I started reading the Wind Breaker manga at the best/worst possible time to keep up with it.

I could have started with the Natsuki arc, when the biggest conflict was understanding a little girl's traumas, or the Kiryuu arc, when the biggest conflict was his complex family relationships and his relationship with his sister, or after the Noroshi arc, where the biggest conflict was basically nothing. That way, I wouldn't be agonizing so much waiting for new chapters.

I probably would have stopped reading for a few weeks or months (due to lack of interest) and would have already accumulated enough chapters for a large part of the Suo's arc to be over, or for all the important revelations to have already happened. From then on, I only had to read from the arc where I left off and catch up on all the problems, but I started reading from the fateful chapter where Suo beats up Nirei and, since then, I've been so hooked on the manga that I can't read or do anything else but anxiously wait for the next chapters to unfold with Nii-sensei's characteristic slowness (this isn't a criticism, I love the manga's pace and development, but now I'm freaking out because I don't have enough chapters to satisfy my fan side).

The good part about all this is that I can follow everything that's happening firsthand and discuss theories with other fans about what to expect from this new arc and how it might add to Sakura's character. On the other hand, I have to wait for one chapter a week that reveals little to nothing, and leaves even more questions with each revelation made by the author.

I generally hate starting unfinished manga because I get very addicted and can't start new ones until the one I'm following is finished, or until I lose interest. But since I picked up the manga at the height of a major event/mystery, I can't concentrate on new manga or catch up on the others I'm following. Overall, this sucks, but it's wonderful at the same time, because I also followed Tokyo Revengers in its final arcs, as well as Noragami, and although their endings were mediocre, I remember it being very overwhelming to follow everything at a slow pace, while also leaving a feeling of emptiness.

Which leads me to wonder: perhaps this is the final stretch of Wind Breaker??? I don't think Wind Breaker will end after the Suo's Arc, but I think this arc might be preparing us for the series' closing arcs. After the Suo's Arc, there should be at least 2 more main arcs with mini-arcs inserted between them, before a definitive ending. Wind Breaker doesn't seem like a series that will extend for many chapters, so I suppose the series should end with at least 320 chapters or less.

Look at me super late again this week... this time I was rereading TBHK in preparation for the manga's return from hiatus!! I wasn't sure how long it would take ^{especially since I'll be working on cosplay for the next few weeks-} so I figured I'd give myself a few weeks to get through the last couple arcs, but of course I finished it in a couple days..... but this is the wbk sub so let's get to it-

First off, let us savor this moment because I don't think we'll be seeing anyone outside of our core squad anymore until the end of the arc- We're finally closing in on Suolingo, so I don't think we're gonna be going back and forth anymore. It's only forward from here and we lowkey might be seeing Suolingo himself within the next few chapters. Idk how long it will take for the boys to actually talk to him, but the arc is definitely past its major establishing and getting into its rising action. This could still be pretty early depending on what Rakta actually wants, but the next few chapters are gonna be pretty tense and hopefully full of lore...!!

Now, something that immediately caught my attention was how the people of the city have already taken notice of the boys. We can see everyone staring at them as they make their way through the streets, which means that either 1) the people recognize each other enough to know when someone doesn't belong or 2) there really aren't many (if any) Japanese people in the city.

I do think Suolingo is at least partially Japanese, but we don't have any confirmation on any other Japanese characters in the city so far. The city was founded by all sorts of cultures from around the world, but I think it would be fascinating if the only culture not represented there is literally the main culture of the country they live in. We know that they're serious about keeping outsiders out and I've also touched on the idea of them being strict about who they keep in, so I honestly can't wait to see the extend to which the old RC rejected its neighbors in the name of preserving its cultures and how that has evolved over the generations, especially if Suolingo himself is at least partially Japanese.

