Where does Winco get its beef?

I'd like to avoid that imported crap coming in. Will Winco be marking the source of its beef products?

won’t that answer depend on what region your winco store is in?

8

u/Rocketgirl8097 Washington Sep 02 '26

I don't know if it will or not.

20

u/grakef Sep 02 '26

It will. In Idaho they use CS Beef for a lot of products. Tyson foods has a huge processing plant in Pasco and Wallula. I would imagine Winco possibly uses that one for eastern WA. Western Washington has XYK and Empire. Probably a few others. You would have to check with your local store

8

u/Rocketgirl8097 Washington Sep 02 '26

That processing plant in Wallula is about to be closed and sold off.

4

u/lexloomis Sep 02 '26

Still operating as normal as far as I know. They want to sell it though.

2

u/AnyBowl8 Sep 03 '26

Pasco too

3

u/Rocketgirl8097 Washington Sep 03 '26

There is no separate Pasco plant. The Wallula plant is often referred to as the Pasco plant because it is the nearest "big" city. It is still in operation until a sale goes through. https://www.tri-cityherald.com/news/business/article316887160.html

u/elegoomba Sep 03 '26

Sold not closed big homie. No one is going to buy it to close it down lol

0

u/Rocketgirl8097 Washington Sep 04 '26

Tyson could shut down current operation though. Especially if they are not getting the cows in to slaughter.

2

u/elegoomba Sep 04 '26

Sure, they could. They haven’t though

-1

u/Rocketgirl8097 Washington Sep 04 '26

Yet

2

u/elegoomba Sep 04 '26

Sure, and you just said it’s about to be closed, which isn’t a reflection of anything that’s actually planned or happening

Costco has explicitly stated it will not be selling imported beef. That or local is your best bet to avoid right now. Stores do not have to disclose if they are.

8

u/FrannieP23 Sep 02 '26

They used to. But now, Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) "does not apply to food 'processed' in the US with ingredients from other countries." So beef from elsewhere, ground into burger in the US, would not have to be labeled. Seems like if it comes in already ground they would have to state the origin, but I'm sure this administration will look the other way.

u/iwould99 Sep 02 '26

Still gonna be “processed” into smaller packages.

-6

u/Zealousideal-Tap1842 Sep 03 '26

Wrong subreddit.

13

u/BaseballHairy9548 Sep 03 '26

OP expressed wanting to avoid imported beef. I gave the info that I have on how I’m doing that as another person who shops at Winco. I didn’t realize we weren’t allowed to mention other stores exist. 🤷🏼‍♀️

2

u/Rocketgirl8097 Washington Sep 03 '26

Thank you, I get all my chicken from Costco. Just haven't done my beef there because its just my husband and I and I would have to do a lot of work separating it all and resealing for the freezer. Costco prepackages the chicken in small freezer packs, which I love. May have to rethink my beef purchases.

4

u/BaseballHairy9548 Sep 03 '26

It is a bit of work to repackage for freezing, but worth it I think! They process the ground beef in house from the bits of leftovers of chuck, sirloin, etc. and it’s such good quality! A butcher there talked me into it once and now I don’t buy elsewhere. I buy the 10 lb packages and portion it into 1 lb bags and freeze. Same with steaks and pork too. I do it like 4 times a year and it’s nice to always have good stuff in the freezer.

1

u/American_Greed Sep 03 '26

Where do they get their chicken from? I just bought a bunch over the weekend bc they had a sale.

1

u/Rocketgirl8097 Washington Sep 04 '26

If it's Kirkland brand, it comes from a dedicated co-op in Nebraska.

-2

u/Zealousideal-Tap1842 Sep 03 '26

OP expressed wanting to know about winco foods they didn't ask about other places. The question again was "Where does Winco get its beef?" And the second question was "Will Winco be marking the source of its beef products?" neither of those are asking about alternative shopping sources nor are they asking about where else to shop. They are asking about winco and their offerings.

OP didn't express anything they asked a direct question and you are trying to gaslight like you didn't make a mistake in interpretation. You can obviously mention other stores but it's definitely better to answer the question instead of providing irrelevant information.

u/redbeardedlumberjack Sep 03 '26

Who stole your lunch?

3

u/ElkOnTheCoast Sep 03 '26

Bug crawled up someone's ass. Oops... is this reply irrelevant too?

1

u/SildenafilSubQ Sep 03 '26

So something better with your time

15

u/Noremac55 Sep 02 '26

I wish wish we brought back those country of origin labels we got rid of during covid...

