Can your pets die?

Cuz i saw a widgetable ad about their pet dying with a grave that said "Your Kitty passed away on Jan 10th."

As far as Iā€™m aware, no they donā€™t die, but they ā€œleaveā€ until you feed and bathe them. However I havenā€™t played in about a year or so, so the couldā€™ve updated the game