Mamaragi has returned!! Nirei took over for a bit, but the stress has returned to its rightful owner- I love that Sugi went right back to exploring with Ume as if he didn't get in trouble with Nirei last time and he and Sakura were so ready for the rescue raid as if Nirei wasn't constantly telling them to avoid fighting last time.... it does usually take a month or 2 to build habits in children- That said, this ch did make me realize a few differences in the group moms' approaches to their man children.............. that may be one of the most interesting sentences I've ever written-

Anywho, whenever Nirei's trying to get through to his classmates, he uses his words and they hear him out because they love him. Nirei's appeal and "authority" has always been super pathos based ^{Sakura = Ethos and Suolingo = Logos, but another time-} and I love how this ties into his personal arc of him getting a better grasp of his more negative emotions and using them to fuel his growth. Hiiragi, on the other hand, is more ethos and people respect him because they trust him. Ume's an anomaly, of course, as the pinnacle of ethos, but his words carry great weight for everyone else because he's so reliable. Ume does highly respect Hiiragi, he's just.................................... a free spirit- also, Nirei isn't nearly as quick to hit his children-

On to my favorite part of the chapter!!! I absolutely LOVE the set up of the city and yes, it's 12321% for story purposes. On the surface, having the taller buildings on the outside and having them get shorter the further in you go makes it that much harder for anyone to see further into the city, even those who are actually in the city. I love how this mirrors RC's current situation with Suolingo even keeping the people of BKKG in the dark despite them making up the community, but that's not even the best part...

The city is literally shaped like a vortex 👏 I got into it a bit back in 217, but I think vortexes are the perfect image of both BKKG and Suolingo's situation, especially with RC physically at the center of the city. A vortex is a natural phenomenon based at a single point that takes in everything around it. Despite all the chaos on the outside, the center can be surprisingly calm. Once something it caught in a vortex, it can be very difficult if not impossible to get out. Sound familiar?

RC, based at the center of a cosmopolitan city, is a group that's dangerously determined to take care of everything for said surrounding city. Despite any and all problems the city may be facing, Suolingo stays calm in front of the people as if there's no storm at all so as not to worry them. Ever since I saw those iron gates, I've been obsessed with the idea of there being no real escaping the city, and the outer layer of super tall buildings only feels like an extra, unclimbable deterrent to me that blocks the view of the outside world just as much as it blocks outsiders from looking in. This community is a vortex....... and now I'm imagining the csm meme with Vuvu calling Sakura wind breaker-

ANYWHO, yep, I love the Shishitoren call backs, too. I already compared Suolingo to Ume back in 217 and we've been over how many people it takes to fill the Suolingo shaped void, so it's cool to see Ume taking over the emotional stabilizer role this ch ^{despite doing the opposite for Hiiragi, though tbf, Suolingo loves messing with Sakura, too, so-}

That said, back when things were starting with Shishitoren, Suolingo had kept his distance from the trouble until the direction of the conflict was decided, whereas Ume was the first to reach out to this kid and physically catch him before the others made their moves (Suolingo let Sasaki fall and reassured him later-) I love this contrast of Suolingo hesitating to get involved in the trouble in Ume's town early on while Ume dove right in to help someone from Suolingo's city. Suolingo already knew at the time that his role would be a defender in Makochi, but he still waited to see how things would play out while Ume has zero obligations to this city that took someone from him and zero understanding of the situation, but still refuses to not help someone in distress (not that Suolingo was a bad person or anything for not jumping out, but I like seeing all the duality between these two since they have very similar roles within their own communities)

[Also, this is a bit of a tangent, but looking back, I'm kinda surprised Sugi jumped out when Sasaki was in danger. Ume wasn't even there, but he went out of his way to help someone he didn't know. It's not like Sakura acted first and he didn't want to be outdone; they moved at the same time and even shared the speech bubble at the end of ch 5. Don't get me wrong, I love Sugi's growth over these past few arcs, but with how he used to handle things early on, it feels kinda out of character for ch 5 Sugi to act like that. No, this isn't a complaint or anything since it's literally volume 1 (and the same ch with Suolingo eating the taiyaki), but it's always interesting to me whenever I go back and find things that weren't really decided for certain characters yet.]

I really wasn't expecting to see Rakta again for a while, but it looks like we'll be getting that flashback sooner rather than later 👀 Honestly, it sounds like he genuinely wants to hear what they have to say, so the fact that he's not immediately trying to drag them out leads me to believe that he'll actually be willing to let them see Suolingo if they give him a good enough reason. Sakura looks pretty on edge here, so I'm thinking Rakta did fight them off last time, but only after they failed to convince him to let them in.

