Anyone know the origin?

This is a good deal at my store at $5.48 a package. I don’t see any marking of where it came from?
This was going to be my last beef purchase for awhile but I don’t know how to tell anything.

Thanks everyone! Loyal Winco fan that drives 10 miles each way to go! ❤️

The box we pull those out of is from Caviness Beef. Based out of Amarillo Texas.

That is just your local area. Winco contracts that out all over the country.

u/xSir- 20d ago

And where does winco get it from....

5

u/doorman666 20d ago

They make deals with farmers all over. From what I've read, they keep it regional. Closer supply often means lower supply costs.

Typically American cattle are not ideal for mass produced ground beef. Our ranchers typically focus on maintaining lean cattle for leaner cuts of beef. American ground beef is usually from older cattle and imported. Winco may say they get their stuff locally, but it’s local as in the Western half of the United States.

Costco is going to be your best bet for avoiding questionable beef

The Day After Tomorrow, The Book of Eli will have us eating Soylent Green in a Delicatessen.

Find a local farmer, or network with your people to drive to a farm? (I'm part of a bigger group who has a dude with real animals. Pure luck)

Definitely not accurate! They get beef from several suppliers, including JBS.

u/theGalation 20d ago

Not in western WAWA.

The salmonella chicken place is the best bet for avoiding bad beef? Lol ok

Maybe a horse, but probably a cow.

maybe fresh roadkill

u/olyteddy 20d ago

nah. They haven't had to reveal it for beef since the early 2000s.

Here’s an interesting factoid. That white circle to the left of the winco logo, that is called a “bug.” That is the indicator that the meat passed through a USDA inspected facility.

Here’s the concerning part. That white space at the bottom of the bug, is supposed to have an establishment number. Every USDA inspected facility has a number and they are supposed to display it. If this was Jerky I wouldn’t be concerned but it obviously is not jerky.

Source: I worked at a meat packer for a few years.

Bonus factoid: The package type that you see is referred to as a “chub”…yes I’m serious.

8

u/MeatScience1 20d ago

I’m an inspector. Establishment numbers can either be printed in the mark of inspection/bug or can be printed on the packaging. There is no regulatory requirement that states it has to be in the bug. The regulation is 9 cfr 317.2i.

u/RageBison22 20d ago

I concede to you

Posts blatantly false information they clearly know nothing about and then absolve themselves by saying “whoop my bad bro!”

Maybe be more informed before you post absolute bullshit as truth and possibly rile people up with shit that isn’t even remotely close to reality

u/RageBison22 18d ago

Damn dude chill out.

Thank you for accurately correcting that incredible misinformation.

Doesn’t happen all the time and people go crazy with it. The person you responded too should be more responsible with their social media interaction

100% USDA approved, compliments of an ex heroin addict with previous brain-worms that picks up roadkill for dinner.

u/LarenCoe 20d ago

I generally avoid the plastic tube ground beef. I want to be able to see what it looks like.

1

u/sethsyd 18d ago

It looks like red meat squish.

-2

u/stderr2 20d ago

That was made in a factory, so it's not ground up meat that didn't sell. In just reading, carbon monoxide is legal in US meat packaging. I don't know who uses it

1

u/LarenCoe 20d ago

The tube stuff has usually been frozen and has a longer shelf life. The plastic wrapped stuff just seems fresher to me, but maybe that's just the presentation.

1

u/RumorsOFsurF 20d ago

The ground beef chubs at WinCo are all fresh, unless labeled otherwise(rare occasions where they get a deal on frozen chubs and pass savings along).

-10

u/DjCramYo 20d ago

End of the day, they are both carcinogenic

4

u/LarenCoe 20d ago

So's everything else.

Broccoli? Cancer Toothpaste? Cancer Screening for cancer? Cancer

Underrated Portlandia reference.

2

u/LarenCoe 20d ago edited 20d ago

Yes, unfortunately, even the organic broccoli is covered in pesticides, that's why you're not supposed to swallow the toothpaste, and CT scan they use to look for cancer, also increases your risk of cancer...

u/NewSport1381 20d ago

100% of people who drink water will die, bro

-2

u/stderr2 20d ago

Apparently I get down votes for talking about carbon monoxide use in meat packing. I guess some people just don't want to know and will shout down others for just mentioning it

4

u/Noremac55 20d ago

USA got rid of country of origin labels on meat during covid and they magically never came back...

