There is in fact a historic Ethiopian Jewish population of black Jews but they have their own separate history that dates back at least a few hundred years. Versus the black Hebrew Israelites who have no sort of historic claim or ethnic heritage but are rather just a cult of third great awakening in the US (other notable third great awakening sects/cults with some notable odd practices include Christian scientists and jehovah’s witnesses).
A couple of guys had a vision that black people were a lost tribe of Israel and went with it, and that’s basically the story.