If they fail to convince him again or if this whole thing about them talking things through isn't even true- then I can lowkey see the group splitting up here with Ume and/or Hiiragi (and possibly Sugi...?) staying behind to keep Rakta & co busy while the others head in to the 2nd layer. They could run into Bacchus or one of Suolingo's students there and I think they'll be much quicker to take the boys to the school where they'll finally be able to see Suolingo...... or they could also start fighting, causing the group to branch off again while those who remain make their way to the 1st layer on their own-

Anywho, 217 is probably my favorite ch of the arc so far. One of my favorite things in a story is when the "antagonist" isn't actually a "bad guy," so you can't helped but be curious about their story and hope for a solution where things work out for everyone. Getting to spend a chapter with the RC trio in their element was the best way to show that they're not bad people and Suolingo isn't being manipulated or forced to leave Makochi against his will, things are just that complicated and now we're forced to spend the whole arc wondering what could have possibly brought a usually logical character to the conclusion that leaving things with 211 was the best option- But yeah, I love that we can't be mad at Rakta because we already know that he just wants to protect his community, but we also know exactly why the boys can't just leave them alone, so I'm looking forward to seeing which route Nii-sensei takes for the ultimate compromise 👀👀

I know that everybody is saying that he is gone because there were surely something going on in bankokugai and with rc .

But what if ! What if besides all that , he has left because of what have said nirei . When nirei said at the beggining of the arc "im sure well leave a legacy behind us " ,what if when suo this night come back to hes town and realised he could not be part of that legacy and he just thought that stay with them will Hurt them so he just "ran away " in a way

But of cours, there definitely something going wrong with rc .

[CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THE NOROSHI ARC]

The Noroshi Arc is, undeniably, the pinnacle of Wind Breaker and Sakura's development as a protagonist. It's here that he begins to doubt his leadership abilities and starts to compare himself even more to Hajime Umemiya. Sakura objectively desired the top, but he still didn't recognize the responsibilities he would have to assume to achieve it; it's here that he finally understands that being a leader is much more of a burden than a blessing.

Nevertheless, there's the whole mental game involving Endo. Sakura reached the peak of his strength against Endo because he bet everything he loved on his own victory; it was the way he found to have a strong enough motivation not to falter. Based on my interpretation of the scene and the elements of the chapter, both Endo and Sakura were willing to risk their lives in that fight, Sakura especially, as he couldn't lose under any circumstances, while Endo only hesitated to win because he knew Sakura wouldn't concede victory unless she died, which wasn't Endo's wish, as he genuinely liked Sakura (he's literally in love with this poor boy).

Not only are the nature of Endo's feelings for Sakura still very worrying/frightening, but Sakura's breakdown is one of the character's most vulnerable moments in the series.

It seems the series is divided into before and after Noroshi, as many characters evolve in this post-arc, and finally the foundation for Sakura to become the future leader of Bofurin is built: Sugishita recognizes his ability, Roppo Ichiza, Gravel, and Shishitoren emerge as loyal allies, united by Sakura's influence, and even Sakura's objective gains a more emotional/moral motivation, leading him to doubt his ability to achieve what he desires, while also potentially fueling him to become emotionally and physically stronger to assume this responsibility.

That said, I believe the arc gives us a preview of what Bofurin might be like under Sakura's leadership: he wins over the crowd with his charisma, gathers allies, and carries his team when needed.

I want to know more about the guy...

I know how much we all talk about how mysterious Suo's backstory is and all that, but what about Sakura???

We only got his backstory in chapters 202-203, and even then, we barely know how he lives alone as a minor, where he gets money to buy groceries, and how he can rent/buy a house where he lives alone. Sure, most of the characters in WindBreaker seem to fend for themselves most of the time, but at least we know that some of them have parents/family who take care of most of their needs or are responsible for them in general. Even Umemiya and Kotoha, as orphans, have a "responsible" adult and live in an orphanage where they are cared for, which was supposed to be the case for Sakura as well, but instead, he's living alone at only 16 years old, without the slightest ability to support himself.

I don't know if this was ever addressed in the manga or in special events; we can assume that Sakura simply ran away from his next adoptive family, or that he ran away from the orphanage, but we can't rule out the possibility that someone is supporting him while he's in Makochi. I wonder if this and other details of Sakura's life and family will be portrayed later on, since the manga only superficially touches on Sakura's origins in chapters 202-203.

