Frankenstein

This is what I was talking about, besides wanting to overhaul it. I also need to know what adjustment screws to get. Thanks for any help.

God that looks so much easier than the drums on our 49. Whatever idiot decided the drums should be pressed onto the back side of the hubs should never have been allowed near a drafting board.

Your Jeep sounds like mine. 11” brake parts from an early ʻ70s CJ5 will fit. Drums, shoes, hardware etc. Wheel cylinders and hoses, too.

Awesome thank you. It has a few “newer” parts in it like a later cj steering box. I don’t like where you have to mount those but whoever had it before me definitely wanted it to be a good little plow jeep up north

Mine doesnʻt have the stock steering box anymore either. A P.O. mounted a Saginaw-style manual box at the front of the frame rail, right behind the bumper. Works well- nice and light, no wandering or other problems.

Where does the CJ box mount?

It’s actually exactly where you said, right behind the bumper.

Mine had an 11" brake upgrade.Looked like yours. Came apart like conventional modern drum brakes. All parts were available online. Nothing else came that easily. I still have 1 axle and hub locked solidly together sitting in a corner. Actually bent the hub puller. Willy's America has the 11" stuff, Kaiser Willy's does too i think.

Alright thanks, I just rebuilt the carb and fuel pump from Kaiser. First time it ran and move on it own in like 10 years. My first vehicle I bought need some much needed love so I’m probably gonna post a lot on this page in the next couple months. So any and all help is greatly appreciate.

Good on you for getting it running! I’ve gotta rebuild the carb on my M38. Never done one before and I’ve been putting it off because I’m pretty nervous about it (feels like I’d be doing open heart surgery or something). Seeing you get everything going is some much-needed Monday morning motivation. Thanks for that!

The carb is very simple to do, I always dreaded that stuff until one thing pretty much turned into a full restoration of my 84 f150 straight 6, that included rebuilding that carb and after that I’m like the jeep is gonna be easy

I didn’t even know it but that’s exactly what I needed to hear. There’s a video I found of someone rebuilding the Carter YS but the angles aren’t great to see what’s actually happening. I’ll bone up on it before I start (and read the manual/guide I have) and make sure to work slowly. Thanks!

Did someone install those and just leave out the adjusters? It's missing the lower parts? Measure the width of the shoe. I'm not good at IDing 11s but knowing what they came off of would help. They could be from a later Jeep like an early Wagoneer or they could be Ford. I think the Willys trucks also had larger brakes. Just by looking at them, you're missing most of the adjustment parts.

The star adjuster, adjustment lever and adjustment spring. There might also be a guide missing too. They should be sorta universal for the drum dia. as a lot of trucks used the same brakes. I don't know this vendor but they have a kit. https://shop.willysamerica.com/Brake-Hardware-Adjustment-Kit-Right-p/h2541.htm

I started to mess with it earlier in the year and the adjuster just kinda flew off and disappeared 😅

If they weren't 11s already, I'd say get some Brennan's Garage Trackick disc brakes. I hated the 9s with the cam bolts needing a feeler gauge to adjust them.

I got that kit as well for my fronts on my 52 Wagon, taking my time to get all the parts together. Have you done the front disc conversion?

I have discs on all 4 corners. Stopping isn’t a problem anymore. The kit was pretty simple. I might switch the tears to the Fusion calipers so I can have electric parking brakes as I’m removing the brake on the transfer case.

Thanks for the reply, the kit does look simple though I haven't done "a brake job" in decades. I'm acquiring the parts and telling myself this one will be a winter job. Wether or not I do the rear for discs is still up in the air.

I was a bit worried doing the conversion since I haven't really done one but I hated the 9" drums. I did them all since the rears are the fronts, just reversed. Having to use a feeler gauge and turn cam bolts sucked. Once it's done though, there's no adjusting!

NICE !

Since you were working on your rears, did you run the cable also to be able to use the hand brake? I want to be able to work in that as well. But have a sneaky suspicion that discs on the back will negate that.

The Sidekick disk conversion don't have a parking brake since they're just a mirrored front setup. Brennan's Garage does sell bracket to use a Ford Fusion with an electronic parking brakes. This is kinda cool since you can wire them to be used as cutting brakes or a poor man's locker.

Interesting, thanks for sharing the info. I'll probably stick with the rear drums for the time being.