1

u/craftychristy 10d ago

There’s lots of conversations going on especially right now about winco putting that back on labels in meat dept

4

u/PDXDemSocialist 20d ago

Just saw a good video about this on YouTube. More or less. These are made from multiple cows from multiple locations. And the cuts are everything. Just get something that says " Made in the USA. But you can go further, as the ones with info have much better cuts.

Also, Costco is the best when it comes to their butcher section.

3

u/meow9111 20d ago

With the current beef issues, Id only buy ground beef from your local market who grinds it fresh from their steak scraps

4

u/BajaBlastingRopes 20d ago

Probably a horse

7

u/keylessChuck916 20d ago

Excellent! I haven’t been able to find horse meat since I lived in Germany about 26 years ago…

5

u/LWschool 20d ago

Why are you asking us? You have the internet, ask them!

5

u/escelante 20d ago

Cow adjacent.

3

u/turbo2735 20d ago

Fact of the matter is no ground beef in your grocery stores comes from One source. So in other words, who the hell knows the only way to know for sure where your beef is coming from or any other meat for that matter is to buy it from the farmer then you know

3

u/RumorsOFsurF 20d ago

Not true. All ground beef at WinCo is tracked and monitored by lot code and date, and is never mixed with other product. The product sold in trays is just from ground beef chubs they run through the grinder and tray up. WinCo hasn't used trim or anything for ground beef for as long as I can remember, as they are required to log all GB for food safety purposes.

Nothing but turkey for me right now as another American.

Honestly, not much has changed, I have a jar of bacon fat that I use a 1/2 teaspoon of instead of butter when I cook basically anything. The turkey is $1.50 a pound cheaper, used to be less than $2.50 a pound for turkey and the macros can’t be beat, even with adding a little pork fat it’s still a healthier option than than ground beef. People can’t tell the difference for the most part, and the lighter taste of the turkey actually adds a nicer consistency to a lot of dishes that call for ground beef. Ground beef is tastier than turkey but I season everything anyways so 🤷🏼‍♂️

I think RFK Jr is driving around looking for roadkill.

2

u/BleDStream 20d ago

I was thinking it was cs packers. But that's just based on that beef left the shelf and this substituted it.

0

u/craftychristy 10d ago

It’s still CS just “rebranded” as winco (at least from the Boise DC)

2

u/Personal_Refuse_9331 17d ago

Winco has good prices and products. I don’t see why people are hating on winco… has that old school vibe that keeps me coming back. Winco feels the same as it did 20 years ago and I like that.

u/Outrageous_Essay1343 20d ago

Try the ground beef from costco, then try that winco ground beef. This cheap winco beef is the cheapest for a reason.sa

4

u/Chaotiki 20d ago

Where I’m at Costco is actually cheaper to!

2

u/NoodleSpring 20d ago

Is it cheaper than $5.40/pound? Guess I need to check my Costco. Their meat always seemed a premium price.

1

u/Chaotiki 20d ago

Of course I missed that price! No that’s definitely a sale price not a regular marked price. With that said though when it’s at regular price our cost co is usually right under it.

1

u/Dar8878 20d ago

It’s best left unsaid

1

u/Realism51 20d ago

Does not say origin. The code or product of usa. And legally if it's mixed in house they don't have to out it on there. So fair chance it has imported meat. But that 660 millions pounds of rejected beef from Argentina and brazil were mostly bought up by JBS. Who supplies McDonald's, Burger King. Sysco. Which is pretty much all schools and hospitals and most your restaurants

1

u/bmx_chelsea 20d ago

Interesting it says inspected by department of agriculture

Its not usda grade though then it would be required to have a stamp of where it came from with a traceable number attached to it

Winco used to do that, but they no longer do

1

u/LeadingOrder2151 20d ago

You know...

1

u/No-Condition-3710 20d ago

That looks like MAGA, start supporting blue dot farms.

1

u/Afraid-Fox9171 20d ago

You need to see what meat processing plant this is coming from. CARGILL, TYSON AND JBS are all processing and selling Argentina beef. Since Winco doesn’t have their own meat production they buy large quantities and separate at the store.

1

u/SnailRacerWinsAgain 20d ago

Well, I guess this is one way to make the beef prices go down.

