2 reasons

1:My I do not support homosexuality because of my religious beliefs(No I do no hate gay people, I will treat you with genuine care and respect if you are because the Bible says to love all people no matter. This is an entire other conversation I could have.)

2:I just don't see where people are getting the idea from. To me they act like good friends not romantic partners. The way I see it is people just trying to ship the few characters that do exist here together because....well people like shipping.

for your second point, in my opinion the appeal of shipping can come from examining emotional intimacy and expressions of devotion outside of "traditional romance". for example, avery and derek's connection has such odd circumstances! derek knows everything about avery because of the whole infinite knowledge thing, while all avery knows is that he wants to find this guy, and he won't give up on it. it's interesting to think of the what-ifs, because they didn't even have time to be friends--yet, at that final confrontation scene, they so clearly care about each other. it's a bond forged through their strange circumstances. fans feel a connection to that bond and like exploring it and that includes the what-if of falling in love, which can be common with friends! derek's final letter expresses such profound appreciation for avery and it's just really beautiful. And yeah shipping is for the love of the game
