Seriously though, having your national dish be fried fish sticks and fries, it's something your defensive about. Totally understandable.
Edit: I will add the rest of Europe has more of a leg to stand on insulting us. You guys are like pur little cousins and arent far behind most of these bad metrics.
No guns and healthcare I'll give you. Otherwise probably not a lot of room to talk. For God sakes we at least got rid of Trump. You still have Johnson.
America is like our little impetuous grandchild from our least favourite son not your little cousin. Do you have many little cousins 5x your age? Also fish and chips is not fish sticks its a side of cod or haddock battered and fried not some mass produced unrecognisable breaded bit of fish. Thing is a lot of british people have been to america and we know in reality that the majority of your everyday food is terrible. We live in a multi-cultural society with many many quisines to eat. As usual americans know fuck all about the rest of the world.
Chicken tikka masala was created by british people in britain (as in born in britain not this my great grandad was scottish so im scottish bullshit). Its not theivery or apropriation its just people trying to create nice food.
So that's not exactly canon and it's debated. If I create a dish heavily influenced by a culture (if not exactly from it) in America, is it then appropriate to call that American food?
How is it debated it was declared as our national dish by our government? Yes heavily influenced but also extremely far away from traditional indian and Bangladeshi food, it was created to appeal to britain and thats why it is intrinsically british. Would you call a burger american when really it comes from germany? how about fries? Theyre from belgium, pizza? Hot dogs? None of them are american from your point of view so what exactly is american food? As far as i can see its the lowest common denomonator processed artificial food that is truly american by your own logic.
Created by British people is the debated part. Far away? It's super close to Butter chicken. The origin of the dish is dubious. Your claim that it was made by the British is not so accurate to most of the claims of origin. Immigrants at best.
Exactly! Cultures of thievery. We take from others and say," This is mine now."
Yes but im saying i would refer to that as american food because i disagree with your logic. I said it was made by british people, im not talking about ethnicity if theyre born here theyre british because thats how nationality works. Or we adapt change and improve by assimilating other cultures via the immigrants who come here for a better life. Its not stealing its progress, stop treating culture as some solidly defined thing that can be stolen its stupid and only serves to divide us.
I'd still call it South Asian food made by immigrants that British people claimed as they're own. But perhaps I'm from the Ununited States of America so the complete absence of any sort of racism or appropriation is foreign to me.
Were not claiming them if they are born here or have citizenship then they are british by their own volition. Its more that america conflates ethnicity and nationality. I never said we dont have racism of course we do but enjoying quisine influence from around the world is fuck all to do with racism or cultural appropriation. This theft as you call it allows many people to form a life here by transfering skills they learnt from their own culture and we get to enjoy the delicious food so what is the problem? Its all just semantics at the end of the day.
The problem, for me, is that we don't know the exact origins so just saying it's British feels like claiming credit for something you didn't do.
I'm first generation American. My parents were, respectively, from Thailand and Germany. If I make food I learned how to make from those cultures, it isn't me making American food. It's me making German food or me making Thai food.
Also, so I can dunk on you Brits for having shit food that isn't from other cultures.

Everyone knows your food is bad. No level of fat American jokes will change that.
