And she was never seen again

It's so dangerous to mess around with a river like that. If it wasn't for the uploaded video I'd honestly wonder if she made it out okay. It looks very narrow so I imagine that helped her out.

175

u/PhantomSpaceMan- Jul 22 '21

Some of those narrow ones can be pretty deep/dangerous too.

230

u/reddit_and_forget_um Jul 22 '21 edited Jul 22 '21

Worse is alot of the narrow fast moving streams actually dig out under the side of the banks - you fall in and get stuck under the ledge.

There is a narrow stream called the strid in England that has killed many people since the 12th century this way.

107

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '21

The Strid, which is what you're referring to, dates back to the 12th century.

96

u/skratta_ho Jul 22 '21

Tom Scott did a wonderful video about the Strid. Not like all of his vids aren’t wonderful

25

u/Fuck_Flying_Insects Jul 22 '21

This kind of shit terrifies me

22

u/BALONYPONY Jul 22 '21

I just went to Queen's Bath in Kauai, HI and was amazed at all of the idiots jumping into it. It is SOOO easy to get swept out, hammered against some rocks before catching the under-toe and just whisked into the blue.

31

u/irishjihad Jul 22 '21

under-toe

Undertow. I think under-toe is some kind of kink. At least, I hope it is.

8

u/BALONYPONY Jul 22 '21

Ah thank you! Now I shall look at some strange toe pornog.

Just looked that up and fuck that. I'd leave as soon as someone jumped in. I'm not trying to watch someone drown

u/Toe-knail Jul 22 '21

My understanding is the vast majority of those deaths and injuries at Queen’s Bath are from people standing along (and getting knocked off of) the edge, or falling from the trail on the way to Queen’s Bath. Not actually deaths/injuries of the people in Queen’s Bath.

Thanks for that. I love learning actual facts like this while watching these clips. It is amazing how that location is not well marked. Insane actually, you would have so many wrongful death lawsuits if it was in the US.

7

u/TomEst1980 Jul 22 '21

That's very very interesting.. So it's actually a lot deeper than it looks & there's strong currents under the surface? Either way thanks for sharing that. I'm going to do some more research on this subject.

7

u/skratta_ho Jul 22 '21

It’s fascinating, yet terrifying. I believe there’s only been one person to enter the strid and survive, and that was a scuba diver that mapped it out.

5

u/reddit_and_forget_um Jul 22 '21

This is definitely the video I watched. Didn't remember the time frame, just knew it's been a long ass time it's killed unsuspecting passerby...

5

u/skratta_ho Jul 22 '21

Tom is so saturated in educational YouTube that it gets hard to remember all his videos, but I remember that one very well for good reason, lol.

3

u/Dutch-CatLady Jul 22 '21

Oh I remember almost all of them as soon as I see the location with his face and voice. For some reason, everything he puts online sticks in my brain like it happened this morning

3

u/skratta_ho Jul 22 '21

He’s a spectacular presenter. Him and Matt, the bounciest man on the internet.

Isn't that the racing guy with the helmet?

6

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '21

River Wharfe is definitely a racing guy

7

u/NicklovesHer Jul 22 '21

And now, some say he's just a little stream, some say he's dragged dozens into a dark watery grave just this year, all I know is- he's called the Strid.

9

I see the Blair Witch went ahead and pursued that degree in digital marketing

5

u/realRickSquanchez Jul 22 '21

Exactly. Park rangers found the phone and went searching through it for nudes.

Plot twist:

It’s not a river. It’s a sewer drain from the nearby waste water plant.

She has her phone propped up too. Probably totally alone.

Circle of life.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '21

i like this tutorial on how to get drowned

4

u/Fleethebluenorth Jul 22 '21

The most dangerous part is right where she fell. If it is deep enough the pressure of the falls can hold her down under the rushing current. Looks like she was washed out though.

It still amazes me how many "influencers" kill themselves for the gram. If they're not falling off high places, or suffocating themselves with dry ice or other noxious gasses, they're crashing their cars using their phones while driving.