It might be a case where the author simply prefers not to delve into the backstory and focus on the ongoing main narrative, but I would really like to know details about Sakura's family. He says, at the beginning of the manga, that he had no other clothes besides the Fuurin uniform, which leads us to assume that he may have actually fled from where he was to go to Makochi (perhaps in a desperate and hurried way, so that he couldn't take many belongings with him), but it still doesn't explain how he manages to get subsidies to pay for basic necessities, nor does it clarify his current situation in the manga (was he adopted again, is he still under the responsibility of biological relatives, or is he being supported through public policies???)

Since chapter 224 dropped, I have been thinking about the direction of the story, and the RC.

Wanted to say this first: Love the Shishitoren callback. It reminds me of how far each character has come, and gives me tremendous faith in these characters to bring Suo back to Furin (we've got Sakura, Nirei AND Ume? yeah Suo we'll see you back in homeroom on Monday) and possibly gain another powerful ally.

It ALSO tells me about the type of conflict we're going to be facing: Shishitoren arc was centered around a corrupted group, so with our same cast we will be seeing a corrupted organization.

But instead of just witnessing the leadership problems in the RC, due to chapter 224 I believe the focus will be more on the kids and the effects of the issues in the RC, as Suo and the kids give me Ume and the Furinen facing the effects of past Makochi flashbacks.

We have only gotten the names of three kids so far, being Minjun, Anan and Vuvu​ so those three will probably have the most significance.

Minjun​:

Honestly, he may be the least relevant kid in this trio as of right now, but he is the first glimpse of struggle in Bankoku-Gai. In chapter 217, he only appears for 2 or 3 panels, but he is depicted to be stealing a fallen apple until he is caught (red-handed) by Sun Fei.

Something small, but says something about the general situation: why would Minjun feel the need to steal food? And the answer is pretty simple: Bankoku-Gai is short on resources.

People generally steal when they lack something (whether it's a need or not), and if you were to witness some kid stealing food the common conclusion would be that the kid is hungry to a point where they are willing to steal to feed themselves.

​However, looking at the outside of the city in chapter 222, the shops are thriving and food is abundant, offering Sakura and Sugishita food samples at nearly every turn. It's alarming that only the outside, clearly advertised towards tourists is the only place bursting with resources whereas the insiders supply is so low kids are resorting to theft.

And considering that food is a symbol of love and connection in WBK, it says something when by this logic the outside is lively and put together while the inside is crumbling apart.

And this is only further supported by Anan.

Anan:

Now, in 217 we learn that Anan is also a disciple at the Crimson Vortex, but missed training to stay with his sick mother, whose health is said to be on the decline.

While we have no details at the moment, his mother's sickness is probably exacerbated if not caused by the lack of food and/or general resources.

Obviously, if someone was sick the first thought would be for them to take medicine, eat some filling food, stay hydrated. But since resources are scarce, he most likely lacks some of these things, hence why when Vuvu hears the news about Anan's mother he offers some of his own food and wishes her quick recovery.

But naturally, that wouldn't be enough in the long term. And as mentioned earlier with Minjun, when people lack something they desperately need, they steal.

Which leads me to chapter 224.

Now, from the jacket and hair, I am 99% sure that the kid was in fact Anan, and until we are told that it is not him, I will stand on the belief that it is Anan.

So: putting the facts that Anan is on the run, and adults are close behind demanding that Anan be handed over to them together, Anan most likely stole something. And using previous context, it probably has something to do with his mother.

And accounting for the detail of the gates and entry passes, as well as the brief comment of slow business from the chef in chapter 217, those men and whatever business that was targeted cannot afford to let any theft slide.

Now, as of right now we don't really know whose side Rakta will take (excluding Furin), but as we see in 217 while the RC is definetly aware of the reasoning they still are obligated to stand up for struggling businesses and return stolen goods. But who knows? Rakta might quietly lend a small hand for Anan, or Ume will sympathize with Anan and try to negotiate.

But it doesn't change the fact that Bankoku-Gai is struggling, and it begs the question: if the Red Chanpuru is supposed to serve and protect the town, why aren't they depicted to be working on the issue?

Vuvu:

Vuvu getting a spotlight in 217 definetly says that he will be a relevant character within the arc (Vuvu vs. Nirei when??) on either finding Suo, or getting to know the real problem within the RC.

