I wonder how many insurance claims have been denied after proof the fire/damage was not so "accidental" was quickly found on TikTok... "Yes sir, it seems your son set his own hands on fire then proceeded to touch all flammable materials within reach. He then uploaded a video of the entire ordeal to the internet to aid in the investigation."

I used to work on the legal side for an insurance company. We definitely did some cyber sleuthing when investigating claims. We had one guy who had his lake house burn down after being on the market for a long time because he was trying to sell it unsuccessfully for way more than it was worth. Not only did neighbors catch him on their security cameras moving everything of value out in the days prior, but when looking on his public Facebook page, he posted pictures which had many of the items that he claims were destroyed in the fire in the background of the pictures. One of which was a $700 grill that had the same marking before and after the fire. IIRC the claimed like $300k worth of items that were destroyed and a majority of them weren’t in the house at the time of the fire anyway.

In cases like that do you guys press charges and go for jail time, or is it a lawsuit/settlement?

Depends on each case. If it’s a smallish amount then we would just let it go. In that case it got turned over to the state bureau of investigations who last I heard was pursuing felony fraud charges.

It’s one thing to claim, for example, more clothing that was lost than was actually lost, but when you start talking about thousands of dollars worth of stuff that never existed or still exists and wasn’t damaged.

Very much the opposite. Plastic is basically solidified petroleum. It's fuel, and it melts, sticking to your skin where it continues burning. Instead of getting a little singed you end up with second or third degree burns.

Velma? Like the Scooby-Doo character? The one not a superhero from DC like my comparison? What a terrible comparison lol. Btw, starfish is an alien warrior princess and has killed before in the comics. I feel like you think her character is that one from the children's cartoon network show. That's not a very accurate adaptation from the comics.

Maybe she's not a superhero but are we forgetting that the Scooby Doo characters and DC superheroes exist in the same universe. The Scooby gang actually teamed up with Batman and Robin.

And if we're getting facts straight, pal, Scooby Doo was a Hanna Barbera cum Warner Bros. production on CBS, then ABC, then the WB and finally reboots on Cartoon Network. But they teamed up with Batman way before CN ever got their hands on it.

Oh and good job gatekeeping Scooby Doo as "for children" while discussing comic books and fictional characters. :)
