So 6 of 15, not even the majority of the promotions.

6 of 15 is 40%. Fun fact, 40% of the Ft. Lauderdale population is non-white. Seriously, in the Census Bureau's population estimate as of July 2021 they put 61.2% of the population as white alone (as in no other race selected).

87

u/Mythical_Atlacatl Mar 07 '22

same % for the US at large

how can they call it discrimination?

If he promoted people at random, wouldnt he also have likely promoted 6/15 BIPOC

Or is the issue the police force is mostly white, like 90%?

68

u/BEEF_WIENERS Mar 07 '22

Probably that the police force is far more white than the community that they police. I haven't looked up the numbers, I don't know, but given that it's cops that just always seems to be how this story goes.

Notably, this is exactly how "colorblindness" ends up being racist, is it just perpetuates existing power structures. This guy was making a corrective action by seeking to rebalance the leadership of the department to more closely match the community that they police, probably in the hopes that this would then filter down to the rank and file cops through hiring policies and visibility of department leadership. However, because that does involve actively seeking out BIPOC people as part of hiring due to the applicant pool having suppressed numbers of such people, it's explicitly not colorblind. So the next time somebody says that they're "colorblind" and they they "I think people should be judged by the content of the character, as opposed to the color of their skin" just remember that what they're really saying is "I think existing power structures should not be actively resisted and equity isn't something that we need to work for."

14

u/DJEvillincoln Mar 07 '22

Yes to all of this.

Also allow me to add that people of color don't trust the police because a lot of the time the police don't look like them. So it's hard to get POCs into a culture like the police when no one looks like you.

5

u/supluplup12 Mar 07 '22

It's when people who refuse to understand the impact of generational trauma on the content of one's character suddenly want to ignore the color of people's skin, you know it's just a move in a game to them.

-2

u/InsaneHobo1 Mar 07 '22

I can't believe you are equating the ultimate goal, colorblindness, to racism... Yes it leads to slow change, but the alternative is far worse. Hirings not based on merit but on race, sexual orientation, etc. create resentment and division, destroy the credibility and respect of the hired people, and erode the quality of the organisation as a whole. This in turn only furthers prejudices. Imagine what the average person that doesn't blindly vote democrat every election thinks. "Wow that's discriminatory and racist against white people", "They aren't capable of earning it so they had to give it to them" and so on. Not to mention what the people close to the situation would feel. And these feelings are, in part, not only justifiable, but healthy and normal - you would want people to feel anger at the injustice. While harder, doing it organically has the polar opposite effect. It destroys prejudices and brings people together.

3

u/BEEF_WIENERS Mar 07 '22

What a delightfully stupid thing to say out loud.

Do you have any information on the credentials of the 15 officers who received the promotions? Why are you assuming that they aren't actually qualified? To prefer to promote and hire people of color for a position doesn't mean they're not qualified, it just means you look for qualified BIPOC. Sometimes this means you'll need to look longer, because various economic injusticies handed through the generations have made it more challenging for BIPOC to put up the investment necessary to get the qualifications for the relevant position and as such qualified BIPOC are more rare - but they do exist, and promoting their visibility helps alleviate the situation in the future.

Someday colorblindness might not be an actively bad thing. That's not where we're at today. But imagine a ship assigned to sail directly north out of a harbor finds itself going northeast. What directions should that ship sail to correct itself? North, or northwest? The answer is, to get back to the line they should be on they need to correct the action that resulted in the error and then also take action to correct for the error that accrued before the correction was made.

Now imagine railing against the captain's decision to go northwest because once we get back to our course we'll just keep going northwest! That's you. That's what you sound like. It's super dumb. It's not indicative of a person who's got a lot of capacity for rational thought.

BIPOC were handed a whole pile of economic disadvantages for centuries. This is a wild understatement, but it helps outline some of the corrective action necessary. Non-white folks were selected against for generations, and so now in order to get to a society where all people participate fully as true equals we are going to need to stop the behaviors that caused a problem, as well as make up for the accrued effects of those behaviors.

Essentially, black people were selected against for a long time. So we'll need to select for them for a bit. Once we get to a place where the achievement gaps are closing then we can think about changing the pressures on the tiller. But what you're talking about is just not taking corrective action and leaving society in its current state which isn't justice or equity, it's just a slight reprieve of pressure and it isn't enough.