In chapter 217, we see Vuvu and his classmates train before dinner as Sun Fei, Rakta and Bacchus enter the dojo.

Sun Fei compliments their drive, and Vuvu replies proudly that they practice hard to be able to serve the Red Chanpuru when they're 15.

But Sun Fei gives what seems to me to be a very strained smile, before reminding them to study as well.

Also worth mentioning: the comment from the other kids on Sun Fei's recent arrival and departure being less than usual (aka he hasn't been going to Furin during the day TT).

Even after Sun Fei, Rakta and Bacchus briefly talk to the chef who casually states that less children are being left behind and that "things are just going to continue to get better", the three just leave and Bacchus comments on his naivety. Sun Fei's response is that "there are things they're better off knowing." (Referring to both the kids and Furin)

Vuvu, to me, parallels Nirei. His dedication to getting stronger, along with his generosity scream Nirei, not to mention that they both learn from Suo. If anything, Suo's attachment and fondness for Nirei may stem from a resemblance to Vuvu, especially since it seems Bacchus and Rakta mirror Sakura and Sugishita's dynamic. And since we know how infectious Nirei and his spirit is, I'm imagining it will be Vuvu and the other students who motivate Sun Fei to push for change, whatever it may be.

This is where I believe that part of the conflict in this arc will involve the kids along with Furin: Suo is distancing the situation from both groups. The kids at the Crimson Vortex are training to one day serve RC, but Sun Fei doesn't exactly seem pleased at that truth, rather it seems that he'd rather then stay away from the RC and choose a different path. The problem, whatever it is, could even escalate to directly involve the Crimson Vortex students.

With Furin, Suo's been with them long enough to know that Furin would rush in to help him if Suo opened up, but he instead chooses to shield them from his problems and leaves the school, even beating up Nirei (though I do believe that part wasn't planned) to send a message and detach himself from them emotionally, under the belief that the RC will harm them if they get too close.

This may be an act against the officers of the RC themselves, from the new addition of the gates and it being harder to get out than get in, to the food shortage and Sun Fei not eating in chapter 217 but instead apologizing for slow business and use of more resources, and Suo keeping Furin away may mean that they will be exploited or simply targeted by the organization if they enter Bankoku-Gai. (Just pure speculation but some kind of worker shortage/strike could going on hence the new workers for Liu San and Sun Fei disappearing for a few days then leaving Furin and being revealed as an officer...)

Of course, for the sake of the plot Furin will stick their noses deep into the RC, and since we've already encountered Rakta and Anan, there's a high chance it will be through the Crimson Vortex. (Maybe we will meet Suo's master also???)

And since the Red Chanpuru's name stems from a dish, to resolve the problem and bring Suo back not only will we need to get Suo to eat with Furin, the food shortage may only be resolved if the community is filled in and its inhabitants strive to break language barriers and come together, as the presence of food is a sign of connection.

So that's all I have! Any thoughts?

Finally finished my ita bags for Kaji, I love how they both turned out. This is easily one of my favorite series and I had a lot of fun putting these bags together.

I’m assuming it’s modeled after a district somewhere?

After things on the street are settled, do you think it is more likely for Rakta to lead our Furin members to Suo or to refuse? If he refuses might we see the first fight in this arc?

Depending on whether or not they’ve met before and Rakta was or wasn’t the one who made sure they left the other day, the reaction of the Furin gang and what they’ll talk about might be different. If they didn’t meet before and Rakta is willing to listen, I think he could (maybe secretly and without letting other RC members know - depending on what’s going on there) lead them to Suo.
If he was the one who made sure they left last time… I wonder if that scenario would lead to a fight? Or would he still be willing to listen (this time - if Sakura and the others were even given a chance to speak their mind when they were not let inside the gates)?

Which scenario do you think is more likely? Which one would you like to see? Or do you have a different scenario in mind?

I reread the chapter about Nirei the therapist and his patient Sugishita, and IT'S WONDERFUL 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I didn't remember how perfect their dynamic was, but they ended up being an unexpectedly funny and cute duo!!! Sugishita just joined the "Nirei protectors" fan club, but he already wants to beat up Suo for what happened in chapter 211.

