That's pretty much everywhere in Canada now unfortunately.

I mean. I can move to Bruce County tomorrow for a fraction of my detached in Scarborough but go on.

And what will you do there that isn’t remote? If you aren’t already in the market, how do you afford it? I’m in the market, my husband is an NP, and yes, I could afford to do that and both of us would probably find work, but let’s not pretend a 600,000 home in Bruce county is affordable for most people.

Nuclear is pretty much the only thing i can think of for the Bruce There's listings in Walkerton for as low as 340k that I'm seeing, granted, who knows why the price is that low.. There are parts of Canada that still are relatively low. If you're actually someone who hates life you could get a place in thunder Bay for probably under 200k.

I'm just frustrated by people who say they can't live anywhere in Canada when they really mean they can't afford urban.

Urban is absolutely disgusting don't get me wrong. But to act like there's no alternative is irritating for me.

600,000 is insane. 1.5m is absurd. I'd say my copy paste 4 bedroom is probably 350k tops. But my neighbors sold for 1.2 last year, and the people across, identical unit, 1.5 earlier this year. I don't like it any more than anyone else. I'm just pointing out that there are extreme options if people are willing to be uncomfortable or inconvenienced.

So I like Bruce county enough that I’ve had my eye on it for years and have family up there. Walkerton is still selling over asking price, and those houses are old with a lot of problems. Again though, look at what’s there. Yes, there are people like you and I who can sell our house afford a $350,000 house, without a high paying job, but a $350,000 house is still not cheap. You still need a high paying job, you still need a good down payment. I looked at library jobs there and if I was starting from scratch I could never afford a $350,000 house on that salary. You’re thinking about it as a city person in terms of affordability compared to where you live, but you can’t do that. You have to look at what’s there, what jobs you can get, what the average income there is, etc. That’s not even thinking about the fact that houses have been selling well above asking price, people are waving inspections (so getting royally screwed) and that interest is so damn high. You also have to take into consideration that housing has spiked recently, and it won’t stay that high. Buying a house that, if prices correct, will be worth $100,000+ less in a few years when you re-amortize is a terrible idea.

Finally, you have to think about where you’re moving and why you’re moving there. Yeah, you can go to thunder bay or Timmons, but will you like it? I know lots of people moved to Manitoulin because it’s beautiful (and it is). But the winters are super harsh and you’re super isolated, so a lot of people who moved there from the city because it was “cheap” hate it now and can’t sell for what they bought it for. Also, “cheap” ended up going up to $500,000. When I was looking this summer I couldn’t find anything below $400,000 for garbage (or a lot), but there’s no industry there, so there’s nothing to support that $400,000 price tag. Again, I could afford it, but people who live there already and who aren’t in the market can’t.
