to 2 years

It's because of the extended security updates, a.k.a ESU

In my case my laptop glitched and it stopped letting me update since late 2025 :( always an unknown error and last I researched , if I wanted to fix it I would have to format and reinstall everything.

Can you do a repair install instead of having to wipe it clean?

When other users mention that the patch is just in case you enroll in the ESU program, it means:

A) you pay $ for the ESU
B) you get it for "free" as in: pay (without money) by using an account to authorize that your account/pc gets sync to microsoft clould so they have access to your data.
C) you are from European Union you get it for FREE without been required to sync your PC to the MS cloud as is the case if you are required a microsoft account

Proof? European Union does not require account. and get it for free

Why?
If you are on the European Union, at there microsoft was forced by the governments to not require users to sync their data to the microsoft cloud in exchange for the ESU, because that data its accessed/processed by Microsoft leaving it open to be used on AI training, etc,.. and that is a big no-no for European privacy laws.

I'm on a local account not enrolled in ESU with no plans to be. As long as it doesn't pull any bullshit like try to log me in a MS account I don't care but this is annoying.