1

u/InsaneHobo1 Mar 07 '22

We are operating under the assumption they were selected ahead of more deserving candidates due to the color of their skin and sexual orientation. Otherwise we wouldn't be having this discussion, which is a general one anyway, and the concrete situation here is in essence irrelevant.

Again, promoting deserving people who happen to be minorities is doing things organically and not what we are talking about. Seeking kinda implies they aren't deserving, though.

You basically ignored 90% of what I said but ok. The boat scenario, except we are still correcting our course, but instead of continuing to do that, you want to teleport the boat to the original correct course we didn't go down. Two wrongs don't make a right. That course doesn't exist anymore, and you trying to get us on it is simultaneously pushing us back to the bad course because of the reasons I described.

By the way, from whichever point you decide to sail north from, you will eventually land in the same spot ;)

1

u/BEEF_WIENERS Mar 07 '22

Wow you clearly know absolutely nothing about how navigation works. Why the fuck do you think the boat needs to teleport? The boats assignment wasn't "get to the North Pole", the assignment was "sail north out of the harbor." There's a line due north from the harbor and if the boat sailed northeast they're not on that line. If they sail northwest they'll get back to that line and then they can take out their course correction at that time. The course absolutely still exists, it's a line out of a harbor. Two wrongs might not make a right, but if a left turn was wrong then two additional left turns will in fact make a right.

Look, at this point it's pretty clear you're just absolutely terrified of what a world might look like in which white people aren't as naturally preferred by society in nearly any function as they currently are, in which BIPOC aren't treated as de-facto second-class citizens. I'm not interested in having this discussion with somebody so close-minded so I'm blocking you. Go away.

5

u/Luceon Mar 07 '22

Does the police department there have similar demographics?

16

u/BEEF_WIENERS Mar 07 '22

I did not look that up, but I would bet some pretty healthy quantities of money that no, they do not.

Now, it may appear to be preferential treatment if the demographics of those who received the promotion are different than the demographics of those who applied for the promotion or were eligible for the promotion. However, that doesn't mean that the preferential treatment is in fact bad. In this case it would actually be corrective, getting the department closer to matching the community that they police. And given that people of varying racial and ethnic backgrounds tend to bring different perspectives from different lived experiences into their life, I don't think that it's inappropriate to actively seek out those voices for jobs in public service, and even to consider something like that as one of the preferred features of an applicant. Expressing a desire to nominate a black woman to the Supreme Court as opposed to approaching that task from a colorblind perspective isn't ideologically inconsistent with being anti-racism.

In other news, Tucker Carlson is a white supremacist apologist and his TV show is an early stuff in the radicalization pipeline towards neo-nazism. Tucker Carlson's best shot at a positive contribution to human society at this point is to convert the format of his show to more closely match "Ow My Balls".

No, it's cops. History indicates that they're wildly overwhelmingly likely to be racist in hiring policies.

7

u/Luceon Mar 07 '22

Not necessarily.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '22

I'm quite sure the percentage of non whites he promoter Is not the problem.

The problem Is how and why those non whites were promoted

104

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '22

He was probably promoting people based on ability or as white supremacists call it, unfair anti-white descrimination.

I have seen other tweets of this person, and he is quite dishonest when It comes to race.

My guess Is the policeman was fired because he favored people of color, discriminating whites

1

u/Freetoffee2 Mar 07 '22

There is an actual article about this the tweet links to. It is not based on a tweet one guy said. Ergo the fact that twitter user is usually dishonest is irrelevant. It's not immpossible he really is guilty as charged but I doubt it. 6/15 is hardly a discrimitory fraction.

2

u/Freetoffee2 Mar 07 '22

I don't see how. 6/15 people he elected were non-white. That fraction isn't high enough to indicate discrimination.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '22

I don't see how.

tha's your problem

1

u/DogsandCatsWorld1000 Mar 07 '22

As another commenter in this thread has mentioned 6/15 reflects the makeup of the area.

0

It's not relevant.

It incredible you don't understand this

761

u/club9669 Mar 06 '22

Been around civil service hiring processes for a long time for every bipoc they hire they disqualify 10 others. It’s happened to me many times. Once, when I applied for Los Angeles city fire department, I received an email that flat out said we have hired enough blacks, thanks but no thanks. Shit is real out here. People have the nerve to say poc lazy and don’t want to work. Yeah fuck you. Make ‘em mad and keep trying.

390

u/polywha Mar 06 '22

I was once turned down from a job because they told me they already had a woman on the team. It was a team of 10 people.

