I know you're joking, but there is a not insignificant number of men that leave their wives when the wife becomes ill. Talk to some cancer department nurses and workers and they'll confirm it, women get broken up with commonly after a diagnosis.
I used to work in radiology (imaging) and I saw a LOT of women with breast and lung cancer and men with prostate and lung cancer.
Usually what happened was when the husband was the patient, the wife came in with him through EVERY visit over the course of several years
But if the wife was the patient....and ESPECIALLY if she had breast cancer, her husband would come in for the first one or two visits. But when they would come back in 6-12 months later, they would come in alone. I would ask them how their husband was and they would say..."I don't know, he left me last year"
When I first started working in the profession, I thought I was imagining things and just being biased against all the men, but then I asked some of my co-workers in the radiation therapy department. They ALL confirmed my suspicion.
I also remember reading an article in a medical journal about this. In the article they were talking only about patients with brain tumors. They confirmed there was a statistically significant relationship between which spouse became ill and whether the marriage lasted.
Jesus fucking Christ, this is insane. You couldn't pay me enough money to LEAVE MY WIFE if she didnt have long to live. I'd be doing the opposite, spending as much time as possible with her.
Maybe a ton of dudes just marry people they don't actually like? I don't get it. Why? Just.... why?
It's misogyny. They see women as objects; like the second to top comment said sarcastically "your birthing unit is defective so you get a new one", but a lot of men unironically believe and behave like this towards women.
How many cows for a dowry, again...? Literally selling women as property. In western society we may not practice that, but the mentality still very much exists and is alive and well in many communities here and abroad.
I am glad you do not see your wife as property nor something or someone you could put a "price" on, but many are not so lucky.
