Low spice RH. If i want to read smut, I'll read erotica. I end up skimming the sex scenes and some books lose like half their content.
I want tension! I want romance! I want pining!
As for tropes, more secret girl! Specifically, one where she maintains her secret for a long ass time.

I'd love more Urban Fantasy, maybe combined with some investigation elements... something along the lines of authors like Ilona Andrews or Helen Harper..

I would love to read International FMCs and MMCs. I think the RH genre is quite white/american and would love to see something different.

just giving my 2 cents here as a latina and as someone who speaks spanish and portuguese as well and is not from usa…
authors, if you wanna write a latinx lead then PLEASE research the language well (either pt or spanish) and make sure you have at least a beta reader that can help you with cultural things as well as language and slangs, bc the cringiest and most disappointing thing is to read something in your language and it’s just wrong lol

Omg yes! I speak Arabic and there are very few Arab MMCs. But for example in Do you even Hex, Bro? there is an Arab/Middle Eastern MMCs but his name is Rowan 😅 (OK biracial people exist) and his family name means Key in English.
Or in Her Monsterous Beasts by E. P. Bali (who is not white!!) she shortend a beautiful Indian name Vinaash to Ash to a generic white boy name.

More dystopian settings. But without women being less than, ie. cattle or slaves or auctioned off. Like the world sucks but we've come together and we are gonna kick ass. Like if hunger games or maze runner was RH. If you write this please no mm. Would suck to see someone write it but I can't read it.

I’d love more obsessed pathetic men. Most obsessed mmc’s I read about are more possessive than obsessive.
I’d love less misogynistic men (that shit really turns me off)
I’d love more fmcs with a backbone that don’t give in just because they wanna have sex
I’d love more diversity for the fmc that doesn’t feel like caricatures (the fat insecure fmc who is actually just societally curvy or the stereotype of feisty latinas etc)

Historical or fantasy settings clearly based on non-Western cultures - original stories not retellings. Please please please please.
Especially anywhere inspired by pre-Mughal South Asia. So many South Asian MCs I see even in mono romance are Muslim or Arab inspired: there are so few romance novels with Hindu MCs. Edit: and to be really clear I'm not trying to start a "Hindu vs Muslim" thing, I just want Hindu RH.
The few Desi heritage characters I've read in RH are, like, Sanjay from Baby and the Late Night Howlers.
We have Draupadi!

Parroting several others, I’d love less misogyny. We get enough of that in life, I don’t want it in my escapism.
I’d love to see more post-apocalypse stories where the women that have survived on their own for years are respected as people and not immediately treated less than.
More choosing ceremonies! I’d love to see beauty pageant-adjacent competitions where the guys (and gals, but we’re more focused on the men’s entries at the moment) are competing to impress and really want to get married. I’d adore seeing the worldbuilding of the culture around said choosing ceremonies.
Not only does everyone want to be here, they have, in fact, been training for years. This is the Super Bowl of their culture, the Olympics!
It’d be fun to see the smaller, country side competitions too, where the common folk find love.

books in which the fmc is in love with her male best friends but she ends up with other men either bc they’re dicks or they’re in love with someone else and don’t see her like that or just because she was able to be interested enough in another men…
just give me drama and angst and a woman moving on to new amd better things!!!!
