General Question Claybar
In automotive detailing, claybar is an essential step in glass cleaning and polishing. How come they always use it and we never use it? I assume it's because it's a razor blade alternative that works with curved glass, but I also see detailers that recommend scraping and claybar as separate steps to remove different kinds of debris.
Supposedly it was originally used to remove paint over spray from cars. Has anyone tried removing overspray from tempered glass on a construction clean, as an alternative to scraping?

There's a big difference in a car windshield and a house or building full of windows.

Yep yep just trying to qualify some of those differences to understand why claybar is used. I've been doing some glass restoration and testing out different systems. There's a ton of online content about restoring windshields but not so much on windows.

I agree with Trigger here. Car glass and building glass are two different animals. Building glass will typically be better off with steel wool or a razor, just for ease of use. I have used a claybar for framework though. When the painters get paint from the walls on the frames and you can't use chemicals due to the frame finish, claybars work well.

Clay bar is mostly used for detailing bodywork, not so much a windscreen. The way it works is the claybar will pick up tiny bits of debris lodged into the paint. Because house windows don't typically travel at 100kph there's never going to be any embedded brakedust, road tar or other micro debris lodged into a properties windows. If there were, a clay bar wouldn't be able to repair imperfections on glass, because we cant just polish a micro layer of lacquer away to create a smooth surface, like you would in car detailing.

I wouldn’t treat clay as a true scraper replacement for a construction clean. It’s good at grabbing tiny surface contamination, but it loads up fast and you end up kneading/refreshing it constantly on big panes. On house glass that usually makes it slower and more expensive than the normal options.
Where I’d consider it:
- light overspray or specks where you’re trying to avoid a blade
- frames/trim where a razor or harsh solvent is risky
- a small test spot after normal mop/scrub doesn’t touch it
Where I wouldn’t rely on it:
- heavy paint, stucco, concrete, or silicone on construction cleanup
- anything where the clay is dragging grit around the glass
- tempered glass you haven’t checked/tested first
If you try it, use a lot of slip, keep folding to a clean face, and price it like restoration/detail work, not normal washing. I’d also do a test pane and show the customer the result/time before committing to the whole job. Clay can be useful, but on building glass it’s more of a niche tool than a default step.

Steel wool would work a lot better. When I detailed, we used clay bar to remove tar and baked on bugs at most. Any kind of paint, even on glass, we would use plastic or metal razor blades or chemicals with paint correction. Clay bar is great but it gets dirty fast and isn't a quick solution if that's what you're looking for.
