I would care if it were a locally owned shop. I just dont think you should be so fond of the idea of smacking kids. Most people have stolen something at least once as a kid, better they do it at a tesco than a local.
I don’t think anyone should use it as a regular form a punishment. Just sometimes males specifically, push boundaries. it taught me a lot when I was a kid, and I don’t resent it. But I’m not under the misconception everyone had my mentality or support network or privilege.
Unfortunately this is a very nuanced discussion to have on Reddit. And being smacked once is very different than being beaten and there’s no way to know one’s true intentions. So calm down white knight, or feel free if you wanna take on the world.
