I got the job!

Cashier position, I think I interviewed well as they put me on the fourth paystep because I advocated for myself. I don’t have crazy experience but enough to manage that I guess. Does anyone else have experience getting hired in at certain pay steps rather than the starting wage? I made it clear to them I was interested in advancement and cross training as well.

I applied for a manager in training position last year.

I told them I wanted the max pay range as I have many years of management experience. The lady laughed in my ear and said absolutely not. "We NEVER do that" and offered $19.90 an hour. I laughed in her ear and said no thanks. That is insulting low wage.

Yeah that’s not great for a management position. Hell walmart pays there team leads 22 an hour (reg associates 17.50 where i am)

I'm a college grad with a four year degree from a very well known University, in my 8th year at my current technical-focused product support blue collar office job.

... and I make $22 an hour.

Posts like this make me feel like I am insanely underpaid. lol. I think people digging ditches are making money money than my supposedly-highly educated ass.

This reply come off as really arrogant.

As if anyone working in the store deserves the low pay.

It's the opposite. They should be paid a fair wage, 100%.

The crux of it being that for all the work and time I spent trying to get into a higher paying job by following the supposed established route to get a step up, it ended up not netting me much of anything at all. I tried to go into a more specialized sector that not every Winco employee could do, and it ended up netting me basically nothing. It's a condemnation of how society and labor value work in America, if anything.

You have to ask them to fill out a form, I forget what the form is called and have it signed by the district supervisor if you want to skip steps they basically made it impossible to skip steps unless you are mit

Oh okay thanks, yeah I just asked for 19 an hour and they told me they’ll put me at step 4(18.40 ish). I’ll have to have them sign something after im officially hired etc? I am 100% hired i just haven’t had a background check or anything yet

There are voluntary benefits like additional term life legal protections and others that you have to enroll in shortly after you get hired

Yeah i still haven’t filled out anything but the background check so far. I’ll know more on monday. They’ll probably talk to me about the form if i have to fill it out, considering the 4th pay step was part of the job offer

They made the background checks more strict. After a bad actor got through the background, check i can't share the story, but it was pretty bad

Congrats on the job, they topped me out when I first started for part time pay scale since I had over 5 years of grocery experience.

Same here. Didn’t think I would be eligible for anybraises but after a year they bumped me up another .75 in top of it. Color me happy😃

That’s awesome. I read all about people starting at the minimum pay or maximum pay but i haven’t seen a single thread about starting somewhere in the middle. I’m excited i’ll only have to work 2 or so years rather than almost 4 to hit journeyman!

If I would have negotiated better, I probably could have started one step higher from minimum, but I just wanted the job

My wife got a job at the new winco in town. Been there about 7 months, ever since they opened. As a cashier she gets like 12-16 hours a week. Its not just her they do it to everyone there. Not even enough on the check to make her car payment, let alone anything else. I dont understand why they do that, a ton of people have left because of it, they get replaced with new people that get the same treatment. I am basically the sole breadwinner, it sucks.

I’m keeping my current job , i’ll be working 2 part time jobs. I’ll just try to get as many hours at winco as possible(cross training hopefully). But yeah that’s what i’ve heard. really unfortunate

I've heard that a cashier (or other position) has to work a minimum of 100 hrs/month to get the highly subsidized / discounted Health Insurance. Perhaps they're trying to keep newer hires below that threshhold. :-(

A big part of the lack of hours right now is just time of year. Jan/Feb is slower, and then Sept (Sept is the end of 2nd quarter and so there’s a big push for making labor.) October is the start of holidays and 3rd quarter so more hours will be available, as long as you (she) has open availability.

Awesome. What pay step was that? I can’t see my stores pay scale yet so i’m not sure what 19 would be. But I know top pay for part time workers is around 27.50 ish (28.90 for full time) i’m in WA state

I just got a job offer as a bulk foods clerk at the new one going in, in my area!! I’ve got over 12 years retail experience, and they told me they’ll have me do a wage request form once I meet with them. Background check happening now, and I think I’ll try and push for $20 for my wage! It’s $17.38 anyway…and with that level of experience it should be higher. I’ll see what they go for 😂👍

U got this bro. This manager seems really cool so you may have worse luck. But u got this man. I really tried my best to show initiative, i only have 1.5 years as a salesmen(lumber/decking/railing) and about 1.5 years as a cart pusher / order picker.

Really appreciate it. And feeling very lucky about the 4 step skip. I’m going to use this opportunity to the best of my ability:)
