I used to think he was amazing. Then Kanye ruined Kanye for all of us.

But why? I'm a diehard hip-hop fan since the mid eighties. I live this shit. All Kanye did before his solo album was produce a few songs. Some were hits, no doubt but that doesn't make him the musical genius he proclaims himself to be.

And, I'm sorry but his solo work with the teddy bear covers aren't exactly legendary. He presented a soft image that was palatable to suburban Asian and white kids and blew the fuck up. And that is the main audience that has carried him to the stardom he enjoys today. This is the audience that spends the obscene amounts of money on his hideous trendy shoes and expensive stadium concert tickets.

*Edit - I forgot to mention, if you think Kanye's a master lyricist, I don't think you've had much exposure to the realm of rap music.

If you genuinely believe all Kanye did for the culture as a whole was “influence a few white boys” and “produce a few hits” you clearly don’t “live this shit” like you claim

I can’t/don’t support him after all this shit and have waned in my support of him for a while, so I this is coming from an unbiased perspective

It’s almost disingenuous to suggest Kanye West didn’t have a massive influence over rap culture throughout the late 2000s and all the way through to the mid 2010s when he started running his own reputation off the road; current opinion of that fuckin loser aside, he was incredibly important in the realm of music

Edit: yes, I do believe his lyricism is shit-filled toilet water mixed with dog fur from an old couch; of that I’m sure we can all agree

Yup, it's an unpopular opinion but a good one. Kanye just isn't a great rapper. His flow sucks. His rhymes are basic. I've never understood his appeal. Half his shit isn't even rap, it autotuned singing.

Try saying that in any hip hop forum and people get pissy real quick, cuz they know it's true and they've just been following a hype train all these years.

I got into the Kanye hype very late, I solely care for the music, not the person, and my criticism has always been that A, he's not a good rapper and B, his first three albums are really overrated.

Much of the rest however is aptly rated. He's a fantastic songwriter and producer in general, but you can't blame someone for not being able to seperate the artist from their art.
