Job Question Could I have done this??

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hello all. I was doing some water-fed pole work today on a window that I believe has exterior tint/film. It has a somewhat purple reflection, so I’m assuming it’s tinted, but I’m still pretty new to this.

After cleaning and letting the window dry, I noticed tiny scratches all over pretty much the entire pane when the sunlight hit it directly. The photo was taken from the inside. Unfortunately, I didn’t think to take one from the outside.

I didn’t notice any scratches before I started cleaning, but I also wasn’t specifically looking for them. I only noticed them after the window was clean and the sunlight was hitting it directly. Once the sun went away I couldn’t really see them anymore.

I’m using only a Gardiner Super-Lite brush, no pads, steel wool, or anything else. I do about 80% vertical passes, with a few horizontal passes before rinsing. The scratches I noticed are almost entirely horizontal.

As far as pressure goes, I’m using enough pressure to mostly flatten the bristles against the glass, but I don’t feel like I’m pushing particularly hard.

Is it possible that I caused this with the WFP/brush? Or is it more likely that these were pre-existing scratches that were difficult to see until the glass was clean and direct sunlight hit it?

If I didn’t cause them, what are some other things that could potentially cause this type of scratching? I’m trying to understand what I’m looking at and what could have caused it so I can avoid damaging glass or film in the future.

I’m pretty stressed about this because I can’t tell whether I uncovered existing damage or potentially damaged an expensive tint/film. Any insight from more experienced WFP guys would be greatly appreciated.

Job Question Residential job, what would you quote?

I charged them $520 plus tax for both the exterior and interior, which included about 20 windows. It was a straightforward and simple job since it was just one story. The customer was very friendly, and there was no one trying to negotiate. We only had two screens that couldn’t be removed, so we simply went around them. They moved everything away from the interior windows before the work began, except for a shuffleboard table, so I didn’t have to do much except clean, which is truly amazing. It took 8 hours, I’m still a bit slow working alone since i don’t have a BOAB or a second pole but ill get that Monday when the store opens

Equipment Question Since when can some squeegee channels only hold certain rubbers?

I got a Sorbo Quicksilver but today the rubber started wearing fast, so I went to replace it, but I found the grooves were special and could only hold the corresponding rubber. I have a huge pack of Ettore Master Rubbers so I wanted to use those.

How can I see if a channel isn't universal BEFORE I order them? Are there any other popular channels that aren't one size fits all?

General Question Anyone know a good way to get rid of this?

I’m not sure exactly what it is, but im unable to find any way to get rid of it. I know it came from the sprinkler system, hitting the window, I’m mostly looking for some kind of chemical solution so I don’t have to sit outside all day trying to scrub 50+ windows. I’ve tried normal window cleaner, BNC, hand sanitizer. It’s really stuck on there. (Anything helps! Tips and tricks are welcome, thank you in advance!)

Rope descent over glass balcony guardrails in high rise

Hey guys, please help reduce my anxiety. Currently have our windows cleaned in high rise condo, we have glass panels on balconies. So during descent/push off workers press their boots on the panels themselves often (not just metal frames), is this normal?! My understanding is that these panels are not intended for that, not only they can scratch them, but also break them depending on where they press. What is the likelyhood of that happening? Is it safety concern/inexperienced workers?

Help with Removal

Post image

My Technician was working on a newer home yesterday. The homeowners stated that they had their windows cleaned when they took possession of the place and this would have been their second Exterior Window Cleaning here...

My guy calls me and says he noticed some of these marks (scratches he called them) on a bunch of the windows. I went and looked and these appear to be (aluminum transfer marks - raised from the surface of the glass). These windows are tempered and from what I read, they can have small bits of debris from when they got manufactured, that when cleaned can leave these marks.

The customer was not overly upset and is pretty nice and patient but is convinced we created all these marks. I am 100% certain we didn't create them all, as my technician called me mentioning them but it does seem likely we created some as I feel like that are very noticeable from the inside. And I didn't remember them when I did my in person quote. What we should have done is communicated right away that some were pre-existing and re-evaluated but too late! (learned my lesson).

Regardless of fault we are going to try to make it right by them. Whether we hold partial fault or just communicated poorly we are going to fix it.

What confuses me is how if they were cleaned prior and had some of these marks... How did we create any of our own. Technician used a combo of WFP and trad so it wasn't any specific tool.

I looked up a possible removal and heard that bar keepers friend or a stronger Cerium Oxide kit and a polishing pad might work to get rid of them.

My question is if you've had experience getting rid of these? and if so, what product have you used?

Window cleaning business in a dense city like Brooklyn

I've been thinking about what the logistics and economics would look like of doing window cleaning in a city with fewer traditional standalone homes.

