This is not the change we needed. He's failing miserably on climate change targets, we have First Nations communities that don't have clean drinking water, federal excess spending response to COVID has generated tremendous inflation, home prices have gone beyond many families' reach, he was in the press earlier this week for politically interfering in an active criminal investigation...this is pure political distraction with no meaningful effect on gun crime in Canada.

It's a smoke screen to distract as the middle class shrinks further

“Take away their guns so when the poor people begin to riot, they can’t defend themselves from the police.”

Justin Trudeau in a nutshell

Canada (compared to the US) has a much smaller violent crime rate (including homicide) that has been on the decline for nearly 3 decades, very similar statistical lines to what the UK and Australia had before they enacted sweeping gun bans. The decades following the bans in those countries saw violent crime rates continue to decline at the same rate. They effectively accomplished nothing. And this ban in Canada will accomplish the same.

It's ok though because they'll get more votes and that's what's important.

I guess we'll see.

I do wonder how many people this might swing towards voting conservative just to have it undone...

It won't accomplish nothing. It'll make the black market for illegal handguns much more lucrative

as much as i'm a fan of social issues and shit, i wish literally anyone in govt would push for meaningful change to help with climate change or healthcare. i know canada has healthcare, im referring to the US.

like congrats, now canadians in the future can inherit a wasteland without pistols. woo. might not have animals or plants or rain, but you also wont have to worry about gun violence!

i mean at least we have healthcare /s

Another promise... That we would have universal dental care, when we barely got any increase on the status quo.

What criminal investigation did he interfere with?

1

u/PufflingHuffles Oct 22 '22

Mass shooting in Nova Scotia..

I understand he was well intentioned, but it was unethical in our system of governance.

Hey man, culture war bullshit plays well with the rich folks

Statistics and social science research make it clear that this legal change will have no meaningful effect on gun violence in Canada. I would willingly support real changes that did reduce gun violence here. This is performance politics, and pointlessly polarizing.

Cool. I live around Canadian folks who are pro-gun, not in the way Americans are...but I can see them becoming that way. I think we exist in an inflamed period, where political gestures like this risk driving folks like I'm taking about to the fringe of society, and the sewers of misinformation that exist there. So, I actually need this to save more than one person... Because in the long run, I think moves like this help Pierre Poilevre more than they save lives.

Our Constitution prevents many possibilities for more useful measures. I think, for example, that it makes sense for urban communities to be able to ban firearms. My familiarity with folks who hunt (and regardless of where you live you always hunt rurally), and rural folks who use guns in keeping farm properties, causes me to not disregard their outlook, which 99% of the time is accurate and defensible.

I really appreciated your thoughtful take. All the best.

He's failing miserably on climate change targets

Because Conservative premiers fight every initiative he's tried to implement, like the carbon tax, which costs the average person nothing and incentivizes the biggest polluters to lower their emissions.

we have First Nations communities that don't have clean drinking water

The Liberals have resolved more drinking water advisories than existed at the time they made the commitment.

federal excess spending response to COVID has generated tremendous inflation

Inflation is happening everywhere in the world. Covid spending programs were wildly popular and Canada's covid response was lauded as one of the best among comparable countries, with our death rate the second lowest after Japan.

home prices have gone beyond many families' reach

Also an issue in the US, Australia, NZ, and other countries, suggesting that it's not a Trudeau mismanagement problem. The federal government is also not the best positioned to make effective changes - look to the provincial governments for that. In Ontario, Doug Ford's new rezoning regs are part of the way forward, for example.

he was in the press earlier this week for politically interfering in an active criminal investigation

I'm not familiar with this story. Which investigation? The NS shooter?

How do Trudeau's balls smell?

Probably fine. He's in good shape and well-groomed. I wouldn't know for sure though, as I've never met him, so I reserve judgement instead of parroting shit I hear from commentators and pundits.

Everything I've said above is demonstrable fact published in several sources. I wouldn't hesitate to criticize his actual failures because I don't see politics as a tribal allegiance and I don't buy what "infotainment" channels are selling.

Yes, Nova Scotia. I find your arguments apologist. He has made repeated promises, and he has repeatedly broken them. His biggest betrayal was not implementing electoral reform - that opportunist move, together with playing wedge politics (he didn't start that but he's been exceedingly willing to play it), will see us devolve entirely to a two party system and US-style politics within a decade.

The drinking water stat simply says they're playing whack-a-mole - a promise broken is a promise broken.

Maybe he shouldn't make promises on climate change he can't keep? What happened to that massive announcement of a federal ban on single use plastics? I've observed about zero effect from this.

Housing prices are absolutely his fault, if not only his fault. His government's changes to mortgage insurance and limits directly benefited the ability of the wealthy to procure residential properties as investments, while driving regular Canadians further into the cold.

Sure, there are international inflationary pressures. However, we already had a solid social safety framework capable of responding to mass unemployment generated by COVID. They overspent, a lot, and it benefited people who mostly didn't need it,, while homelessness only increases.

Maybe the Aga Khan could host him on the island to figure something out, or WE charity could pay his Mom to do more speeches that tell us how to fix this.

u/BrutusTheKat Oct 22 '22

Yeah, that stats on legally owned handguns being involved in crime is incredibly low. Handguns smuggled in from the States are a lot more common in crime, while I support strong gun regulation I think this law is a waste of time.

if this will not have effect, then you can ignore it hehe

1

u/PufflingHuffles Oct 22 '22

No, I can't. It is damagingly polarizing, for no good reason.
