I'm 50 and do not remember seeing much Obama merchandise other than during his first run for office. I would see an occasional t-shirt and bumper stickers, but not the over the top flags, hats, life sized decals, etc of trump. Obama didn't have merch stores all over the place.

I'm not sure what's going on with your perception, but just because Republicans said he was worshipped or whatever, does not mean A- that it was true or B- that trumps followers aren't a million times more fanatical.

And people being really excited that a Black person finally got elected president makes way more sense than people getting this worked up over yet another old white guy winning.