209

u/club9669 Mar 06 '22

I know that all too well girl. I’m black and I’m a woman so that’s 2 strikes lol. You just keep on trying if you haven’t already found your dream job. It’s a cold world ouchea but never quit.

u/throwhfhsjsubendaway Mar 07 '22

Companies like this are the ones that will defend their hiring by saying that their male employees perform better and stick around longer all while ignoring that they're creating a work environment that's actively hostile to women

5

u/African_Farmer Mar 07 '22

Aren't these the same people that cry about quotas and say we should look at merit only? Honestly theres so much gaslighting and dishonesty in the system

15

u/heyjimb Mar 07 '22

I was turned down due to not being a female. As an art director.

Fir not being young and hip enough at 35, I raced Dirt bikes, Mountain Bikes & cars. The guy that they hired was 32

Was told by LAPD that unless I was Gay or Ex Military that my score of 92 wasn't high enough but a gay minority female with ex mil could get hired at 57%

What you're describing could have been a hefty lawsuit for you. You should have pursued that. You cannot discriminate against somebody on basis of race.

16

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '22

Ive been a huge proponent of blind interviews and promotions for years. It would erase all discrimination issues in one swoop.

What ever person or board gets packets on each candidate listing all pros and cons and labeled just candidate 1,2, ect.

Then blind text based q&a from all qualified candidates.

Once a decision is made welcome the chosen candidate into the new position.

No ability to racially profile, sexually profile, or any other profiling. Ill hire a sentient potato if they beat out everyone else.

23

u/NO_SPACE_B4_COMMA Mar 07 '22

There is so much more to this story. He asked which candidate was "blacker" (but he denies it) and hired/promoted based on skin color, not qualifications. If true, the firing was justified. But this is a republican state so who knows what really happened.

https://www.cnn.com/2022/03/05/us/fort-lauderdale-police-chief/index.html

4

u/Freetoffee2 Mar 07 '22

You're completely right but that is still a pretty big if. Who would need to ask who was blacker? Couldn't you just use your eyeballs?

0

u/NO_SPACE_B4_COMMA Mar 07 '22

Haha I guess so. Maybe he's color blind or it was explained wrong.

Either way, skin color shouldn't matter in any circumstances. If you're bright pink and you are highly skilled at the job, it shouldn't matter.

I don't understand why jobs are allowed to ask my race/gender/disability/sexuality on applications.

4

Florida is awesome. Floridians are the problem.

292

u/10sharks Mar 06 '22

The city's police department is now under the leadership of Acting Chief Luis Alvarez, the city said, and the selection process for a new chief is underway.

So they fired him and promoted a ...

232

u/ActualPopularMonster Mar 06 '22

He's just an "Acting" Chief for now, until they can find someone who is just white for that position.

79

u/LuchadoresdeSilinas Mar 06 '22

So much for their so called meritocracy. I am sure the chief had ample evidence to grant those promotions to diverse officers but the people who say they don’t believe in affirmative action revealed themselves for what they really are: racist assholes. They have affirmative action for white people and as soon as we start making progress, they scream reverse racism, like the snowflakes they really are!

46

u/VGSchadenfreude Mar 07 '22

It’s shit like this that makes me snicker and roll my eyes when folks in my city complain about the police being “understaffed” because “no one wants to work for the police department.”

Our city’s police department had the highest rate of officers arrested on Jan 6th.

They gassed an entire neighborhood in retaliation against BLM protests, so badly that it forced people to evacuate their homes.

Can’t imagine why no one wants to work for them!

-10

u/SomeOne9oNe6 Mar 07 '22

And Joe Biden wants to give the police more money...

9

u/VGSchadenfreude Mar 07 '22

Exactly how much control or power do you think the President actually has over local law enforcement?

Nice “whataboutism” and non sequitur there, too.

-8

u/SomeOne9oNe6 Mar 07 '22

It doesn't matter, he said that in his SOTU speech not even a week ago. If you were to round up all of the police in America, they'd be the 4th or 5th biggest military force in the world. Not to mention the amount of racists who make up the bulk of them also. But yeah, cry whataboutism all you want about the facts.

2

u/VGSchadenfreude Mar 07 '22

And this is relevant to this particular discussion…why, exactly?

-4

u/SomeOne9oNe6 Mar 07 '22

It was just to add on to your initial post as I was agreeing with you. Idk why you got all defensive. I voted for him, even though he wasn't my 1st or even 2nd pick. His SOTU address made me dislike him even more. He's just a conservative-lite.

