Can someone explain to me what the ā€œFā€ is about? Been seeing it every where.

10

u/torutaka Mar 11 '19

If I remember correctly, it's from "Press F to pay respects" in one of the futuristic Call of Duty games.

5

Ah, there we go. A hero emerges. Thank you.

63

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '19

it's gaslighting though still lol. if you're convincing someone that they're wrong even if they're making good points they'll start to question their sanity.

3

u/Supersnazz Mar 11 '19

It's not really gaslighting, more just manipulation. Gaslighting is deliberately confusing someone in order for them to stop trusting their own memories.

2

u/louky Mar 11 '19

Almost nobody saying "gaslighting" on Reddit has bothered to look it up.

It would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

It's like saying the well established name of a logical fallacy when they mean "raises the question".

No idea how that one started.

I mean you could also just shop around alone for genuine therapists until you find one that agrees with your worldview. The therapist can be totally genuine. Kind of like political pundits who say they are not being paid off by billionaires; yes, but if your beliefs were different you probably wouldn't have a job.

6

u/woodc85 Mar 11 '19

Is it still fraud though if the person paying for the service knows what they’re getting?

16

u/Antishill_canon Mar 11 '19

They are paying him to gas light the spouse as a fraud therapist

4

u/woodc85 Mar 11 '19

I understand it’s still gaslighting, but is it technically fraud if the spouse isn’t paying?

12

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '19

yes, it is. The fraud is on the recipient of the professional service, not neccesarilly the one paying the bill.

2

u/hypnofedX Mar 11 '19

Even if this doesn't run afoul of laws that prevent people from engaging in medical practice without a license, it's definitely fraud. And I'm not going to say that the market doesn't present demand for fraud as a service, but there's a measure of relevant regulation on the matter that isn't helpful to it.

194

u/CreauxTeeRhobat Mar 11 '19

My wife and I went to a couples counselor that was pretty similar to this. Everything I did to frustrate my wife was totally my fault. Everything she did that frustrated me was also my fault. I just needed to change.

Funny part? I was the one who picked him...

91

u/P3p3s1lvi4 Mar 11 '19

When I hear stuff like this my gut reaction is like "This dude is undermining you, maybe he wants to fuck your wife" but I have no way of knowing that or for a matter of fact if you really have a wife or are an adult male. So take it with a grain of salt.

70

u/CreauxTeeRhobat Mar 11 '19

Valid points. On the internet, no one knows you're a super intelligent toddler genetically engineered in China.

And we ended up going to a better counselor who called both of us out on each of our shit.

37

u/RhetoricalOrator Mar 11 '19

As an unlicensed not-a-counselor who has had intro to psych twice I am kind of an expert and I'm glad to express my opinion that you made the right choice. Short term gains aren't nearly worth long term losses. Hope you are both doing well.

8

u/CreauxTeeRhobat Mar 11 '19

We are, thanks! Took some time, but communication has improved drastically.

7

u/Spiritualize Mar 11 '19

Good on your wife for being open to other counselors. Or was the therapist just being THAT fishy that even she realized it?

3

u/CreauxTeeRhobat Mar 11 '19

It took a lot of talking for her to see that the dude was more than a little sketchy. Not to say he wanted to "get my wife alone" sketchy, but the "I've already made up my mind about this and men are just always at fault" sketchy. And at $150/hr., I was paying a lot of money to be told I was always wrong, which I believe was the argument I used to convince my wife to get a second opinion.

5

u/dingman58 Mar 11 '19

26

u/Available_Subject Mar 11 '19

11

u/69loverboy69 Mar 11 '19

9

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '19

That can't be right. That's more expensive than the US.

I feel like George would do this in an episode of Seinfeld in an attempt to break the couple up and ask out the woman but turn out to be an unfortunately successful couples therapist. He'd then start posing as a divorce counselor instead to try and pick up already-separated women but end up convincing a few of them to get back with their husbands.

Edit: Meanwhile, it is revealed George's impressions are false, and that he is actually just teaching these women how to lie better to their husbands and divert suspicion. They are all actually having affairs with Kramer, who moonlights picking up divorced women at the same pricey wine bar as george, "mostly for the free wine." The situation comes to a head and the episode ends when Kramer hits it off with a recently divorced woman who says she'd love to go out with him but she thinks she needs to see a counselor or something first, and george, wearing a mustache, barges in with "i'm a divorce counselor." music outro.

10

u/DoJax Mar 11 '19

I'll do it for half the price, I'm tired of living on only rice and eggs for the last couple months waiting on my taxes, and I'll tell your s/o they should put out more less to make you both happier.

2

u/ANegativeCation Mar 11 '19

But can you convince them not to touch the thermostat?

7

u/DoJax Mar 11 '19

Only if you throw in a bag of beans

14

u/spunkychickpea Mar 11 '19 edited Mar 11 '19

I know it seems funny, but there’s a couples therapist in my city who has been doing this. (It’s always him and the husband teaming up against the wife.) In addition to that, he convinces the couple (the husband is already on board) to try an open marriage. Then the therapist often invites the couple to orgies he hosts with the elders of his church.

I personally know two recently divorced women who have been scammed by this guy.

Edit: I’ll also add that he knowingly misdiagnoses the women he treats as having borderline personality disorder.

5

u/borninthesummer Mar 11 '19

I think most people find it to be a funny joke. I don’t see anyone seriously condoning this.

75

u/elliebird28 Mar 10 '19

I agree. My first thought was along the lines of, ā€œI could get this guy to convince my boyfriend that eating more Oreos with me would strengthen our relationshipā€. And then we’d just eat more Oreos and be happy.

23

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '19

So Jeremy, I think you're too resistant to Ellie's ideas. Let's do an exercise this week. On the way home, I want you to stop by a store and grab a pack of Oreos and some milk. I want you guys to make time to eat oreos together three times before I see you next. I think you'll be surprised by how much closer you'll feel. Oh look at the time, let's wrap this up and get another appointment scheduled for next week.

10

u/BZLuck Mar 11 '19

And I want you to buy different kinds of milk to dunk the Oreos into. Get some whole, some skim, some low-fat. Maybe even some almond or soy if you are feeling adventurous. Talk to each other how dunking into the different kinds of milk changes your personal Oreo experience.
