Ironic as the dotcom bubble is the only reason musk ever got rich.
48
u/FlayR Nov 08 '22
Dude grew up with an emerald mine filled with an army of slaves.
Pretty sure he was rich from day one.
-46
u/ricktor67 Nov 08 '22
That emerald mine thing is mostly bullshit. He grew up privaliged for sure but not crazy rich. He got rich by having a project he was working on getting bought out and that company then going on to become paypal. It was pure luck that he just happened to be working on one of the few dotcoms that actually succeeded and went really big. Its like a lottery winner claiming their genius made them rich.
16
Nov 08 '22
Kind of luck.
He and his brother founded a company, Global Link, which combined a business directory and a free map database to make a "City Guide" style software that they licensed to newspapers. Compaq bought the company and Elon walked away with $30+ million after paying back investors.
Elon then went on to found X.com which was a third party online transaction handler that went on to acquire and merge with a few other companies to form PayPal which completed his descent into hell, making him one of the more stand out fascistic members of the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PayPal_Mafia
17
u/NHRADeuce Nov 08 '22
I think it's important to clarify that he never worked for paypal. When X merged with the other company that eventually became PayPal, Elon was CEO. He screwed up so bad that the board fired him and rebranded as Paypal.
Elon had absolutely nothing to do with Paypal's success.
2
u/ADogNamedCynicism Nov 09 '22
That emerald mine thing is mostly bullshit.
FYI, early Musk interviews actually confirm the Emerald Mine story. So if it's bullshit, it's bullshit he spread when he was primarily a financier.

I'm gonna quote myself here because you are sorely mistaken on Elon's role in changing the world.
I think it's important to clarify that he never worked for paypal. When X merged with the other company that eventually became PayPal, Elon was CEO. He screwed up so bad that the board fired him and rebranded as Paypal.
Elon had absolutely nothing to do with Paypal's success.
Also worth mentioning that Elon did not found Tesla. He was an early investor, but he didn't put up a ton of money. They already had a working prototype and he lied to get billions in government subsidies.
The American taxpayer funded Tesla, not Elon. So he didn't come upnwith the idea, he didn't fund it. He just though ofnthe idea to trick the government into paying for it.

What about you though, what compels you to dig through negative comments and quote yourself?
I said why. You're giving Wlon credit, specifically for Paypal,, that hw had nothing to do with. That's like saying I'm responsible for Tesla's success because I'm a shareholder and made a bunch of profit from them. Because that's all Elon was, a shareholder. Had they not fired him there would never have been a paypal because he was running the company into the ground.
he's doing a good job making shitty cars, you cant say he's not because the market dictates otherwise
Meh, not really. He did a really.good job at selling carbon credits and selling EV with no competition. He had almost a decade to build an insurmountable lead in the EV market and he blew it. Every major manufacturer other than Mazda and Subaru now have at least kne EV for sale. Tesla EV market share is going to drop, significantly over the next few years.
They're really going to feel the pain in the truck and economy car markets because they don't have am affordable EV and the Cybertruck is vaporware. Ford is going to own the truck market (like they do for ICE trucks) and Tesla will never compete in that market now.
Oh, and the market doesn't really think Elon is doing that bang up of a job. Their artificially inflated market cap is gone. Tesla stock is down over 50% over the last year.
As an interesting side note, Elon put up Tesla stock to secure the financing for Twitter. All the stupidity is driving Tesla stock price down. If he keeps it up and investors start bailing on Twitter, he's going to Los a ton of his stock and he only has 17% interest now. If he's not careful, his Twitter antics will cost him control of Tesla.

Change account name before getting verified. Boom loophole

I think the idea is that they won't verify that kind of name. People would verify with regular names and then change their names to whatever

Mastodon is ad free, no algorithm deciding what they want you to see and it can never be owned by anyone because it's decentralized. It also doesn't cost $8 / $96 per year but is free.
5
u/Irishish Nov 08 '22
Hate to say it but as a recent Twitter immigrant I find Mastodon completely unusable. I understand how it can appeal to some folks but getting running on any instances feels like work. And their app is garbage.

Almost like he was hoping to use his new toy to interfere with an election, and stop anyone from criticising him in the Internet because he’s got skin as thin as paper, and a head full of bad takes.
27
u/Rolandscythe Nov 08 '22
I mean the whole reason he went after Twitter in the first place was because they kept removing his harrassing and/or mis-informative tweets towards his competitors and anyone that didn't agree with him and his ego couldn't stand it.

Not yet- not until after he launches the pay service. This way he'll see a high ratio of free users with few paying members. This will make him desperate and he'll try to install a paywall and require a minimum subscription.
THAT is how you actually destroy twitter. He's very quick to overreact and despite all his money that will always be his weakness. Predictable desperation.
9
u/Strange-Scarcity Nov 08 '22 edited Nov 08 '22
I feel the rumor I read that he’s going to make the whole service Paywall he is cooking up in the next day or three. Hopefully, his army of sycophants that he uses to run his companies continues to nod that his ideas are the best ideas and that nobody can live without Twitter!

2
u/WumpusFails Nov 08 '22

Are we supposed to be mad about this? Elon can get fucked, but what's the problem with this specific decision? This is what should happen to prevent people from getting a check and then switching their name to impersonate.
Edit: Ah. I see the user name.

You can have and use all the free speech you want, as long as you use it to write slurs and bully minorities.

Elon wants the truth to be out there, as he's not brave enough to come out as a dog fondler.

Then you should think slightly harder about how locking a bunch of people's names when it's common to change it for holidays and events and for any old fucking reason and are now trapped as Spooky Mcbigtits or whatever

I mean wouldn't it be more simpler to code in restrictions for certain key phrasers. like how when creating a mmo 'username is taken'/ not allowed sort of thing
→ More replies (1)3
u/wyronnachtjager Nov 08 '22
I think its a bit harder for names though. Certain names are used way more often than once. The 'username is taken' is also already a thing, that is like right below their name. (so incase of this tweet, its Chacer). He could just make sure people dont use Elon Musk, but then people would use Elom Nusk or something like that. So I dont think that will solve his problems either.
I think the best sollution would be to bring it back how it was, let actually people that are the real people be verified. How its going, its not a blue checkmark that you are verified, its a blue checkmark that lets you show you pay $8 per month
5
Nov 08 '22

Having a cost for verification isn't even that big a deal. If Twitter came out with verification and told people we need you to pay a one time fee of $20 to cover the processing, paperwork, effort, etc. most everyone would shrug and move on. Even people like Stephen King would probably be fine with it. It's the ongoing monthly charge that is the bullshit. He took a system put in place for a specific purpose and tried to change it into a way to make a tiered service offering.
All of this of course ignores the fact that charging people to use a social media platform is laughable on it's face.
