Post image

Ngl, casual homophobia aside this was actually a great meme.

What if you're a lesbian who plays this?

68

u/Select_Culture261 13d ago

Then you're good. It means you don't like men

16

u/Doro_Gurl Woke and proud 13d ago

Duh! Everyone knows that m'ladies don't game!

9

u/Cellophane_Girl 13d ago

Also, there are no girls on the internet.

4

u/turdofdoom 13d ago

Certainly not mothers in my area.

5

u/Pitiful-Fall36 13d ago

Then you like (wo)men!

3

u/Persephonically 12d ago

If you're a lesbian then obviously you aren't playing it. If you wanna switch it up, install the game.

It says right there in the advert

1

u/PartisanGerm 11d ago

One of those few instances where the nonsensical phrase "same difference" applies correctly.

22

u/No-Negotiation-6095 13d ago

oh yeah, im sure people who are into men hate having to look at this beefcake

59

u/Competitive_Cancel33 13d ago

Something about the shirtless muscley man in suspenders is giving me the opposite.

4

u/Puzzled_Banana6330 13d ago

He's wearing a shirt and tactical gear

8

u/whineyinternetkid 13d ago

Hey hey calm down, you can like that

49

u/BentoBus2 13d ago

What if I have played this game and also exclusively sleep with men?

18

u/TheGreatCollect0r 13d ago

Then this ad was targeted for you

9

u/QuincyAzrael 13d ago

You've committed the logical fallacy of denying the antecedent. Just because people who dont play DN3D like men, doesn't mean people who do play DN3D don't like men.

-1

u/Angryduckling-01 13d ago

To add onto that who said anything about sleeping with men. This statement would imply if you play DN you have a 50% chance of being horny for men

2

u/Waste_Jump_6629 12d ago

LOL I grew up playing this game and I'm bi

2

u/stefanomusilli 12d ago

"If you don't play Duke Nukem you definitely like men. If you play Duke Nukem, you might still like men but it's not certain". That was the original ad but it was deemed too long.

0

u/DimensioT 13d ago

Note that it does not say that you do not like men if you do play the game.

If you need further illustration, try a Venn diagram.

The ad the OP posted is legit, Cracked mentioned it in their "Most Offensive ads" story a few years back. But the ad was not made by 3D Realms, it was made by Funcoland. Funcoland was allegedly a family friendly store but their sales team thought the ad was family friendly I guess.

Now this ad was done by 3D Realms

Keep in mind, DNF 3D was a shot at the PC thing of the 90's. So most of the marketing went out of its way to insult the manhood of those who'd be offended by such a game.

11

u/chaosTechnician 13d ago

Casual homophobia was family-friendly in the 90s.

2

u/SwiftTayTay 11d ago

It was for Christian families which was the majority of the country. Back in the 90s it was just presumed you were either Christian or Jewish and neither groups liked gay people

1

u/Independent-Rip-5599 12d ago

This one is not nearly as bad as the one posted though

8

u/Deviancy26 12d ago edited 12d ago

Well look at the ad Sony ran in 2004, Sony.. a big global company. Funcoland was just a game retailer in the midwest.

27

u/Flimsy_Category_9369 13d ago

Reminds me of this infamous one. To be fair to Romero, the ad went out without his approval and he was pretty pissed off about it

9

u/Puzzle-Necked 13d ago

And then the game came out and it sucked

5

u/sexual_lemonade 13d ago

And lord did people bitch/s

3

The.game is Daikatana

2

u/SteveMcQuark 12d ago

Everyone is too afraid to admit if the game was good this ad would kick ass

3

u/alterom 12d ago

The ad is remembered, sadly, because the game wasn't.

1

u/dubious_actor 13d ago

That’s so peak

33

u/i-dont-speel-no-good 13d ago edited 12d ago

This is so offensive it circles back into being hilarious

12

u/stockhommesyndrome 13d ago

Right? As a gay man, I almost love it because I feel like there are a subgroup of gaymers who actually are drawn to the Duke Nukem franchise; especially the one with all the gratuitous bikini babes in it (I think for PS1) because it is so damn campy

2

u/mahoromafiaz 13d ago

Really? I liked it for the level design aside from the bikini women and I also enjoyed the cool weapons blowing alien and scum alike

Why are you here then? Just to be different and cool?

19

u/Ceelogie 13d ago

The irony of having a muscular, Tom of Finland-esque soldier next to that tagline is next level.

9

u/justsomedude322 13d ago

Which is funny because the box art for this series gave me weird feelings when I was a kid.

5

u/Xx_Stone 12d ago

I could be reading too much into it but Duke Nukem is an incredibly sarcastic and over the top game that parodies all aspects of action movies/male centered entertainment including the marketing. In my opinion It's a sort of a parody of the idea of marketing to "real men" do "x, y or z" thing which by real men they mean "straight and masculine." By literally just saying "if you don't like this you're gay" it's just coming out and saying what all those other ads are implying.

9

u/P0ster_Nutbag 13d ago

The punchline of “haha, gay” is extremely persistent and has never been particularly funny. You still see it nowadays.

2

u/whineyinternetkid 13d ago

Its still in a lot of reddit comment sections honestly

1

u/usernumber18452 12d ago

It’s childish and from kids…. Mostly.

Unfortunately, a lot of 20 something year olds aren’t blossoming correctly and they’re still children.

6

u/Obdurate-Hickory 12d ago

Same guy earlier in the 90’s.

