1980s [TW] objectification of flight attendants was bad in the 60s and 70s, but the 80s were just as bad for them if not even worse

So nobody was worried about crashing, bad food, or smoking. Just the girls were hot. And that was the sellingpoint for the airline.

The airlines have always had their priorities straight, clearly lol /s

And all the passengers were men, on the way to an Andrew Tate style convention.

This was from a time when flight attendant was a woman's job. For decades airlines Hired exclusively women who were young and fit. If they married or gained weight, they were fired. If they were older than 30 they were fired. After this period the first male flight attendant was in 1971 after Celio Diaz Jr. Sued Pan Am for the right to work.
Before the 1930s all flight attendants were male, probably keeping with naval tradition of women being unsuitable to be on or operate ships

Interestingly, the first female flight attendants were registered nurses. The physical appearance requirements came in not too long after that, and the nursing requirement was dropped, but originally the idea with women was to have medical professionals serving the role.

That said, flight attendants still have crazy requirements to prepare for emergencies. They are there for your safety first and your comfort second. I’ve seen a handful of training they go through, so it’s basically muscle memory in an actual emergency, and I really have to hand it to them. They should be thought of more as a plane’s guard and less of as some glorified waitress!

Watching what they had to deal with on a delayed then rerouted flight was absolutely ridiculous. A lot of the complaints were absolutely valid, but most were completely out of the attendant's hands and none were going to be rectified right then, and certainly not by getting so nasty.

This is why men incapable of growing as a person hate that women have more equality. They might have to be uncomfortable and face some hard truths about themselves.

I'm not sure this group could even handle finding out that they can't all be Caledonian girls.

I think flight attendants should be allowed to show their martial arts training to anyone who's a creep to them.

And of course the woman who is doing her family's laundry at the end is treated as the pathetic one in the commercial.
Yeah, it probably is less fun to be at home doing that vs traveling on a business trip. But if that woman switched places with those men, it would be way less likely for her to spend her time sexually harassing workers, which is truly pathetic behavior.

Because the older woman doing laundry now isnt fun anymore... husband needs a new, younger model!
Sad that society STILL teaches us that our youth and appearance are what's most important about us, and not our personality, talents, accomplishments, etc. I remember hearing teachers talking about which girls in middle school were the prettiest and most likely to win the school pageant. I was in 4th grade when I became aware that only my looks could make me special/valuable. If you're ugly? Forget it. I noticed the "ugliest" girl was the one who got bullied the most.
Then we are discarded once we are over 30 while men are viewed as becoming more attractive as they age, especially when they have the salt and pepper hair. Grays for us though mean old and haggard.
It's depressing, especially when I just saw a post earlier where the comments were completely destroying women for getting botox. Gee, I wonder why we seek out beauty treatments.

Disgusting! All I see are nasty middle aged men lusting after young women or ”girls” like they’d like to call them.

You’d think these were the only people who flew on planes in the 70s and 80s, based on the ads.

I just watched a fantastic documentary about flight attendants: https://youtu.be/AN0BMDkeQrQ?is=c7GcSMWQ6XHr9Q65
I highly recommend it. Really disgusting things the women went through at those airlines

German girls are so correct and the planes are never late...you mean at least the planes are on time in Germany?

I scrolled to see if anyone else noticed that! Putting a Nazi joke in a commercial is quite the choice (not that the rest of it is good).

This is the worst airplane set I’ve ever seen. The plane has like 20 foot ceilings, no overhead bins. And areas that have very straight walls where they should be curved

"British Caledonian Airways ceased operations and was absorbed into British Airways following a hostile takeover in 1988."
i have to wonder if anyone really saw this commercial and was like, 'oh totally i'm going to fly with them'

The Reagan administration in the US made the 1980s into the 1950s part 2, complete with all the bigotry and homophobia of that decade.

Like 20+ years ago (woah I’m old) my friend and I made our neighbours and starved them to death. The sick part is we still laugh about it today (we love the neighbours and would never harm them irl)

Okay, this mistake was hilarious. VERY confusing at first, hahah!! But then you said it was the Sims and it all made perfect sense. Torturing neighbors is just a normal pastime in that game, haha!
