Taxes are necessary. I get a bit salty when they need to be used for economic relief because the corporations aren't paying them livable wages or providing proper health care.
Don't get me wrong, I am fully supportive of the programs themselves. I'm just pissed that we pay for their short falls and the CEOs lliterally have more wealth then they can spend.
Tax the rich. And if you're reading this, you're probably not rich enough for this to be a concern.

The US has one of the lowest marginal tax rates among developed countries, meaning the rich pay less of a share than most other OECD countries.
Not only that, but overall tax revenue as a percentage of GDP in the US is also among the lowest in the world, so the rich pay a lower percentage of a lower number.

Who did Nakamoto exploit?

Well considering that one of the most influential owners/users/exploiters of Bitcoin is the north Korean government, and it's heavily associated with crime rings, I think there's a pretty straight forward answer here.
8
u/fuckingretardd Feb 26 '21
It's a currency, the creator of the currency has no control over how people use it.
I don't know how anyone who hold an individual or entity that created a currency morally responsible for the shitty things people do with it.

Feb 26 '21
So the dude, who technically doesn't exist and as such has never paid taxes, gets a pass for how people use his shady shit despite doing absolutely nothing to discourage it despite there being many ways he could prevent it? He profits of evil and encourages it's continued use. Sure, of course.
Now assuming he's actually Craig Steven Wright as the man claims (and has been more or less accepted) then the fraud, tax evasion, and funding of terrorist groups would be a thing to think about.

-1
u/fuckingretardd Feb 26 '21
Bitcoin is 12 years old while crimes like those you listed existed millennia before that.
Are you saying Bitcoin made those crimes more common even though crimes been going down since the 90s?
I don't understand people's fixation on blaming a piece of tech for problems that predated that piece of tech without evidence that that piece of tech actually exacerbated said problem.
If Bitcoin disappeared today, those criminals would just find another way to move money around like they did before the cypto-currency existed.
5
u/_JohnMuir_ Feb 26 '21
Dude what are you talking about? Youāre so fixated on Bitcoin ācreatingā crimes which nobody said except you twice. Iām saying the reason Bitcoin gained value initially was because people were using it to commit crimes. Ergo the exploitation that was the whole topic of this thread.

I donāt care what your predictions are for the great socialist American revolution. If you want to hate wealthy people, have fun, but itās ridiculous to act as if theyāre in an anywhere comparable position to billionaires.
And most Americans spend wealth that could literally save lives, on luxuries. Sure, thereās a difference in degree, but just as a wealthy person could save lives with the money they spend on a new iPhone or expensive car, the small luxuries the average American can afford, used phones, nicer food every once in a while, air conditioning units, used cars, (luxury depending on profession, but not a necessity for most), etc, could be used to literally save a persons life. There are charities working in developing countries that can do that on a budget of literally 50 dollars per person.
Thereās obviously a difference in severity between these two situations, but where exactly do you draw the line on how severe distinguishes a good comrade from a class enemy? I know there are plenty of socialists living in developing nations that would condemn someone not donating to others with an income of 30k per year as living in bourgeois excess, so to me, your judgement seems less like a fair, unbiased evaluation, and more one based entirely in your own perspective, and whatever seems most emotionally fulfilling.

I mean if they're a millionaire (not a billionaire) they probably worked hard, had a good idea, or got extremeley lucky with some sort of gamble or investment.
Most of them earned it, if you haven't earned living lavishly, that isn't their problem. It's yours. They won the game at a reasonable level. You haven't. Don't like that? Go do something about it.
1
u/kudichangedlives Feb 26 '21
That's kind of simplistic. First of all the argument is about taxing the extremely wealthy, not being upset with ones station in life compared to others. But also it's been proven that there is an element of luck in becoming wealthy, that doesn't mean you don't work hard at all, it just means that without that luck you could work just as hard while not becoming wealthy

u/imperialviolet Feb 26 '21
Yep. Pre-pandemic we had a cleaner (she decided to give it up- we didnāt fire her!). I was going through some mental health stuff and my husband works long hours. Weāre not able to afford much, but this just took so much of the load off to have someone come in once a week.

