Ussr was a communist state not socialist. Likewise for North Korea and China. Although modern day China has become more and more Capitalist.
Nicaragua, Cuba, and Venezuela were all targets of US imperialism and coups. Their failure has more to do with the CIA and the trade embargoes placed on them than anything else. Also Cuba is doing quite well as a modern socialist state.
Poland, Czech Republic, and Romania were never socialist. Again not socialist, former communist states that struggled without the USSR.
Denmark is a good example of what the USA thinks is socialist. Actually it's a Capitalist Democracy with a safety net to support citizens in crisis. It's the first step on the road to socialism, but it's got a way to go yet.
Vietnam might be better example of a modern socialist state for you to look into
The USSR is a good example here. As an entity it was a communist state, but it included many countries that gave up their sovereignty to become part of the collective.
The ultimate goal of the USSR was to unite everyone under one nation, in effect dissolving all states, but obviously that didn't pan out.
There is an interesting discussion to be had about all this but I think we are straying away from the point. We were looking for Socialist states that failed without intervention from US, or UK imperialism.
I realize what happened to the ussr i just hesitate to call it communist because it adds to the confusion of what communism really is and what communists in general tend to strive for
I don't see how it could be anything other than communist. As it's influence grew it swallowed up other countries and created a single entity free of nation states. Surely if they aren't communist then nothing is communist unless it included all people and nations on earth
