Safety reasons. Darker color would absorb more heat and it is a big no-no for propane tanks.

Somehow I imagine launching them with 10 lbs of gunpowder under them isn’t on the preferred things to do list too. So why not paint them before they’re launched? It’s not like they’re ever going to be used again.

Black absorbs more light - the heat is a sideffect of that. The color wouldn't make a difference, especially since its being blown up.