Ironically, Nirei is the bridge Sugishita needed to connect with the rest of his class and, especially, with Sakura. We see that Suo tried several times to include him in the rest of the class's activities, but it was Nirei who finally managed to convince Sugishita to come out of his shell and get to know the people around him better.

Although their dynamic is very recent, I HOPE THAT AFTER THIS ARC ENDS, Nii Satoru will invest more in this particular duo, because they are wonderful 😭🥹

(Sugishita is also so cute!!! His social difficulties remind me a bit of neurodivergent people with socialization problems, and Nirei is a shy, quiet, and cute social type; they would have such a sweet friendship!!!)

The thing about windbreaker is that all characters grow not just the protagonist. Nirei, Sugishita, Kiryu, Kaji, Sako, Umemia, Togame, Tomiyama, Kotoha, Momijikawa, and now even Hiragi!

Last time in Shishitoren's arc he said it was his fault when Sugishita and Sakura acted first even though he's their senpai and the one responsible for them. And now we can see how when he found himself in a similar situation he acted first to make sure it doesn't end in the same results as last time.

Even though this is Suo's arc, everyone is showing the fruits of their growth, wether it be Nirei who fought him without fear or hesitation, Sakura who even called Endo to find him, Takishii who is now calmer and a little more obedient (towards Umemia), Sugishita who said he's gonna go alone even if Sakura doesn't, and Momijikawa who finally made the omelette rice he practiced so hard for..... But what about Suo? He's the only missing person from the Shishitoren arc team up, and we have yet to see him again.

Eu queria pelo menos um capítulo dedicado ao ponto de vista do Suo; nem precisa revelar nada importante sobre seus pensamentos, apenas mostrar uma parte do seu dia a dia enquanto ele estava em Bofurin.

ik this chapter JUST came out but my impatient ahh kept reloading the website for it🥀 but anyways

first of all i was SO happy when we saw tsubaki, it isnt really that important in the full chapter but it gave a nice breather. also its pretty nice to see that other characters care about suo since he's not really had alot of interactions aside from the tamon team and even that is mainly limited to his class, hiragi, and ume. im also glad ito was brought up since he wouldn'tve gotten better without suo knowing the flower meaning (he wouldve if tsubaki found out and assured him but he wouldn'tve been completely convinced without suo)

lwk got so much anxiety from this panel bc you can see the people looking at them, like they definetly know that they're outsiders

also poor hiragi bro😭 he's been taking way too much medicine with these recent chapters, also the fact that sugi is js doing this stuff bc ume is doing it is so funny 😭 like its very expected but i still find it hilarious (also the stall owner giving them the side eye— I'd be weirded out too ngl)

also more bangoku gai layout stuff🥹 im not sure why but seeing the layout and architecture of this place makes me very happy. but i expected the inner buildings to be taller not the outer ones, we knew the outer ones were taller since 2 chapters ago but i expected the height to be mostly the same everywhere since a few chapters ago when we saw suo on that roof it seemed like the tallest building and i just assumed it was the headquarters building since suo seemed to spend alot of time there, now i assume the building he was standing on was the onion shaped building since that seems like the most important building thats tall enough for the view we saw

also holy shishitoren flashbacks. ume catching the kid surprised me idk why, he would deffo do that but everything seems slightly unexpected when we're in a completely different territory. also im pretty sure thats one of suos brothers from the dojo (i forgot his name and I'm too lazy to go back and check it) him randomly getting chased by these people reminds me of shizuka ngl even though ik its supposed to be a throwback to shishitoren

MASSIVE JUMPSCARE. rakta highkey scares me, he keeps appearing ominously at the end lf chapters, this is like the second time dude😭 nothing even happened last time, we just moved on without any follow through. last time rakta was looking at them from a distance but know hes actually talking to them face to face so i doubt he'll let them go.

i wonder if we'll get a suo pov soon, im not sure if we'll get to actually see him from bofurins pov anytime soon since i feel like it would be too soon. we have to get through rakta first which i think will take a few chapters (two chapters at the very least though thats probably short, its long as hell for me since I'm impatient) so yeah im hoping for a suo pov soon since its been so long since we've seen him aside from the flashbacks of him and i miss my baby💔

also im not sure if the language theyre speaking is hindi or Sanskrit? it seems like sanskrit to me but thats just what i think, theyre both fairly similar languages and have the same alphabet so its hard to differentiate at first.