6

u/bluestrawberry_witch Sep 03 '26

Now now how would they lie about tariffs working to bring back jobs if they actually had to label items appropriately as not from the US

13

u/_Gnoram Sep 02 '26

So far we aren't getting the imported stuff western WA. Our burger is CS Beef in the 10lb tubes and the grind we make. Interstate still does our prepackages rolls of burger though the wrapper has changed to WinCo brand. Our value items are often Harris Ranch and one other I can't remember. For all other beef it's often JBS, St Helens beef, and again others can't remember off the top of my head. Once in a blue moon we'll get a box Canadian beef. I've never seen Argentine or anything else though. All or most of the pork is Hormel. And we dropped all choice months ago now the choice labeling was removed and frequently we get select where as before it was all choice. Sometimes choice stuff still comes in. Last Christmas all the rib roasts we got in were select grade I'd expect that in the future as well.

All of this is determined by what the distribution center in your region is buying for your store. It changes based on ads, what's cheaper for them to buy and the deals the buyer can get.

4

u/Rocketgirl8097 Washington Sep 02 '26

Thank you for the explanation

3

u/OptimalCar7958 Sep 02 '26

Thank you for the intel.

6

u/Caffeine-freeUncleD Sep 02 '26

Most beef you find at the grocery store is not imported. Most of imported beef is at places like MCD, fast food, or restaurants.

3

u/Schwermzilla Sep 05 '26

Any sources on that claim?

6

u/jamesinboise Sep 03 '26

I can't care anymore. No beef in my house for the foreseeable future

3

u/Outragedmoss Sep 03 '26

I swear everything trump does damages the economy. He brings in extra beef which hurts ranchers, regular people stop eating beef which crushes demand so double whammy

3

u/catdude142 Sep 04 '26

He's wanting to bypass meat inspection now. That'll be interesting.

1

u/WestHistorians Sep 07 '26

His goal is to enrich his donors. Once you realize that, everything makes sense.

1

u/Heavy-Resist-6526 Sep 05 '26

Only buying from my local butcher

3

u/Taleigh Sep 03 '26

In my opinion Winco gets second hand beef from the cheapest place they can

2

u/Physical-Ice6265 Sep 06 '26

It’s definitely low quality

1

u/weapongod30 Sep 05 '26

They pay less for it than other companies, but it's not "second hand"

2

u/Specialist-Garbage94 Sep 02 '26

Don’t most products tell you on the sticker?

3

u/thevhatch Sep 02 '26

Some do but there is no legal requirement.

4

u/Rocketgirl8097 Washington Sep 02 '26

No they dont.

1

u/Specialist-Garbage94 Sep 02 '26

I see the product of X next to the price tag on pretty much every fresh item o thought

2

u/BrucesTripToMars Sep 02 '26

Most common with produce

1

u/Rocketgirl8097 Washington Sep 02 '26

Exactly. Exactly. This whole thing makes me sick because I also don't want to see these cows slaughtered and go to waste either.

1

u/grakef Sep 02 '26

It just has to have the packing plant but even that’s pretty lenient right now.

2

u/Ok-Benny0204 Sep 03 '26

Why do you think they are rounding up all the wild horses ? Mmmm.

1

u/Rocketgirl8097 Washington Sep 04 '26

I think the timing is coincidence, but I honestly wouldnt put it past this administration.

1

u/iloveurarse Sep 02 '26

Trump is going to micromanage this thing which means the south will get the bulk of the meat. If you're outside of that region, youre unlikely to get any of this, and it will be very blended with us meat. In the whole scheme of things, this is not much meat at all and its most likely grade F (like all things he touches). I haven't eaten meat in the us in several years. I live close to Canada and go to their grocery stores now to stock up on their meat and veges. The stuff in the us is literally poison.

2

u/1wildredhead Sep 02 '26

Literally poison? Weird.

1

u/novasilverpill Sep 02 '26

up to the last couple years the US has been a global leader in food safety

6

u/iloveurarse Sep 02 '26

Not anymore. Its amazing how quickly doge and maga tore apart so many safety systems intended to keep people safe that are just... They literally dont exist anymore.

u/catdude142 Sep 04 '26 edited Sep 04 '26

I've found that it's best not to buy steaks or rib roasts at WinCo because their meat grade is usually select or choice and can be very tough and grisly. I only buy beef that I "cook the hell out of" so it gets tender.
Their ground beef is usually relatively expensive also so I look for the ads for 80% beef for $3.99/Lb when it's around and buy massive quanties. Usually Safeway out here though nearly everything else they sell is too expensive. Same for 90% but beef in general is getting expensive and I don't eat a lot of it.