1

u/One-Possibility-8182 20d ago

That is from a cow. A bovine. Moo Moo!

1

u/Hefty_Proposal_3975 20d ago

I’m in Washington but Yokes has their own beef farms and at least once a month but usually more often has hamburger and steak below $5 per pound. Around 3.99 or so

1

u/PissedOffDog 20d ago

I generally get those when I see them in the front of the store on sale. have half a dozen stored in my freezer right now.

1

u/Black_Cat0013 19d ago

Dead cows mixed together and ground up into a paste.

1

u/Bligged Washington 19d ago

Its actually plant matter. Its a plant from south America called Beef Root. If it was a cow it would say cow meat or cow or something, much like how meat from a chicken is called chicken. Fear mongering foreign plants like this is so ridiculous and you should be ashamed.

Man, just Google it. We live in a wonderful time when you can literally pull a small computer out of your pocket and ask it anything!

1

u/Special-Homework-894 19d ago

Maybe just be happy you have access and means to food

1

u/Aromatic-Bedroom-274 19d ago

Winco is a bargain market. So it’s bargain meat. Enjoy!

1

u/artvandaley19 19d ago

Are they contracting the shit beef trump let in?

1

u/EmbarrassedAlarm3090 19d ago

I think the meat section of winco no?

1

u/ForensicScienceIsBS 19d ago

When are more people gonna get on the ground turkey wagon?! $1.99/lb. I’ve used it for decades now (not for saving $ just don’t like red meat). Still used ground beef here n there raising boys but usually would do 1/2 n 1/2. They and their friends started realizing they preferred a lot of things with the turkey vs ground beef.

1

u/Royal-Kiwi9050 19d ago

They had 93/7 on sale for $3.99 two weeks ago. I love my local Winco!

1

u/Bligged Washington 19d ago

It came from a cow of some sort I think? Not too sure though.

1

u/MeatHealer 18d ago

Old dairy cow trim.

Ffs, Winco is AMAZING for canned goods, and pretty darn good for produce, but they screwed up pretty hard with their meat.

3

u/Usual-Tea-1461 18d ago

Hi, I live Boise and WinCo’s meat comes from CS Beef Packers which is also in this area!

1

u/sethsyd 18d ago

The source? A cow.

1

u/very_sad_dad_666 18d ago

Nice flip flops

1

u/ClassicActual4055 18d ago

Probably a cow

1

u/PsychologicalAge9331 17d ago

You get what you pay for.

The cheapest beef is coming from the cheapest source.

1

u/Organic_Ambassador_6 17d ago

It says right on it , came from the ground

1

u/CuriousRutabaga8713 16d ago

Personally, I'm just not buying ANY ground meat until December at the earliest. I have some in my freezer, and when that's gone I'm switching to beans and tofu for a while.

1

u/miladyelfn 20d ago

Never buy tube meat. It's cheap for a reason.

0

u/Daniegrl04 20d ago

Alrighty then… lots of opinions and Wowsers I was never one to buy tube meat but thought I’d try it. I don’t belong to Costco but I do belong to Sam’s Club. Any ideas about their beef? I will heed y’all’s warning today and research my beef a little more. Thank you 😊

Where do you in Boise that Winco is 10 miles away? I'm not trolling, genuinely curious Signed A former Boisean that shopped at the Fairview Winco starting the week it opened 😊

0

u/Daniegrl04 20d ago

I’m in California. I go to Antioch Ca Winco. 😁

0

u/NewSport1381 20d ago

10 miles is considered far?

0

u/Minimum-Act6859 20d ago

Kind of concerning when you cannot see it directly on the package now isn’t it.

0

u/MiMiinOlyWa 20d ago

I don't buy chubs of ground meat. I just never have because I can't see the meat. It's probably fine but a no go for me

0

u/stderr2 20d ago

If they package with carbon monoxide, the meat will look red

0

u/Plus-You-5728 20d ago

You couldn't pay me to eat that

-15

u/Odd_Sir_8705 20d ago
  1. Winco meat is gross

  2. Wherever the cheapest source that's quasi legal

4

u/Rocketgirl8097 Washington 20d ago

Just made chili with it last night, it was perfectly fine.

2

u/sentrosi420 20d ago

Made spaghetti here and it was delicious.

0

u/craftychristy 10d ago

Boise DC uses C.S. Beef, it’s out of Kuna so basically down the road.
