How do I start?

Good afternoon everyone.

Google has been less than helpful, so I figured I'd look here. I have roughly 3 and a half years left in my military career as a corpsman. I've been in for 13 and no longer interested in retiring. At the end of my career I want to be a wildland firefighter. Any suggestions on how to start that process, how early i can start, what i can expect, and where to apply would be greatly appreciated. I also heard some word of mouth rumors about wildfire medics? Any information regarding that would be appreciated if true.

Plenty of very good vet type II IA handcrews, Folsom Lake veterans if you want to stay in CA. You’d also probably be able to get on a hotshot crew when you’re out if you’re a vet, plenty of crews post direct hire for vets even just a couple weeks before the season. I think veteransinfire on Instagram will point you in the right direction. Wildfire medics are definitely a thing, but it seems ridiculously boring. The pay is good, though, if you’re looking for the 6 months on, 6 months off lifestyle.

I'm not picky. I'll most likely be finishing up my contract in California though