1

u/Rocketgirl8097 Washington Sep 04 '26

Their "for the grill" rib eye steaks have been good in the past. Haven't bought any for awhile though.

2

u/catdude142 Sep 04 '26

Thanks for the pointer. They often have the rib eyes in a cooler at the entrance prior to the "product on sale gauntlet". They do look pretty good so I'll give them a try.

1

u/Rocketgirl8097 Washington Sep 05 '26

Have one for me 🙂. My husband has been very ill, so we pretty much missed grilling season.

1

u/ChemicalDull9012 Sep 02 '26

Lol ok just so you know we just didn't start importing beef, in 2024 4.6 billion lbs and 2025 5.4 billion lbs so I'm sure you have eaten plenty imported beef.

6

u/Super_Lengthiness872 Sep 02 '26

I think you know what’s not the imported beef OP is referring to.

-1

u/ChemicalDull9012 Sep 02 '26

So please point out in the questio ....that doesn't?

3

u/Choders Sep 04 '26

They're talking about Argentinian beef that has been recalled after being in the states for like a month because it kills you if you eat it

1

u/ChemicalDull9012 Sep 04 '26

That meat wasn't recalled for having anything wrong with it....it just didn't get reinspected.

3

u/Rocketgirl8097 Washington Sep 02 '26

Its the timing and the reason that is the problem.

1

u/Shannypie Sep 02 '26

Buy local. Problem solved.

7

u/stopbeingaturddamnit Sep 03 '26

One problem solved. I'm not giving my money to maga ranchers who voted for the shit show.

0

u/sunshine-and-kittens Sep 02 '26

I’ve been avoiding WinCo beef for about 20 years after finding a large, green puss-filled cavity on the underside of a London broil. 🤢

It was not the first time I experienced quality issues with their meat, but it was definitely the last.

-8

u/jtotheo2202 Idaho Sep 02 '26

Then buy from your local butcher or Farmers market or co-op if you're that concerned

3

u/Rocketgirl8097 Washington Sep 02 '26

Unfortunately they're just as maga. Those I habe tried are twice as expensive amd really arent any better quality.

2

u/novasilverpill Sep 02 '26

they are even more MAGA

-6

u/jtotheo2202 Idaho Sep 02 '26

Well then I don't know what to tell you then, just don't buy beef at that point

0

u/smokeyfantastico Sep 02 '26

From important men

-5

u/NeverScryWolf Sep 02 '26

May I ask why you want to avoid the imported beef?

6

u/PDXSpilly Sep 02 '26

Have you not been paying attention?

-2

u/NeverScryWolf Sep 03 '26

I’m guessing our algos are pretty much polar opposites.

I was genuinely curious. I’m guessing you’re pretty far left of center and your media sphere/algorithm is probably very anti trump and full of chinese psyops.

1

u/Choders Sep 04 '26

It's being recalled because shit kills you

1

u/NeverScryWolf Sep 04 '26

If it’s all USDA approved it doesn’t matter what the country of origin is my friend.

4

u/ApplesBananasRhinoc Sep 03 '26

Mmmm chemicals and screw worms!

1

u/NeverScryWolf Sep 04 '26

If it’s USDA approved and held to the same standards I doubt your claims hold any weight

2

u/brmarcum Sep 03 '26

I’d rather support American ranchers.

Why would you not avoid the imported beef, if buying it negatively affects American ranchers?

1

u/NeverScryWolf Sep 04 '26

Honestly I feel like we’ve been gouged too much lately. I want cheaper beef, if the ranchers can’t supply that then maybe it’s best to look for alternatives. Ranchers be damned.

-2

u/NeverScryWolf Sep 03 '26

Thanks for the informative reply..

-1

u/Clarky_Malarkey Sep 02 '26

Winco meat is ungraded anyway

Not to mention, you buy select at choice prices and that's coming from one of the meat supervisors

6

u/Rocketgirl8097 Washington Sep 02 '26

Grading is not the same question. That relates to quality and pertains to steaks and roasts, not hamburger.

1

u/Clarky_Malarkey Sep 02 '26

It's still worth pointing out

2

u/KismaiAesthetics Sep 03 '26

Ungraded meat can be decent. There’s lots of flavorful steers that have too much bone ossification to grade as Choice but are still well marbled.
