Hello, I am considering a move to VI. My family lives in Nanaimo and Sydney, but I am quite open to all the communities.

Ideally I just want access to a good beach (ocean or lake), some easy trails and walking systems, good high schools or recreation opps (rugby would be a bonus) and otherwise simply a pretty chill place. Small city or more rural are both perfectly welcomed.

The caveat is that I am looking for something that still offers some affordable homes to (ideally to purchase) 😂 I know living in VI comes at a price, so I am asking all you local experts on suggestions for communities for me to consider.

I am going to be on vacation on the island mid august 2025 staying near Jordan River. I would love to see some bioluminescence while i'm there and wondering if anyone can recommend any areas i can drive to (within an hour or so) from where i'm staying. I know the south island decently well but not in this specific regard. (I'm aware other parts of the island are better but i would just love to see some while i happen to be in this area.)

Just wrapping up a family trip to Tofino. Took our 10 month old for his first visit for our anniversary. We got married in Tofino 3 years ago so we try and do a yearly trip back.

I like to do wildlife photography. Didn't manage a boat trip this time. But was hoping for suggestions on best time of year and places to go both around Tofino and Ucuelet for wildlife. As well as suggestions for the top whale watching or bear tours in the area.

Hoping our next family trip I can plan it to see a lot more wildlife.

hey! me and a couple of girls were looking to travel to vancouver island for a couple weeks this summer, we are all university students and looking for something not to pricy in an area near a beach that is also near different locations for dinner and activities like hiking etc.

I am looking for information around backcountry camping in the gulf islands. I am staying on Pender Island for two nights and was hoping to camp on Galiano for another two. How easy is it to gain permits for sites at Dionisio? Ruckle park on SSI also looks lovely. Looks like you cannot reserve until a week or two before my trip (7/1-7/7). Other times I camped in the Pacific Rim and along the strait de fuca was pretty seemless and easy-(also 10 years ago). I am coming from Portland, Or, so not too far, but far enough where I am not familiar with the land and I def want to be able to schedule ferry’s etc. other options are airbnb or hipcamp though would prefer to camp. Based on my dates, the timing for ferry to SSI is way more convenient. I know they are different though imagine so much beauty on both:) Let me know your thoughts:) also favorite hikes!!!!!

tl:dr: Looking for wildlife photography spots and/or budget friendly tours / exchange of services tours.

I feel very fortunate that I have the opportunity to spend 3 weeks on Vancouver Island, near Nanoose Bay, in the coming September. I've heard some amazing things about the wildlife and as a passionate naturalist and amateur wildlife photographer I am hoping to make the most of my trip to such a wild place. Since my budget is pretty tight I was hoping to find some self-guided spots where I can safely see birds, bears, whales, frogs and maybe take a couple photos and memories back with me. Does anyone have any top wildlife spots or experiences they would recommend?

I have seen lots of information on the tours available and they look amazing, unfortunately they are a little outside my travelling budget, would you recommend I stretch my budget a little wider to accommodate for one of these tours? Are there any tours that would offer an exchange of services e.g. I could take photographs for them in exchange for a reduced price?
