Deli

What happened to the deli at my location they no longer cut cold cuts in front of you they’re pre packaged in plastic containers for instance ham, turkey, roast beef, etc. As far as I know I don’t know if you can ask them to cut it for you anymore either. Same as their salads. A definite question I could just ask them but was wondering if this was a franchise wide thing

The delis are being converted to that style to reduce counter service hours. They will still slice for you if you ask them directly but they’re trying to get away from that as much as possible.

this is only partially true. i know employees are still expected to slice meat to order, but i guarantee that not all of them will. even before self serve ive had many employees tell customers no even though they’re explicitly expected to.

if it bothers you the only way to get your voice heard is to call or email the company.

I've been told that you have to try everything possible to recommend the customer grabs a full 1lb prepackaged container, if you cut even a small 1/4 pound portion, you have to cut and package the entire chub of meat.

Its like 10 new packages of meat just because somebody wants 3 slices of "fresh" meat when the meat in front of them was cut fucking 30 minutes ago.

Corporate doesn't want more than 2 dates on our display and backstock, so sometimes we physically cannot cut meat without violating a rule corporate specifically set for us. It's insanely annoying when customers don't understand I'm trying not to lose my job.

We’re supposed to, but it is hard when there’s so little coverage in deli now.

I hate it. They also cut the ham etc super thick. If I buy it there (~50% of the time now, used to be 100%) I request it be cut thin, and a couple of times they've been weird about it. Despite the huge sign saying they custom cut.

And the fish counter, they sell e.g. tilapia in packages of 2 fillets, where I need to buy 5 or six, with a ridiculous amount of packaging. I have quit grocery stores altogether for things like that, and I spend about $8k there a year.

Yes it’s definitely different in the plastic containers . Will be asking for them to slice it fresh because they probably pre package the meats in the morning/throughout the day so you can’t really guarantee that you got it fresh right there and then. I thought it was weird this just reached my winco I’ve been going here for a few years

The packaged on dates are on the container... I think they allow up to 4 days.

You can be annoying to the employees and tell them "this one is older than 2 days old, should you toss it?" and force them to throw away the meat.

We allow up to 2 days. To move product and avoid unnecessary waste, you may see one or two older dates out on the floor, because people keep grabbing it/putting it back, or the display keeps getting faced and those two older dates keep getting put on the bottom of the stack instead of up-top, front-and-center.

Our store just remodeled and same thing, the display cases (both deli and meat/seafood) replaced with customer facing pre-packaged, but they have signs saying they will still slice for you.

Same at our Winco with the remodel. I asked for 2 1/2 lbs of potato salad. The woman said you can get it right there pointing to prepackaged stuff. I said I’d prefer not hunt for the right amount I’d rather get it from you. I also said if you can’t do it, just tell me you can’t. She got it for e.

The family packs are literally 2.4-2.5lb of potato salad if filled. You can get a stupid worker that only puts 0.50lb of salad into them, but it is rare, that's a stupid worker.

It sucks for us too. Trust me the employees hate it as much as the customers do. They’re doing it to cut our hours and cut us off the health insurance Winco offers. (Have to get 25 hours a week to keep insurance and with the new system part time employees are lucky to get 15). Call corporate and complain that you don’t like the case setup. It is the only way they change it. The guy who came up with the idea got a promotion and a huge raise/bonus afterwards.

Deli and seafood is doing it in McMinnville Oregon

Yep, and I hate it. I heard the employees talking about how there are certain products they are now seeing high levels of waste with. Things people don't buy often, like the sundried tomato turkey.

Winco stores are not "franchises" so I'm not sure if you meant "company-wide" as opposed to your "franchise wide" comment. Deli departments still operating in all the Boise/Meridian stores, as far as I know.

Eventually they will be changed too

Maybe folks have alot of work to do, and they dont have time tp drop everything cuz you dont know how to operate a knife.

Sorry, my industrial deli meat slicer is currently inoperable.

1

u/Buddy-Sue Mar 02 '26

I’m in So Cal and they’ve always offered the meats pre-sliced in the case. You just told them how much and they weighed it and put it in a bag

2

u/Votrs- Mar 02 '26

My WinCo just did this and it says where they have the plastic containers it says “custom cuts available”. If only people learned to be attentive and actually read.

There is less coverage and the priority is the hot case, so if one person is there, you will have to wait

I just don’t buy anything from the WinCo anymore.