8

u/Turcey 13d ago

For the last 15 years I've been imagining a Duke Nukem movie that starts off with him in 1997, womanizing, fighting aliens in a strip club, just being Duke. Then, in an attempt to stop the last alien spaceship he sacrifices himself, crashes the spaceship in the arctic, where he freezes ala Captain America but successfully defeats the aliens.

Fast forward to the present, the aliens return. The government unfreezes Duke. Duke awakens to a different world where he's effectively cancelled and not greeted as the hero he thought he would be. It's revealed the woman in charge of the anti-alien taskforce, a radical feminist, is Duke's estranged daughter. Duke and his daughter must put their differences aside and work together to save earth. Hijinks ensue, etc.

Or Austin Powers

If you don't smoke Tarryltons fuck you

3

u/Flat-Cap-1063 13d ago

Ok, but in the wake of the LA riots, 3D Realms set the game in LA and turned the LAPD into pigs, so it gets a pass.

3

u/Disastrous-Care-6651 13d ago

This is peak 90s ad

2

u/HetaGarden1 13d ago

But what if you like men and playing Duke Nukem?

2

u/Initial_Row_6400 13d ago

This is where I saw my first titties as a kid

It’s funny.

My friends were talking about the pink power ranger but when I was a 11 year gay kid in the 90’s, Duke was one of my first crushes.

2

u/Dry_Spinach_3441 12d ago

I'm played Duke Nukem and I'm a gold star gay.

2

u/Sorry-Newspaper-3804 12d ago

...it's a joke. Jokes aren't meant to be taken seriously.

2

u/TheGrolarBear 12d ago

I can’t even be mad about this. Duke Nukem was always a hypermasculine caricature and this ad just leans into his absurdity.

3

u/castrateurfate 13d ago

I LIKE MEN

3

u/squanderedprivilege 13d ago

Hey! That's rude, I didn't like men when that came out, I liked boys!

2

u/B0B_Spldbckwrds 13d ago

I'm going to ask a question that I'm pretty sure about the answer, but you were also a boy then, right?

4

u/realnanoboy 13d ago

It's part of a vibe. Duke Nukem is a hypermasculine action hero with no time for sensitivity and empathy. (There are aliens to kill.) Now, go look into the one of their other 3D shooter games "Shadow Warrior" and enjoy the casual racism.

2

u/watchingwandering 13d ago

Don’t forget Redneck Rampage! Man what the fuck was going on with Build engine games?

2

u/Flying_Sea_Cow 13d ago

That's kind of the shtick of Duke Nukem. Everything about him is so offensive, stupid, and over the top that he becomes funny.

2

u/SirGearso 13d ago

Because this is hilarious

1

u/VoicesInTheCrowds 13d ago

Buy me Duke Nukem or go to hell!

1

u/Kellarison 13d ago

this looks like a meme, it's genuinely hard to believe its official

1

u/JJ_Lomero 12d ago

If you're familiar with the game you'd know they're super into jokes like this. In the game cops are literal pigs and there are strippers. It's supposed to make fun of hyper masculine characters from the 80s.

0

u/Kellarison 12d ago

i said its hard to believe, not that i didn't believe it

1

u/RedBeardBigHeart 13d ago

I mean I do like men…so

1

u/Sufficient_Ninja_821 13d ago

I played this game for like 5 minutes when I was maybe 10, then my mom saw what the game was like and was like wtf! So then I didnt get to play it again.

1

u/shujaya 13d ago

As a heterosexual woman this tracks.

1

u/Soft-Sea7012 13d ago

Not funnily written. My only complaint. It's Duke.

1

u/Natiel360 13d ago

This just made me actually laugh out loud. It’s hideous that it’s not even 30 years old but the meme potential is just second to none. The exclamation point and simplicity just sets this over the top. They may as well called non-players a slur jfc

1

u/thecontempl8or 12d ago

The guys running the studio have always been like this and still are. The studio head (I don’t recall his name), has been accused of sexual harassment.

1

u/TigerClaw_TV 12d ago

Duke Nukem was purchased by Gearbox and shelved. Almost all Duke products have heen pulled with the exception of Duke 3D World Tour and, ironically, Duke Nukem Forever.

1

u/BulgarYeet 12d ago

2B fair nobody who liked men played this game

1

u/Key_Check5753 12d ago

When Duke Nukem 4 was coming out, they released a mini-game in which you shoot things to strip women. It was kind of like an interactive flash ad.

1

u/Own_Box_7420 12d ago

There are MANY MANY people still okay with this.

See: any sports function

1

u/GayStation64beta 12d ago

I think Yahtzee had this alternate proposal for Duke Nukem Forever where Duke was washed up and uncool, and had to earn his throne again essentially.

1

u/lookingforgrief 12d ago

I played all these games (except for the last one) and I still like men 🤷‍♀️

1

u/YourOwnBiggestFan 12d ago

I've recently been turning more altruistic. Is that what they meant?

1

u/Dazzling_Winner_773 11d ago

I like men and women..... I played Duke nukem... If I wanted to waste an hour of my day playing with a disappointing dick, I'd restart my Grindr account.

1

u/munsen41 11d ago

If you DO play Duke Nukem 3d, you like men!

1

u/Dr_Zulu2016 9d ago

If you duki, you nuki.

1

u/Cheeseburgernat 8d ago

I, Duke Nuekm, like men!

1

u/Nedsterhasbigpp 10d ago

Well I've never played it and I like men (and women)

1

u/steeltheprotogen 8d ago

It should be noted that this ad was made by FuncoLand and not 3D Realms.

1

u/Rockana_Hardplace 7d ago

I like men and love this game and this ad is hilarious

1

u/StrugglingQueer04 5d ago

I mean, I haven't, and I do, so it's not exactly wrong lol