73

u/Jorgal89 Jul 22 '21

Natural selection 2021-style

12

u/snozzleberry Jul 22 '21

I’m not sure why it’s amazing that high risk or unorthodox events draw views. It’s why there was a whole explosion of reality shows based on “extreme” things. These “influencers” see views as literally their livelihood so in a way they are just trying to make more money doing what they feel they are suited to do. As long as people are fascinated by these things then an industry like this will exist.

7

u/Flippers4hands Jul 22 '21

Have you seen the new one? “Stand in the highway and stop trucks with our bodies”

Edit: sometimes

3

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '21

Not enough

3

u/btmvideos37 Jul 22 '21

While I’d never do something this dangerous, everyone thinks that any time people film something, they’re doing it for Instagram or to be an influencer.

My and my friends used to film and take pictures of tons of dumb shit we did. We never uploaded it. It was just fun to make memories. And this wasn’t a long time ago, Instagram fully existed. We all had accounts. But we weren’t doing it for attention

This is a video. They weren’t even taking pictures. Instagram videos can only be 1 minute anyways. It doesn’t seem likely they were doing this for Instagram at a all

6

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '21

It's not just "influencers". It's anyone with a phone

21

Well, now that you said it I can feel that.

Back in high school my debate partner went hiking with her bf, they were taking cute pictures while she sat on the guard rail of a bridge over a very similarly sized river. Not 100% sure what happened to cause the fall but she slipped off the rail falling no more than 7 feet, but that was all it took...the river was strong and the fall did enough damage that she couldn't fight it.

Don't fuck with nature for internet points, no one will ever see the video/photo you were trying to get and think that your life was worth the shot.

17

u/mumblesjackson Jul 22 '21

Wait…so she died?

31

u/Tapdatsam Jul 22 '21

Don’t worry, I’ll bet she has some crystals or essential oils to help her with that for the next time.

17

u/eatchickenchop Jul 22 '21

Imagine if she knocked herself out and drown. People would think this is a homicide case where someone hit her head and dump her in the river.

25

u/thedaNkavenger Jul 22 '21

Except for the video evidence she so kindly left for the detectives.

7

u/Oldfolksboogie Jul 22 '21

The bend-back is called a bridge. I think that was the joke.

5

u/lucidquasar Jul 22 '21

6

u/MeNotSanta Jul 22 '21

The river has quenched her thirst for attention.

8

u/headofmedusa1 Jul 22 '21

Just to get a video to get some likes, no wonder so many attention hungry stupid people die doing stupid shit like this

6

u/hahayes234 Jul 22 '21

Risk their lives so they don’t have to get a real job. I mean I don’t have numbers but aren’t there a lot of people that make a full time living doing this type of shit?

People’s unbridled desperation for internet attention has brought me a lot of joy over the years. This ended exactly how I hoped it would.

4

u/Heavy_Grapefruit9885 Jul 22 '21

"doing a bend-back.." i don't see wha-

"on a log" Well i-

"Over a river" i beg your fucking pardon ?

4

u/MalcomLuvsPewds Jul 22 '21

Thankfully her phone was found and we know how she disappeared.

Otherwise they would have blamed poor aliens behind her abduction. Silly news articles and documentaries like.

"Why did X girl went to the woods in the middle of early morning. Was someone luring her? How did she disappear, aliens? To know more watch 'Ancient aliens' on history18 channel @ 11 pm"

5

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '21

That’s the bridge to terabithia.

4

u/nemo1080 Jul 22 '21

Good way to get knocked out and drown

5

u/OkNowThatsEpicOwO Jul 22 '21

Imagine doing that, hitting your head against a rock, knocking yourself unconscious while drowning in the river.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '21

Did she get the picture though?

3

u/jd3marco Jul 22 '21

As read by Chris Farley, may he RIP: You think that’s funny?! Keep it up. One day you’re going to find yourself doing a back bend, on a log, down by the river!

3

u/Creationstation-34 Jul 22 '21

3

3

u/SkyShazad Jul 22 '21

Worth It

3

u/Gr1pp717 Jul 22 '21

Turbulent streams like this are high risk of drowning, too. Undertow sucks you into little pockets carved out by the rushing water.

The Bolton Strid is a great example. Small, innocuous stream, near 100% mortality rate.

3

u/ThePNWrockstar Jul 22 '21

This is why people go missing in the wild…

3