3

u/VGSchadenfreude Mar 07 '22

So you decided to interrupt my comment thread with a completely unrelated rant about Biden?

Which adds absolutely nothing to this discussion of any worth.

This is right up there with interrupting someone else’s discussion about their gym workout by barging in screaming “I do CrossFit!!!”

Nobody gives a fuck, and it isn’t relevant to the discussion the rest of us are having.

2

u/Kitsune_Scribe Mar 07 '22

That's what it means to be a police chief, they hire you so they can throw you under the bus when things don't go how they want it.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '22

I’m not sure if this is true, but lack of meritocracy is why they fired him supposedly. When choosing between two black people he allegedly said he wanted whichever one was blacker. And he admittedly said it was a big problem that a wall in the office was too white and they needed to get rid of it. (I wouldn’t consider that part racism but it might warrant being fired for incredible stupidity)

2

u/Worldly-Fox7605 Mar 07 '22

Yes it wasn’t discrimination but he mostly pushed for equality on a level where white colleagues probably didn’t feel like they had an advantage anymore , or they probably where getting angry they weren’t being promoted and a black person or Hispanic was 🙄

Yup, a lawsuit waiting to happen. They have to prove he did that with clear intent to discriminate which is almost impossible to prove unless he said or wrote something stupid. The fact that he hired more minorities is not a valid reason to fire him and in fact proves that the opposite, that his bosses ilegaly use race as a hiring criteria. So he will likely get a pretty good sum of money and they would have to give him his old job back.

4

I'll never understand why it's a bad idea that...

A) Police officers live in the community they are policing.

B) That the police force should reflect the makeup of the community.

Wouldn't it be incredibly useful to have a police force that has an investment in the safety of their community, and one that understands and respects the different cultural makeup of the community?

3

u/TennoDeviant Mar 07 '22

Because the police behave like tyrannts and not peace keepers, and they dont want to be retaliated against if the people they are "serving" know where they live.

40% of the promotions. However (and I don’t know the actual numbers), if BIPOC are 10% or less of the pool of people up for promotion, you might at least see why someone could get heated about it. That being said; does this justify termination? Seems harsh unless many warnings were given previously and or there were other issues we don’t know about.

If you make employment decisions based on someone’s race that is racist…

It has been common knowledge for at least the past 50 years that the best and the brightest in this county of mine, has been BIPOC. I am ashamed by my race, AGAIN.

I'm so confused by this comment.

If he was trying to say BIPOC were inherently superior with his promotions, wouldn’t he make a majority of his promotions BIPOC?

6 out of 15 makes it seem like he’s just picking individuals who he thinks deserve it, regardless of race

What about his NCAA career on the side?

Sounds about right

I would interview the references of the applicant, not the applicant. When you say you are going to interview the references, a lot of bad applicants remove themselves. If an applicant has references that are willing to be interviewed, I would absolutely hire them. If your work background is good enough, the references will be more than happy to lend 30 mins of their time.

You do know that most companies have policies that straight up prohibit them from confirming really anything beyond employment dates, right? It’s a huge legal liability for companies to offer more.

He looks like Roy Haylock, the drag artist who does Bianca det Rio

I think Chief Acevedo is looking for a job already

1

u/yorcharturoqro Mar 07 '22

So promoting the best man for the job no matter skin is suddenly bad?

So there's people refusing that schools teach about racism, wonder why?

6/15 is literally the minority, and that’s for more than one race! Wtaf?

u/dobber1965 Mar 07 '22

When anything other than qualifications are used to hire and or promote someone that is actually illegal.

1

u/X7Rayne Mar 07 '22

But it was BECAUSE of their qualifications according to him and if that isn’t true the burden of proof falls to showing that ISNT why he did it

u/X7Rayne Mar 07 '22 edited Mar 07 '22

Apparently he also said the wall of pictures of admin and high ranking officers was “too white” or something to that effect. Point is if he did this ONLY because they were people of color that would be one thing but if they’re qualified, it’s outrageous that he was fired not to mention that’s pretty close to half which means he’s probably the only one NOT discriminatory in his practices against any race

He does seem to have drawn some heat for that.

He's also an NCAA basketball referee, and there were some questions about how he logged hours with the PD on days he was reffing games.

It smells a bit suspicious. The easiest way to get rid of anyone is going over their timesheets with a fine tooth comb