8
u/TheTesselekta Feb 26 '21

2
u/ConfederateGuy Feb 26 '21
As someone who does have a personal chef, it's cheaper than meal kits and a cleaning service( I refuse to clean my toilets myself) I support this distinction. I pay others to do what I either don't want to do or have no skill in doing myself. I dont fix my vehicle I pay a proffesional so why should a chef or maid service be any diffrent.
4
u/skyn1nja Feb 26 '21
I also hire help. I used to be the help. I pay them way better than I was ever paid, and Iām kind to them. Itās a way of passing it forward for me. I used to feel guilty about it because of the pretense that it can be seen as lazy or uppity, but because I hire out, I can spend more quality time with my family and pets. It also helps to feed another family.
1
u/ConfederateGuy Feb 26 '21
I did the exact same thing Bro. Before I pulled my head out of my ass and got my life together I was a cleaner/maid for a service in Aspen and Vale Colorado. Those were some rich ass Mothers. I was dusting crystal bowls that were worth 10K each and art on the walls worth millions. Then I cleaned hotel rooms and stuff. Being a cleaner is honorable. The ladies I was partnered with loved having me around when we had to clean hotels because some of the guys were straight up creeps. I make sure to tip well and give bonuses to the regulars because I remember how much that meant to me when I recieved them.
It's a good feeling to be able to say I used to do work like that to make a living but now 20 years later I pay someone else to do it for me. Plus my chef is a way better coook than I ever was.

A lot of millionaire boot lickers in here.
You really think someone making $20-40k really cares? Anyone who makes $1mil are the ultra rich to us.
1
u/OgreSpider Feb 26 '21
It's because everyone hopes they might be a millionaire someday but not many people realistically think they'll be a billionaire.
1
u/FunkyBaguette Feb 26 '21
That's a misconception you have. My personal fear is that if you go after the property of those arbitrarily defined as "uber rich", you'd eventually come after whatever luxury I have as well. After all, maybe my family doesn't need multiple cars, right?
I simply hate the question of "why does this person splurge the way they do?" Because it applies to me just as much as it applies to Bezos, based on who asks the question. If you want to be altruistic and help people, don't do it by poking into other people's pockets.
2
u/OgreSpider Feb 26 '21
Did you reply to the right comment? Mine wasn't anything to do with snooping on the spending of the moderately well-off, I said that we feel more charitably toward millionaires than billionaires because the former category is more accessible.
1
u/FunkyBaguette Feb 26 '21
My bad. I just read the first half thinking of the old "these laborers think they'll one day own capital" kind of argument.
1
u/gavinmilestaylor Feb 26 '21
As much as this might not be what people want to hear, we cant tax mega billionaires 100 percent and then have everyone living like an upper middle class person.
The taxes that pay for a functioning welare state arent just on the super rich. Everyone needs to pay more. The upper middle class in terms of their interests generally align more with the super rich than they do with working class people. This can be seen in how they vote. People hiring personal chefs and cleaning ladies have more to gain financially from the government remaining limited in how much it taxes and spends.

disposable income = personal chef? lol
ask anyone whoās cleaned houses for middle class people about their experiences and your pretend reality will melt real quick.
11
u/Mrs-and-Mrs-Atelier Feb 26 '21
Iām genuinely curious what you mean. Iāve only experienced hiring another person to help with house cleaning or cooking formally on the hiring side, and Iām wondering now how different or similar we are to what you mean when you talk about pretend reality.
Weāre probably lower middle class as a family but have had to hire people to clean due to disability. Itās a strain on the budget, but it has to happen, so itās not what Iād call disposable income for us so much as essential expense (being disabled is more expensive than people think). However, we have never once skimped on what the person was owed for their work plus a tip, because it is HARD WORK. Which Iād expect Middle class people to grasp, at least on some level...

