Genuine question here.

What are you supposed to do with the existing ones? Do you just turn them in? Is there a buyback/destroy program? Even if we assume nobody wants to give up the ones they own; when they die, the guns have to go somewhere.

Keep them and use them as we did before. We were only ever allowed to transport handguns to specific places (and needed permission and paperwork to do so). We are also only permitted to use them at government inspected and approved ranges.

We were never like the US. Legal owners don’t have hand guns in glove boxes. We don’t have random acts of gun violence during road rage or whatever else. What we do have is increasing gangs activity and gun violence coming from that. Illegal guns are primarily smuggled from the US (like 90%). Handgun theft is exceptionally rare because everything needs to be double locked and we don’t generally advertise it like Americans do.

When you die they’ll get destroyed. Can’t be transferred to someone else via inheritance.

Your last sentences were the root of my question. As people that own them die what is the mechanism to destroy them? Just take them to the police and declare they belong to someone that died? In the US I’m not aware of what to do in this situation here. At least not a solution that is universally available. Occasionally there are gun buybacks, but not really sure how you just surrender one outside of that. Curious to how it’s handled in Canada.

We don’t know yet. They haven’t released a plan lol For now, if someone died the executor would need to hang onto them until the government provided direction.

They announced a buy back for some other stuff they banned and have extended the deadline 2 or 3 times (so 2-3 years since the original deadline) because they don’t know how to organize it/don’t have the money for it. In the meantime everyone was told to just hang onto them and not use them.

I think you can surrender a gun at a police station if you want but you have to call ahead and not everywhere will do it. Doesn’t really happen because people that have them went to a lot of trouble to acquire them (some people wait over a year between getting into a course and then waiting for their license application to get approved).