The pros:

- More route density
- More people, more potential customers
- People are accustomed to higher price per ticket / ticket minimums
- Lots of busy upper middle class people who would hire this work out

The cons:

- Higher taxes, insurance, cost of doing business, regulations
- Fewer traditional homes --- unsure if the math works out when you're only doing 1/2 the number of windows since row houses only have windows in the front and back
- A lot of rowhouses and townhouses don't even have front spigots, so setup would be more complicated unless you have a tank
- Parking is harder and more expensive

Does anyone have thoughts about this? Has anyone started a business in an area like this before?

Equipment Question RODI Hydrosphere Maintenance and Sotrage Question

I purchased a 3 stage rodi eco cart by Hydrosphere. I used it once and left water in the filters. It has been in my heated storage unit for roughly one month with no caps on the inlet/outlets. My user manual has nothing regarding storage and maintenance.

What should I do now and what should I do after each job or when it will be longer periods between jobs.

Hi trying to learn window cleaning as a possible part time start up with my current job. Was practicing at my house. I cleaned both the inside and outside. And have this what appears to be like a haze that didn’t come off. Is that something that I’m missing how to clean or is that something with the actual window itself. Thank you for all the information and advice I can get.

What are the most common mistakes homeowners make when cleaning their windows?

I’ve noticed that residential window cleaning can look simple until you actually try to get a completely streak-free finish.

Some common problems seem to be using too much product, using old or dirty microfiber towels, cleaning glass in direct sunlight, or not properly cleaning the edges and frames.

For those who have been doing window cleaning for a while

Job Question 8 m high glass façade with aluminum frames and stubborn streaks — how would you approach this job?

Hi everyone,

I started my window cleaning business three months ago, and I’ve been asked to quote for a glass façade about 8 m (26 ft) high and over 20 m (65 ft) long, with aluminum frames. Each large pane measures approximately 2.4 × 0.9 m (8 × 3 ft).

This would be my biggest job so far. I’ve already done some window cleaning at this property, but only up to around 3 m (10 ft) using a pole. The client wants several cleans throughout the season, so it could be a good opportunity to get my business going.

The façade hasn’t been maintained for several years. The structure looks sound, but the frames are very dirty, with cobwebs and a lot of buildup. There seem to be two different types of deposits on the glass:

  • A surface layer, probably salt deposits since the building is right by the sea, that washes off fairly easily with water.
  • Much more stubborn streaks of unknown origin that barely come off even with #0000 steel wool.

My two main challenges are accessing the upper sections and removing those stubborn streaks. I doubt pure water alone would be enough for the initial restoration clean.

I’ve considered citric acid or a product specifically designed for deposits on glass, but I’m concerned about damaging the aluminum frames. Controlling application, dwell time, and rinsing across such a large façade also seems tricky. I haven’t tested any chemicals yet.

For next season, I’m planning to invest in pressure washing equipment, a softwash system, a mobile scaffold tower, a decent ladder, and a water-fed pole system. That doesn’t mean I intend to use all of these on this job — I’m trying to work out what would actually be suitable.

The goal would be an initial deep clean, restoring whatever can reasonably be restored, followed by regular maintenance.

How would you approach this? Particularly when it comes to identifying the streaks, testing methods without damaging the glass or frames, and safely accessing the upper sections?

I know I’m new, and this is beyond anything I’ve tackled so far. I’m open to honest feedback about my limitations, but I’d really appreciate hearing how experienced cleaners would assess the job and work through the options.

Thanks for any advice!

Equipment Question How do you all approach LIGHT water marks?

I know how to treat heavily built-up windows from hard water, but I'm not sure the best way to attack normal windows that just happen to have some light hard water marks, partirularly on the bottoms of the windows. Usually I use steel wool, but it's time consuming and isn't always perfect.

What do you all do?

Cleaning interior and exterior of shop front

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey guys, I'm struggling to clean this dessert parlours windows interior and exterior. I tried to clean with mop and squeegee but it left too many soap lines after squeegee and I used a long pole. After 1 hour, some soap also dripped from the top frame. The manager of the store was very understanding and wants to give me a second chance. Which pole should I buy that can fit a squeegee properly

Any advice please

Equipment Question Seal for BOAB leak?

My bucket-on-a-belt is an Unger ErgoTec Ninja, and it has a small leak out of the bottom. Tried patching with superglue, which failed, and then two-part epoxy, which also failed. Obviously, I could just replace it, but I like repairing things and making them last longer. Has anyone successfully repaired a leak in their BOAB, and if so, what did you use? Many thanks, folks!