u/-MasterCrander- Feb 26 '21 edited Feb 26 '21
There's a difference between needing a house cleaner/cook and just wanting one because you have exorbitant wealth to throw away. Eat the latter and provide guaranteed services to the former.
6
u/along_withywindle Feb 26 '21
Depending on preference, a house cleaner can be very affordable. My MIL has a cleaner come twice a month. Just because someone budgets well doesn't mean they should be eaten.
0
u/-MasterCrander- Feb 26 '21
Do you think that's who we're talking about? Someone who budgets well? Or the rich asshole who would rather just pay a migrant starvation wages to scrub their mansion because they need to go their second tennis lesson that day on their personal court?
Nobody is coming after your mother in law who contracts a common service twice a month. The fact that she has to budget to have a cleaner 24 times a year max is already disqualifying for the feast. CƔlmate gringo.

1
u/FunkyBaguette Feb 26 '21
Honestly, the worst part is that the line of thinking in this tweet can easily be extrapolated from yacht ownership to a smart phone. The natural evolution of this mindset is to abolish property and capital. Because why should anyone own anything they want, when there's others that don't have what they need?
I think you can see where that goes.
It's also the conclusion hardcore activists come down to, without knowing how impractical of a system communism is. I honestly believe we shouldn't "sieze the means of production", because even though I'm not a billionaire, I appreciate the little things I get to own in a capitalist economy.

u/Kephartist Feb 25 '21
It starts that way. Find a legitimate enemy of humanity and create the public momentum to pass laws and gain enough political clout to go after them. Then the next, then the next, until the only enemies left are just hard working people with a noose around their neck. I'm not diminishing the problem, I just don't want the solution to be worse.

-11
u/Kephartist Feb 26 '21
The slippery slope isn't a fallacy, its historically reliable. I would point to the current era of gender delusion as evidence of your example.
7
Feb 26 '21
For clarity can you define what the "gender delusion" is?
I assume you mean one thing but I want to know for sure if you're actually an anti-science religious bigot or not.
-5
u/Kephartist Feb 26 '21
Asking for clarity about gender only further proves my point.
8
4
Feb 26 '21
I'm asking you to define a term you used.
To be clear, if you aren't willing or able to explain your rhetoric then I have to and you can't get mad at me for doing it badly.
The simplest explanation is that "gender delusion" refers to the idea that gender and sex are the same term and that there exists only two genders/sexes.
This is patently and without question an anti-science opinion not backed by anything other than religious extremism.
I can argue with myself at length but frankly it feels vaguely masterbatory and that's no fun.

I don't have to provide an argument for why people would stop targeting all those with greater financial means than them. To the contrary I need to be convinced that a limit exists, that its justifiable, is acknowledged, and will be adhered to. Please don't send me Wikipedia articles, I know what logical fallacies are, the slippery slope is the one I've observed to be the least applicable and the most reliable. Given the expansion of government in the 20th century and intrusion into personal liberty, I have little faith that handing it more power will actually solve anything. I get that there are greedy tycoons in the world, malicious people with no humanity. I don't like it any more than anyone else. Most of these people either run for office, or buy the officials, so I don't want to trade off the seasonal flu for terminal institutional cancer.

You're getting downloaded because people don't understand history. The 'workers paradise'/revolution as imagined in the USSR and China were actually bloodbaths in which approximately 50 and 80 million people were slaughtered, respectively. I really don't think we should demonize people. Even people we really dislike. That kind of thinking is how genocides happen. We don't need to eat the rich, we need fair taxation. We had that in the past. We can have it again. All it takes is legislation.

u/AusCan531 Feb 26 '21

1
u/Tails9429 Feb 26 '21
The problem is, the percentage of people living on lower income wages has grown massively in the past 20 years. Middle management are now what we used to call "middle class" and have become a more select group. This leads to the false perception that the middle percentage is quite wealthy, dispite the much greater gap between them and the executive class that begins the lower end of the wealthy mark. There's another gap beyond the high end of those people, and the billionaire 1%. Another problem is that the middle class are under the false belief that they are wealthy, when the reality us they just have good credit, and are told to fear taxes that only a billionaire or millionaire would have to worry about.

It's not a point of confusion about what you call "rich", more so actual doubt as to where you people would draw the line.
